An Open Letter to Greg Oden

Amongst all the coverage of Greg Oden's surgery yesterday the piece you couldn't miss was the human one.  Not the medical coverage, not the basketball analysis, but Kevin Pritchard saying that both Greg and his mom were apologizing while being rolled out of the operating room.  Without seeming too presumptuous, I want to tell our newest center something on behalf of all Blazer fans (I hope anyway)...

Greg, you have nothing to apologize for.  Of course everybody was disappointed over the results from yesterday.  How could you not be?  But everyone was disappointed for you, not about you.  We want to see you play.  We look forward to the day when you put on that uniform and take the court to a thunderous standing ovation.  We're eager to watch you mold the game around you as you've shown you can do.  We're going to have to wait another year to do that.  But it's not the end of the world...for you, for us, for anybody.

In the coming year I suspect you're going to learn something about what it means to be a Trailblazer.  That rally at the downtown square after you were drafted?  It was only the tip of the iceberg.  For every one of the thousands of people that came that day there were a hundred more who couldn't come but felt the same way.  Nobody's going to stop thinking about you.  Nobody's going to stop cheering you.  Nobody's going to stop believing in you.  Every person you meet in the coming year is going to smile and shake your hand and wish you well and a speedy recovery.  You're going to be as welcomed and accepted for riding a stationary bike and doing rehab exercises as you would be if you were notching 20 and 20 every night.  That's what it means to be part of the Blazers.  We don't leave our own.  We don't give up on our own.  Even if you never played another minute in your life you would still be a Blazer--one of us--and we would still love you for it.  This ain't L.A. or New York where you perform or get forgotten.   This is Portland, baby, and Portland never forgets its own.

When you put on that uniform on draft night you became part of something that's bigger than all of us... something that stretches back to our childhoods and before, something that will continue long after we're all gone.  Wins and stats and trophies are part of it, but those aren't the real reason to be a Blazer.  The real reason to belong to the Blazers is that you have a chance to change the lives and inspire the dreams of so many people in a way they never forget.

I hope you understand that you've already done that.  The moment that ball bounced in the hopper and we knew that it was you we'd be getting this town caught on fire.  Even coming as far as you have you've made a big difference.  You change the world by smiling at our children, being gracious when you speak to us, and reminding us that it's OK to love a bunch of guys running up and down the court dribbling an orange ball--that if we trust and admire and dream about them like we did when we were kids they won't disappoint us or quit on us.  You'll teach us that lesson again in the coming year, maybe even better than you could if you were playing.  A recovering knee can't take that away.  Nothing ever will. It's just another opportunity for all of us to show what we're about.

I know it must feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.  I know at times in the next year it'll seem like that weight is landing squarely on your knee.  But somehow that weight is easier to bear when you have a few hundred thousand friends to share it with.  And you do.  Think of us when you're burning through that thirtieth rep.  Think of us when you're watching your teammates playing.  We'll be thinking of you, supporting you, praying for you, and cheering you.  This isn't going to break our relationship.  It's going to make us stronger.

You are the man.  You are our man.  Go get 'em, baby.

--Dave and the Blazer Fans

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to add a couple things for the rest of us:

  1.  This is terminally dorky, but I run almost every day of the week.  It gets harder as I get older and busier and I feel like I am already pushing my body to the limit.  But I am hereby pledging that I am adding two minutes to the end of each run.  I am calling those my "Greg Oden" minutes.  If he has to suffer through a grueling rehab the least we can do is send some energy and empathy his way.  I invite all you exercisers to push out one more rep, one more lap, or whatever you do in the coming year and consciously direct and dedicate that to the Big Guy.  The whole city might as well get on board this rehab train.  I'm beginning today.
  2.  It kind of got lost in the news yesterday, but we're trying to send as many kids to the Blazersedge Night at the Garden (Nov. 9th against the Grizzlies) as we can.  One of our readers works with kids who otherwise would never get to attend a game.  The response has been solid so far but I want to make sure everybody has heard.  If you can sponsor a ticket at $31 (or a portion thereof) e-mail me at the address below.  If you're feeling bummed about the news this is one way you're guaranteed to feel better.  Let me know.
--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)

P.S. If enough people send me pictures of themselves doing their "Greg Oden minutes" I'll post them somewhere.

Great post
Dave--

Is there someway we could all "sign" that open letter and that you could get it to G.O.?  Maybe you could send it to him at his blog--I dunno.  As I mentioned somewhere else at this site today, I've suffered thru multiple knee surgeries, and that was always a lonely, painful experience.  I can't imagine what it would be like to have that unhappiness compounded by the weight of an entire city's disappointment.  G.O. is clearly a sensitive guy, and I'm sure it would help him to learn that Blazer fans--all the real ones, at least--are behind him 100%.

Thanks
Thanks for your comment RobbieP, you're a class act. We need more fans like you.

I hadn't even thought about how grueling rehab is. I'm bad at these kinds of promises, but I will try to do the GO minutes. It kind of makes me feel bad that I took Randolph's recover from knee surgery for granted. He worked his butt off.

Imagine this moment: The day Oden finally suits up as a Trail Blazer at the Rose Garden, the crowd noise swells, it turns into the absolute loudest cheer you've ever heard in your life. You get a lump in your throat, tears begin forming. The energy is electric. That's going to be a special moment. Look forward to that moment whenever you feel down.

Amen
Dave said it better than I ever could. @GO:This isn't your fault, and it isn't the end of the world. These things happen. This was gonna be another rebuilding year anyway, what's most important is that you don't get down on yourself, and be as diligent as you can about that rehab so you can get yourself healthy and come back at full strength in 08 and 09.

Gonna be pounding out 12 reps instead of 10 in the weight room all year

To clarify, by go get em, I think Dave meant sit at home for 8 weeks and dont do anything. Just kidding.  Take all the time that is needed to get healthy, there is no reason to rush back.

Keep your head up Greg
I hope that this time can become a stepping stone instead of a stumbling block. I hope that you can enjoy a break away from basketball and all the pressure that's been on you since high school. I hope that you are able to keep your spirits high, knowing that you are part of something that is important to a lot of people. Yeah, you're injured, but you'll be back and this will be just a memory.
There is going to be a lot of "talk" from people who don't know comparing you to Bowie and Walton.
During the Orlando pre-draft camp you said something along the lines of "if you dunk on me, I'm going to hurt you." I hope that you view those comments as a cheap dunk and that you'll use it as fuel to propell you to great things.
For every naysayer, there are 10 fans who stand behind you. Good luck Greg.~Nathan

Excuse Me?
This ain't L.A. or New York where you perform or get forgotten.

New York City has the longest and proudest sports tradition in the country.  You think their teams' fans "forget their own"?  When was the last time you talked to a Giants or Jets fan, a Yankees or Mets fan, about their teams histories?  When was the last time you talked to a Knicks fan for that matter?  New York's teams reek of history -- names and faces both famous and trivial -- and that history is kept alive by the fans.

Say whatever you want about L.A., but don't you dare lump New York in with them as a place where people don't care about their teams and the players on them.

by Toast on Sep 14, 2007 4:43 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the difference is...
You're talking about die hard fans.  In portland, even casual fans know the blazers and the history because almost all of portland (besides from all the new kids) IS a fan.

If you've been here through the successful times, you couldn't go anywhere without blazer signs and love being shown.  You could strike up a conversation with ANYONE about the blazers.

I imagine the fanatics in NY are many and the history is deep, but I do think there's a difference.

I can understand being insulted with the LA lumping though.  NY is definitely NOT like the fair weather fans of LA, but NY HAS been critical and tough on players that disappoint.

True
NY is definitely NOT like the fair weather fans of LA

NY is dissimilar from LA in more ways than I can count.  I think the only things they have in common are size and national notoriety.

but NY HAS been critical and tough on players that disappoint.

Yeah, that's a northeast thing really.  We're brutal.  But you can't say we don't care. ;-)

I can't imagine what you have had to endure over the last few months.  You'll handled it all with a humility and grace rarely seen in people twice your age.

Have a great year getting to know your team and its supporters. You probably don't know it yet, but you've landed in the right place. I look forward to seeing hit the court next year.

Hey Oden
Greg,

Thank you for your apology, but none is needed.  It's out of your control.

Please work hard on rehab and stay involved with the team as much as possible so that you can learn and reduce that learning curve next year.

Please know that you ARE a blazer now and we're cheering for you.

Thank you for being an upstanding citizen and caring about us and the fact you can't play right now.

We care about you and share the disappointment that you must be feeling because I'm sure YOU really wanted to play and we're sad YOU won't have that chance.

There's always next year.  Take advantage of this time off.  Find ways to mix up your game and learn.  We'll be cheering you next year Oden and we'll be cheering you for many years to come.

thanks for being a blazer.  You're one of ours now.

Dear Sir Greg Oden,
I will work 20 minutes more, play 20 more minutes of basketball, run 20 minutes more, pump iron 20 minutes more, sleep 20 minutes more, eat 20 more calories, bike 20 more miles, read 20 minutes more of blazersedge.com, and above all, think 20 more minutes about you, Sir Greg Oden.
The road to recovery will be easier if you will let us run with you. Let us cherish the moment when you step on the court, let it be in march '08, or in next season, it will bring tears in us that we have been there for you. Go get them, Sir Greg Oden.

Thoughtfully yours,
-Nate

Greg, Dave said it perfectly.
This is not your fault, you will recover to your former self, just remember that.  We Portland fans have been waiting a long time, I for one am fine with waiting another year.  I'll still have my season tickets, I'm very, very glad we drafted you, and this injury won't change my mind one bit.  Don't get down on yourself, think positive thoughts, and you'll be tearing down rims in no time at all, and I'll be smiling from my seat.

Oh, and Greg
when you do come back, whaddaya say we take all the negativity that folks at ESPN and elsewhere are spewing and make them eat their words, one at a time.  I'm starting to get a bit of a chip on my shoulder about the way they are treating you in the press -- it will be a pleasure and a privilege to watch you show them the errors of their ways.   Take your time, get well, and be yourself, and this will all work itself out on the basketball court.

hear hear
well said. The same sports media that hyped you up can't wait to tear you down. As soon as you're healthy and show them what you can really do, they'll turn around and praise you like you never left. Don't let the press get to you, big guy.

As a sidenote, I did appreciate the well-rounded article written by Kiki for ESPN. He brings up the key point amidst all the "omg Bowie 2.0!" and "durant/jordan lol" blather that before Bowie went down, he, and the Blazers, were really really good. It provides nice historical perspective, and really makes the Simmons column look like, to quote the Bard, a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Oden workouts
I added two more pullups to my sets last night (hey, that's a big deal for me)--it hurt, but from what Zach said in the Oregonian, it can't hurt as much as recovery from microfrac surgery. I plan on adding another mile to my run today, too. The hard thing for me, knowing my own habits, is going to be sticking to this all year--but again, it can't be as hard as a PT sports rehab program.

I have to admit that it is pretty dorky, but in a year, I'll be stronger for it. I hope that Oden comes through all the stronger for his struggles as well. We're all here with you, man.

Knee surgery isn't that bad, especially
when you're young.  I was a professional 'athlete' by age 17.  I had my ACL replaced and some meniscus repaired during one of those "exploratory surgeries."  The doc said I'd be out for a year or more, and that was it for me as far as performance went.  Within 3 months I was training again.  I didn't win my first international comp for a couple more years, but that was my fault, not my knee's.

I'm 29 now, and walk like I'm 80.  I pounded my knees through my tibia's.  My back never stops hurting, every joint in my body cracks and snaps when I move.  I wake up stiff every morning and ask myself if it was worth.  It was.  I knew I wouldn't live forever.  I knew I'd push myself until I couldn't go any further.  That was the fun in it.

There's no tragedy in getting hurt.  There's tragedy in not trying, in letting things slide, in not pushing harder and further, in being scared, in regretting.  Getting hurt will happen.  It's inevitable.  Be happy you got hurt doing something you love, look at it as a sign of accomplishment, devotion and tenacity, of sign of qualities possessed by a champion.  Losers don't get hurt; they don't try hard enough.  When you're done with your career, you'll feel the pain in the knee, the pain in the back, in the joints and in the kneck, and it's gonna make you smile.  Those pains become your friends, and you'll associate them with the most perfect accomplishment of your life: that accomplishment will be going as far as your body will let you, never relenting.  Eliot said it best"

Though much is taken, much abides
and though we are not now that strength
which in old days moved earth and heaven
That which we are, we are
One equal temper of heroic hearts
made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find and not to yield.

That's it.  That's all that's going to matter to a champ.

I'm not worried about you in the least.  You'll be much the better person for this, stronger, more tenacious, hungrier, and tougher.

Blessed are the flexible, for they never get bent out of shape.

We all love you man. No matter how this surgery turns out (And it will turn out very well indeed, look at Amare dominating the NBA post surgery) we will support you. We are all gonna be there with you roaring in approval when they first call your name. You have plenty of time to reflect, get stronger, learn the NBA game and become hungrier then ever. We all know you will put the hard effort into your comeback.

Even Jordan had an injury problem near the begining of his career and some doubted him. Keep that in mind when the doubters, with fangs bared, take their cheap shots. The same kind of guys doubted #23 when he was young. Remember, some say it was Jordan's injured season that caused Jordan to want to prove the doubters wrong and gave him the unrivaled focus that he gained.

Just take care of yourself big guy and don't rush back. In taking care of yourself you can be proactive. Start eating delicious NW Salmon and organic food. Just because it's good for you doesn't mean it can't taste amazing. I'm not a millionaire's chef and I whip up all sorts of amazing food that goes down like bliss wrapped in yumminess.

Since you are in Portland you have some unique advantages over other cities. We have some of the most eminent alternative medicine in the country. There are phenomenal Yoga teachers here that can speed up your comeback and make you better then ever before while reducing the likelihood of a repeat injury. There are also naturopaths who can prescribe medicine that will help your knee heal better then ever. There are acupuncturists and Reiki Masters who can accelerate your healing and lessen your pain without drugs.

All in all I think this will be a blessing in disguise. Hard to see through the pain you're feeling right now, but I know it my heart it is true. Without my back injury I would have never been put on the path I am now in life and I couldn't be happier. Although no one could have convinced me of it while I was laid out my injury was key to making me the man I am now. Just trust that the Universe has a plan and you are a BIG part of it especially in this little corner of that vast tapestry of reality. This couldn't have happened to you on a better team with more supportive fans and don't forget that. We love you big guy!

Sabonis mentoring Oden!
Wow, Dan at Mike Barret's blog said the most productive thing I've heard since the news was announced. Can you imagine what a wonderful mentorship that would be?! Sabonis mentoring Oden! KP! Get Sabas on the line! Sabonis, one of the all time favorite Blazer players, teaching Oden how to get it done while keeping the knees operable and working. I think it's a great idea. Sometimes I still see his (Sabonis) beautiful passes in my sleep.

For some reason I haven't figured out the hoops to be able to post on MB's blog but, Dan, if you're reading this, I hope your idea takes root.

I feel sorry for him and his mother.
That particular procedure hurts like a motherforker, too. I hope he can find some way to spend 6 months not moving without wanting to blow his brains out in the meantime. I really hope the Blazer's organization sends someone out to look out for his mental health. Being an active person and being laid up suddenly like that is incredibly depressing.

#52 is STILL #1
Greg I wanted you to know that I BOUGHT my season tickets TODAY.  I'm worried that if I don't get them now, that next year and the year after that will sell out so fast that if I don't get my name on their list I won't be able to get a ticket.

Besides, I've been a Blazer fan since the beginning.  I'm sure you've heard a lot of stories, but the bottom line here is that this is not about WHAT YOU ARE AS A PLAYER, IT IS ABOUT WHO YOU ARE AS A PERSON.  You, Brandon and the other fine young men on OUR team are people I want to root for.  For a long time it has been hard to support this team because there were so many people on the team I didn't respect as human beings.  You haven't had the chance yet to really show us the player you are, but you have certainly showed us Blazer fans what kind of PERSON you are.        You are STILL OUR NUMBER ONE PICK.  Get healthy, come to the games when you can, (or we will miss you...you are still a part of the team and the community)  and get ready to enjoy a great career and a wonderful life in your new hometown....THE CITY OF ROSES.

Don't Sweat it Greg
As you can see from this small sampling of Blazers' Fans, you are already loved.  Don't worry about disappointing us by being hurt.  The only way you could ever disappoint all of these faithful is if you spurned us and signed with, dare i say it, the Flakers....Just please don't EVER do that!  Keep your chin up, follow doctor's orders and do what you need to get back ON YOUR TIME.  The team can, and will, wait for you to get back to your top physical condition.  When that time comes, we'll put the rest of the NBA on notice.

on a side note, i take exception to one thing Dave said.  he signed "-Dave and the Blazer Fans", but he meant "The Blazers Fans and Dave."

Dave, pull some strings on a few of your plethera of connections and make sure the big guy himself gets a chance to read this post! Since he'll be immobile for a while, maybe you could even talk him into being a guest blogger!

Dude, Your loved no matter...
GO,
Obviously, everyone here loves you and I think that feeling runs through most of the city. By your words and actions you have become part of Portland and no matter what happens with the knee, you always will be. Deep down I am sure you know that basketball is something you love and will pay you well but in the end it's just a game.

Take care of yourself mentally as well as physically. Enjoy some of what this beautiful city and surroundings have to offer. Get healthy for you, not for us. We love you dude, no matter if you ever play again. Welcome to Portland!

Don't be Sorry, Mr. Greg Oden
Injuries happen.  We know you'll come back strong, and ready to play.  Greg Oden, Center for the Portland Trailblazers, will still be the best player he can be.

I know a year sounds like a long time, and the timing probably makes it worse... the nervous excitement of waiting for your first season to start and all.  But the time will fly by.  It really will.  And honestly, this happening well before the season starts just makes your rehab and comeback all the better; you'll be primed and ready to go at just the right time, before next season.  Ya didn't lose your rookie year, because your rookie year hasn't started yet.  Nothing lost.  You have a LONG career ahead of you, and will be playing basketball for years to come.  Just do what the team and the docs say, and you'll be completely fine.

The fans in Portland believe in you.  No one is angry, just excited to get to see you play.  I'd rather wait a year to see Greg Oden on my beloved Trailblazers, than to have you play hurt or not to have ya at all.

Soon, you'll be up and moving around.  Before you know it, the playoffs have ended and the offseason begins.  The months will fly by, no matter how much it seems like it won't right now.  You'll be back dominating the court, same as ya ever were.

The fans of Portland know you'll do your best, and can't wait to see you play.  Working hard takes care of everything else.

Don't worry about us (not too much anyway)
It's going to be very tough sitting out and not getting to play for the first time in years.  So keep positive and do what you can to make it a good year in as many ways as possible.

As for us, Portland was already getting back into this team and I, for one, was excited about the year before we became insanely lucky.  And I still wouldn't change our pick.

Agreed
One of my good friends, a huge Hawks fan, wrote me this after he found out about the injury: "I'm so sorry to hear about Greg Oden. I am sure you are extremely disappointed right now."

I appreciated his sympathy, and could actually feel his empathy, BUT...

After working through at least four stages of grief last night, the disappointment melted into excitement for the season, and for how Greg will recover and show believers and doubters alike even more about his character and ability. So, while the disappointment for Greg is still there, the hopes that go with him getting a year to live and breathe Blazer basketball while watching his teammates grow together have me even more excited than I was before the injury.

If Greg actually reads this, here it is: Thanks for caring about me, about us, and about our team - yours and mine.

No worries, Greg.
And no apologies necessary.  You'll be back on the court and we'll be there.  When you're ready and healthy and, please, not before.

Be well.

We'll always love you, Greg.
Just get better and take your time.  If anything your injury has made several thousand fans finally get fed up with getting kicked on by the media and other teams fans.

While you fight to get back on the court, we'll be backing you up against the naysayers.  No worries.

hey big guy
first reaction was shock, then dismay. "no way," I said. then I realized Oregonlive wouldn't be kidding about this sort of thing. Then came the taunting phone calls from a friend, bragging about his Andrea Bargnani not having knee problems.

pffbt. I don't care. after pouring out my guts and feelings and thinking about this a lot - then seeing this post - it's time to get steel in your eyes and cut some fools down. it's time to work harder, longer, and prepare more than everyone else. it's time to show that a year off proved worth while.

it's time to make me regret going overseas for your rookie season, following the NBA through only the Internet in a weird time zone.

because god help me if I'm in Japan when you return, I'll buy the online League Pass and stay up to watch your first game, and hope it's the first of many.

I bought your jersey earlier this summer, G.O. I still plan on wearing it, proudly, possibly even while balling myself. I figure wearing that will act as a reminder to drive that little bit harder, go up for the boards with a bit more explosiveness, and play with a little more heart. It certainly can't hurt.

So this is for you, Greg. the inspiration to make that last push when my energy's almost gone. the reason you'll make me regret ever leaving Portland, especially for such a weird time zone change. And a reason for you to wear that smile more often.

Oden's apology
You know that shows you what a guy Oden is. I didn't cry but it's definitley a cry worthy story. It's almost as if it's not even about basketball anymore, I just want Greg to cheer up and to lift his spirits.

I swear to god I'm going to use this as motivation to do something positive. Something. I promise.

Dear Greg Oden:
You can't possibly know this but you have made all of smile more in the last few months than we have in the last few years. It's not that we have been an unhappy bunch, it's just the gift you gave us man, the unexpected gift. And knowing our town, we all feel like just wanting to give something back as best we can.

But mostly we are thankful that you are here, in OUR town going through this. Not some cold hearted place. All of us relish the thought of being part of your destiny, your future, really no matter what may come. I think I speak for most of us that if we were told that we had to wait a year to see you on the court wearing our read and black, no problem. Special young men like you don't just fall of the truck everyday.

I know you like funny movies. Over the next 2 months you will have plenty of time on your hands. May I, for a few laughs suggest you watch some Larry, Curly and Moe? First ballot, unanimous choice hall of fame goofs they are! I have several "best of" CD's, more than glad to let you borrow them for a few weeks.

Hi all at Blazer's Edge
I am a Bulls fan but was so sad to hear about the news of Greg Oden. I have been following him since he was in high school and I was so excited for him to get in the NBA. I was already planning to travel up to Orlando (since I live in Florida) to see him play, and I already ordered my Greg Oden shirt and was wearing it while working out for football this year. I hope that Oden returns after this injury stronger than before and helps the Trailblazers.

As with your "Oden minutes" before I even heard about them I was going to do my high school football season for him, since I wear his number 52 (which when I found that out made me the happiest person on earth). I hope he recovers well and helps your team.

Hi everyone of portland Blazer fans
I live in Seattle and I would like to send a Get Well Greeting. To Greg from one Blazer fan for life. PLEASE GREG TAKE YOUR TIME IN COMING BACK:!!!!! work on your upper body while your waiting for the doctor to clear you to run.

Greg
The minute we called your name and you put on that jersey, you were a Blazer for life.  You will always have the support of the fans, so rest easy.

The advances in the science and knowledge of your type of surgery are huge plusses.  Look at everyone who didn't make it: they had problems with coming back too quick, or weren't up to the task of completing the grueling rehab.  Microfracture is not a dirty word anymore.  I'm not a doctor (I don't even play one on TV), but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that microfracture surgery is the new Tommy John surgery.  That sound when the word escapes peoples lips?  That's the sound of a career getting a second chance.

I worked out for the first time since you had your surgery.  5 Oden minutes, a few Oden reps here, and a couple of Oden pull downs there.  We're going to get as many people as we can on this train, so that we can tell you that at any given moment, you can know that someone somewhere is running that mile you can't yet run, doing those extra reps, pushups, etc., that we will keep doing this until you take the floor in an NBA game, and that, most importantly, you will never have to be alone in this.  Someone somewhere will taking will have picked up the baton and been beside you for even just a few moments, until he hands it off to the next Blazermanic (or the occasional Bulls fan).

Oh, and Greg, welcome to Blazermania.  It's not just downtown celebrations, it's passionate, supportive people in tough times.

God bless, Big Fella

Believer, you have forgotten the true meaning of Alvis Day. Neither is it ham, nor pomp. Nay, the true meaning of Alvis day is drinking. Drinking and revenge.

I'll be adding...
...a brief stop in at my gym to my 7 mile walk today in support.  The pain will be nothing compared to his.  Call them my "Oden minutes" if you like.
