Game 35 Recap: Blazers 109 Warriors 91

In a season where the Blazers are showing us a new way to win almost every night they gave us yet another one this evening.  And wake up Blazer fans...this was a good one.  Our young little Blazers came out, got on top of the Warriors from the very start, and never let them close.  It was never a contest.  It was almost...boring.  We played some fantastic stretches...we were up by 25.  We played some rough stretches...we were up by 20.  This, my friends, is what very good professional teams do.  This is not our regular habit so you can't say we've become a great team yet, but when we do become a great team there are going to be a lot of nights like this.

Boxscore

Team Observations

The most impressive thing was how we attacked the Warriors inside early in the game before we put it in cruise control.  As James Jones said in the post-game interview on TV we perceived a weakness and we exploited it.  The first eight minutes of the game were a dunk-fest.  That got the Warriors back on their heels and they never recovered.

A close second for impressiveness was how we moved the ball.  It barely ever stayed still tonight.  Now the Warriors for some reason came in flat as my granny's nightgown but teams have done that before and we've not taken advantage.  Tonight we did.  You could probably count the bad shots we took on one hand.  How's this for a stat:  we had 32 assists on 40 made buckets.  That's an 80% assist rate.  Wow.

We outrebounded the Warriors by a bunch, which is not necessarily a surprise but is something we purposely focus on, so it's nice to see.  We also beat them at their own game, notching 10 steals to their 7.  We shot 46% to their sub-40% night.  We held them (or they held themselves) to the perimeter all night long.  We beat them there too, canning 13 long balls on 46.4% shooting to their 8 on 27.6% shooting.  And check out these stats:  Baron Davis 4 points in 14 minutes, Stephen Jackson 5 points in 17 minutes, Monta Ellis 10 points in 25 minutes.  In the preview to this game I said it's guaranteed that somebody from the Warriors would go off big time.  Darned if they didn't make a big, fat liar out of me.  Golden State will win zero games when their three scorers combine for less that 20 points.  Normally that's a really good half for Davis alone.  Holding the Warriors to 91 points is a feat worth celebrating.

The Warriors came in with the energy of a slug in an ice tray and we played against their B and C team most of the night, but who cares?   This game still counts towards the standings and if you want to be in the thick of it in the West you have to win games like this.  No mercy, no remorse...just take the "W" and prepare for Toronto on Sunday morning.  That's more than the Warriors will be leaving Portland with, and that's the only thing that matters.

Individual Notes

--Steve Blake apparently borrowed some of Martell Webster's underoos tonight, as he scored 24 points, terrorizing the Warriors with his shooting.  He was 8-10 for the contest, including 5-6 from beyond the arc.   Every once in a while something gets into him.  I wish it never came out.  20+ points on 10 shots every night would be amazing.

--Brandon Roy had a scary night, first with the back and then with a twisted knee right before the half.  When he went to the floor and clutched his knee you could have heard a pin drop in the otherwise-boisterous Garden.  The camera caught Paul Allen looking like he was getting a prostate exam...with a periscope.   Brandon was fine and played in the second half.  It was hardly his best game but we hardly needed it. He ended up with 8, 8, and 8...the dreaded triple snowman.

--If Lamarcus Aldridge had started the game any more off he would have needed jumper cables.  Have you ever gone bowling and you're releasing the ball in the right spot but it's just going wide for some reason?  That looked like Lamarcus tonight.  It was sad because we were obviously trying to feed him inside.  Also had he connected on a reasonable number of shots early we would have been up by triple digits.  Nevertheless he came around somewhat late in the game to finish a respectable 8-15 with 19 points and 5 rebounds.  And that was an off night.

--Other than handling the ball like a junior high kid dancing with his Social Studies teacher at the Winter Formal Martell had a reasonably impressive night.  He shot 6-9, 4-6 from distance, for 16 points.  Again that kind of point production on limited shots is solid gold for this team.  It allows us to control the tempo and still put up a ton of points.

--Joel Pryzbilla got an amazing 10 points and 10 boards in 22 minutes.  His eyes light up when he sees Golden State coming to town.  Andres Biedrins owes Joel big time.  He'd better be all about making Joel his personal lapdog when the Blazers travel to Oakland or he's going to end up seriously in debt for the season.  Honestly Biedrins is a much better player than he appears against us.

--James Jones' good games are so de rigueur that they barely merit mentioning anymore.  Oh...he shot 5-8 and scored 16.  Say, can you pass me the peanuts?

--Travis Outlaw didn't have the best offensive night but he didn't really need to.  He did get 8 rebounds and 3 steals in his 22 minutes.  And he didn't shoot every time he touched the ball.  Super Trout would have been overkill tonight anyway.  It was a nice night for the kid.

--Channing Frye grabbed 7 rebounds in 20 minutes on a night where he couldn't put the ball in the ocean with a Howitzer.  That's what we need.  If you're not hitting, do something else.

--Jarrett Jack had an amazing 6 turnovers in one of his worst outings of the season.  If he follows form we should be seeing an upswing from him soon.

--Sergio had 4 nice assists and 2 rebounds in 13 minutes.  He also hit a three so the fans could "Ole". Update: And isn't it nice to hear "Ole" when he scores instead of when he's defending? --Dave

--Taurean Green got 6 minutes of play and missed 4 shots.  That means he came in with six minutes left in the game though!  Blowout substitutions are fun no matter what.

How do you write these so fast?
What a great and fun game, the only thing that could make it better would be to take out that scary injury drama.

at the summer league
Dave was typing thoughts and comments during the games.

Is he doing that during these games too?

No indeed
I would have to be quadridextrous (or something) to do that and chat in the Gameday Thread and watch the game.  It's all done afterwards.

Only game on this trip...
...that I would classify as "unwinnable" is Boston on Wednesday.

But who knows? This team has been on such a tear, we might have a shot at that one, too.

Boston lost at home to Charlotte tonight
no game is unwinnable.

2 wins on the trip would be decent.
3 wins on the trip would be solid.
4 would be excellent.
5 would be phenomenal.
I'm not even going to say what 6 or 7 would be.

by jksnake99 on Jan 9, 2008 10:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That's exactly how I see it
We're in a no-lose, no-pressure situation on this trip. The bottom completely falling out would be the only real disaster...and even then we'd still be above .500.  Going into a 7-game trip saying, "We'll be fine if we can win two" is a great position to be in.  It's absolutely to our credit that we've put ourselves in this position too.  We have won all of these games and this is our benefit:  a cushion through the trouble spots.

I'm thinking that's not the mind set
of a lot of the players.

My guess is they are going into this trip thinking they are going to win every game.

who knows
I would have been with you at the start of the year, but these are the hot hot Blazers and who knows how long Ray Allen is going to be out.

I imagine none of the Blazers are looking at that game as un-winnable.

It feels so good to be an irrational fan again. I would be really happy if they could get 4 games on this road trip, but I believe they will get all of them.

Doc Rivers
said Ray is fine and would have played tonight if it were a playoff game.

No individual game
looks unwinnable outside of Boston. However, the fact that we play 5 GAMES IN 7 DAYS ON THE ROAD is absurd! Whoever wrote that into the schedule should have to play Brandon in a game of 1 on 1 for his job.

by einman77 on Jan 10, 2008 12:15 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Tough schedules
are a higher premium penalty to older teams with players who cannot recover as fast and to shallow teams who play their stars 40 minutes a game. As neither applies to us we should be loving the action.

And s I think about it we have a decided advantage on nearly every team in the league with true quality and production in our White unit. Once the stars begin to be paid like stars the bench quality suffers except for true championship contenders who can sign declining stars to be role players. So Boston should be afraid because those games ahead of them are going to get us nicely warmed up!

Ellis foul on Blake
I heard people booing Ellis after knocking Blake out of the game? Was it intentional-looking or dirty at all? Dave or anyone who watched it know?

by SandbergOnSports on Jan 9, 2008 10:22 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Not dirty at all
I think a lot of fans were booing because no foul was called.  Some may have thought it was intentional, but I didn't see anything to suggest that.  Ellis was running to close out on Martell, and he nailed Blake on accident, and both fell to the floor.

by il serpente on Jan 9, 2008 10:31 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know how ...
you can bury your knee in the back of someone's calf without it being intentional on some level. Stevie was kind of just standing there ... didn't back into the oncoming Ellis at all. However, I could not see if Ellis stumbled at all as he was coming over. It sure looked intentional to me, though ... Wonder if he'll get a game from the league on that one?

by bfan on Jan 9, 2008 10:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If that was intentional, I'm impressed
Try running full speed down a basketball court and planting your knee into someone's calf.  You'd be more likely to hurt yourself than them.  Plus, I haven't heard anything negative about Ellis before.  You look at it in slow motion, and it looks like it could be on purpose.  But at regular speed, it just looks like a freak accident.

The bad news--that type of deep bruise can take awhile to heal.

I agree
How could someone plan on running full speed into someone and jam their knee into them?  No way he pulls it off without falling down too and causing an injury if it was intentional.  And he fell down too.  If it was intentional, he would have just tripped him with his foot.

No intent
It was too late then anyway.  Blake had scored 24.  It was just a collision.

--Dave

by Dave on Jan 9, 2008 11:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

From cable watching...
I thought it looked like they were both running down the court, Blake in front and slightly to the right of Ellis. When Blake pulled up short and slightly to the left to fire off an assist (to Jarrett Jack and his shot did not go in???  I'm fuzzy on this part,)Ellis collided with him.  The fall looked dicey too like he was off kilter as he went down.  There was enough force to just knock his legs out from under him.

White Unit lacked enegry
Am I the only one who thinks that when Sergio, Jack, and Outlaw came in that our offense really bogged down? That was the group that allowed our lead to drop to 7 in the second quarter, with a bunch of sloppy play resulting in turovers. Sure, Jones ended with 16 points, but other than that the White unit seemed to lack energy. We had to play our starters a lot tonight to keep our lead.

from a radio listener
I thought that same thing happened and a friend and I were wondering why Blake came out.

I think it is due to Nate being set on a rotation and substitution pattern. I think there a lot of good arguments for implementing this and hopefully it will makes us a better team overall with these well defined roles, even if it hurts us in the short term.

Oh well. What a Win!

According to Dave's recap, this game was never in doubt.

Golden State
went into a zone and threw off our normal pick and roll defense.  our guards couldn't find martell or Jones so it was a tough stretch.  and Martell made some horrible passes and pretty much no one wanted to blow our great lead so they got complacent

by BlazerBandit on Jan 9, 2008 11:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you
The white unit contributed little in the first half and really only in the 4th quarter put up some numbers. The intensity was not there for most of those guys tonight. They looked like they were playing, in Dave's words: on cruise control.

Of course comparing the White unit to the Warriors bench was pretty abysmal tonight. That is one set of stats I like to look at first but tonight Nelly made the right choice and left them in because they were better than ours.

by lee3022 on Jan 9, 2008 11:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It looked to me
like they got overconfident, and thought anything they did would turn to gold.  This resulted in a lot of bad passes and stabs at spectacular, but unsound, plays.  That, and Jack was horrible taking care of the ball.  If I remember correctly, the lead crept back up when Sergio maintained the ball-handling duties (the only turnover I remember him having was the ball coming loose because of a lot of contact).

Impressive
Not only the win, but the fact that you, Dave, had this review up within an hour of the game's final buzzer.

Being fortunate enough to witness this game, in-person in Sec. 225, I have to say that it was probably the most complete and yes, incredible, Trailblazers game that I've ever witnessed live. Granted, I don't have that long of live performances to compare it to (I'm only 27 and living in Portland for three years); but regardless it was amazing.

This folks are our Blazers and to take exception to an otherwise great posting by Dave, but I think that these are the type of performances that we can start expecting from our Blazers right now--not in the future.

Granted they won't come every night, of course, but the past month and a half has shown us that these Blazers truly understand, and embrace, the concept of team ball and that is putting the rest of the league, and the West!, to shame.

Regardless, incredible night. Great Win. RIP CITY, BABY!!

P.S. Dave: I spotted a few BlazerEdge shirts in the crowd tonight and was envious of the wearers since I won one in November and have yet to receive it ;)

But have no fear as I was still rocking an adidas Blazers hoody.

(blazersub@yahoo.com)

Here are the two styles I have left:

I'm pretty sure I'm down to Larges and Extra-Larges in each, though I'm not entirely positive.  Cost is $15.00 per shirt and that includes shipping in the U.S.  I'm not making a dime off of them...just a way to show your love for the site.  Everyone went ga-ga over the Oden shirt but I actually LOVE the second one and wear it often.

I can take check, money order, or paypal.  E-mail me for details.

That was indeed a scary moment...
...when Roy went down.  Having torn an ACL on a basketball court myself, it hits me when any player grabs for his knee like that.  It's such a helpless, frightening feeling when you think you've just wrecked your knee.  Watching the leader of this amazing young team experience that was REALLY tough to take.  To tell the truth, I never quite got back in the spirit of things afterwards.

But all's well that ends well; Roy is OK and it was a great win.  Blake might miss a game or two, but that's everyday life in the NBA.

Roy said on the radio afterwards
that his leg went numb and that scared him. This is the knee that he had surgery on in college and it is not as flexible. He said as he was walking through the tunnel to the locker room the feeling began coming back and that relieved him.

Just my grumbling
but the Warriors got 14 offensive rebounds to our 12. Of course they had many more chances.....

by lee3022 on Jan 9, 2008 11:46 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yes
And that's always going to be a facet of our play this year.  It kills us when it's constant, like a slow leak all game long.  Sometimes it's a torrent all game long!  Then there are games like tonight where we have isolated pockets of giving up bunches--3 or 4 at a time--but then manage to shut it off.  That doesn't hurt us as badly.

--Dave

by Dave on Jan 9, 2008 11:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Deceptive statistic
When the opposing team is bombing away from outside and missing like GS was doing last night, there will be more opportunity for them to have offensive rebounds off the long bounce.  When we're bombing away from the outside and making them (Blake, Jones, Web), there isn't as much opportunity.

I've been half afraid to post since I've gotten my new internet connection seeing as how the Blazers started winning almost exactly when I went away.

Since I posted yesterday and they still went on to win decisively, does that mean I can breath easy and bring it on?

Brandon Roy is heartless
He should know better than to play with my emotions like that.  His KNEE knows better as well, so I don't know who I'm angrier with.  I'm folding my arms and furrowing my brow at both of them, just to cover all my bases!

I love a blowout, I love dunks, I love how this team plays.  9 freaking games over .500..... really makes me wish I bet the over on the Vegas prediction for 29 wins this season (I didn't bet the under of course, I just didn't bet.  Man oh man I knew it woulda' been easy breezy beautiful cover girl money...)

I hope we face the same implosive Dubs bunch when we play in Oaktown.  And Brandon Wright is skinnier and goofier than I remembered, but I think he should be decent.  He's a lefty and that helps!  Nelly hates rookies though, so it'll be hard for him to get playing time.

Always a great recap,

Can't argue with last night
He looked completely out of it.

It is his first game in quite a while where he has looked that bad.  He hasn't been scoring a lot lately but he has been taking care of the ball and he just came off a solid performance against the Jazz where he played 39 minutes in Roy's absence.

He also has hit some big shots during the streak even in games where he doesn't get many shots or opporunities he hits a big one or makes plays that help win games.

Coach has stayed steady
with his game plan and his rotation. Every player has a bad game at times. Jack will rebound. He is a leader and wants to do well, maybe more than you want to get rid of him (smile).

Another good all-around team effort. ho-hum.
It's pretty sweet to watch each player come in and chip in a little bit to each game.  This group doesn't blow up a box score, but usually each and every little contribution is key.  I keep wondering if their goal is to get eight or nine players each game with around 15 points, 5 rebounds, and/or 5 assists.  They usually aren't far off.

B Roy, LMA, Sergio, James Jones, Outlaw, Prz, Frye, Martell, and Blake all made pretty significant contributions to last night's win.  That's NINE guys.  JJ had a bad game, but he'll bounce back.

by leeroyjenkins on Jan 10, 2008 9:20 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Fun game to be at, but injuries looked bad
What has made Portland a good team this year is their ability to throw 10 quality guys at every team.  Jones said it after the game - the way that this team plays with 10 guys and most play with 8.  He said that when somebody goes down, there is someone there ready to step it up because they have all gotten quality minutes this year and have that true game experience.  It was a very interesting point.

Now, when I saw Roy and Blake rolling over in pain, I saw and felt how fragile all of this is.  We can't expect to compete if we lose two guys for extended periods, and we all know how inportant Roy is to the success of this team.  BUT, the injury to Roy's BUTT has shown Brandon that this team can still be successful if his tush hurts too much for him to be explosive to the basket.  We need his presence, but we do not always need his scoring.  Blake has proven how important he is as well on the offensive and defensive end.  He is very steady.  He can't chase people around like Jack can, but he is far more calming on the offensive end than Jack is.  We need his presence as well.  I hope and pray that they both can continue, because our depth only goes so far.

Anyway, the road trip will be interesting.  Just the fact that we are talking about the fact that the Blazers have a chance to win most if not all of these games is incredible.  If the Blazers finish this month still atop the Division, then they will have proved to the nation that they are a playoff team and even Charles Barkley will have to admit it.  Let's all hope and pray for Brandon's tush, his knees, his heel, and every other part of his body.  Let's also hope and pray that Steve can shake off what was clearly a painful and unfortunate collision.  We need both of them on the court.

Hmm...too many point guards?
This game bounces us back to the summer when some believed we had too many point guards. With two going down in one game it looks a little different. Green is apparently here for insurance.

Blake's contusion is no small injury. While there should be complete recovery the nature of the injury and its location suggest missing at least a few games. (No I am not a Doctor but I did drive by a Holiday Inn Express once.)
