Tuesday Tribune

The Trib has its usual Tuesday Blazer coverage today.  Dwight Jaynes has a very complimentary column covering Zach and Oden.

Kerry Eggers has one of the best articles ever covering a ton of factual information regarding the recent past and future.  This is must read stuff.  There are too many tidbits to mention but he hints that Ime might not be with the team come fall, gives details on the Jones deal and the Zach offers, and most importantly of all tells us that SpongeBob Squarepants is among Greg Oden's favorite shows.  That young man just went up in my estimation a hundredfold.  Second to Blazers/Blazersedge t-shirts the largest collection in my shirt drawer by far is Spongebob.  Come on everybody!  Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Finally there's another Eggers article about the Blazers' semi-overwhelming Summer League team.  A reminder though, folks...who wins and loses in Summer League doesn't matter a bit.  If we lost nearly every game it wouldn't mean our players are bad.  Priorities are just different there...it's more like an extended, intense scrimmage than a competition.  Sometimes you'll play guys who specifically don't give you the best chance of winning just to see them.  So don't get all fired up over wins and losses.  Just look for trends and skills.

Oh...and that last Eggers article says Petteri Koponen's coach is urging him and the Blazers to make him a part of the NBA squad now, not later.

Fantastic stuff from the Tribune.  I am impressed.

Zombies scare me.
Ok, I loved the articles.  But does anyone else think that Dwight Jaynes' picture looks like a re-animated corpse?  How many seasons does this guy have left on the Sports beat?  Im just saying...

the tribune is
1 of the finest papers in the world.

Myself, I prefer Charmin
Less scratchy than the Trib, and doesn't clog the loo anywhere near as often.

On the other hand, the Trib is free.

Interesting
that Eggers puts Freeland on the fall roster.  I wonder if he thinks he'll be with us or in the DL. Maybe we really don't need the roster space, esp. if Miles is going to play (???!!!)

Where in the world is RipCityGal?  Now two Spaniards, the Brit, and now a Finn - if only we could have kept Schenscher for her :-)

Re: Jaynes picture... better than his previous picture, which actually gave me the creeps - the tilted head, the coy smile... I was glad to see him on Outside the Lines where he looked normal (and like the photo on this column).

Udoka wants $5m?
Man, I'd be very happy for him if he gets that somewhere. I can't imagine its with the Blazers though, at that price.

Udoka is crazy
4 to 5 millilon.. (wow)
Welcome Greg Oden

I think that was a
guess.  I have heard nothing about a number in that range.

4-5 mil? no way
Look I love Ime, but he's 30 years old and he couldn't shoot to save his life the second half of the season.  No way he gets that kind of money - from anybody.

Wow, lets hope Dmiles doesn't play
From the Eggers article: If the much-maligned veteran -- set to make $26.25 million over the next three years -- were to miss another season due to the effects of knee surgery a year ago, he could be declared retired, insurance would cover his salary for his final two seasons and he would be off the Blazer books.
Secretly, Blazer coaches and execs feel that would be the best-case scenario. The guess here, though, is Miles is going to want to play and will be on hand at some point during the preseason, ready to go.

I'm thinking Kerry
is just trying to stay pessimistic and not get his hopes up.
Welcome Greg Oden

Interesting
so McMillan would have Roy/Ime at the two, with Outlaw, Webster, Jones battling it out at the three?  Or would Martell scrounge minutes by being third string two and three?

My personal highlight.
From the Summaleeg piece by Eggers (who'd better have a son named "Hammond"):
Three summers ago, [Blazers assistant coach Bill] Bayno worked
the ABCD basketball camp in Teaneck, N.J., which featured a 16-year-old Greg Oden.
"I worked stations for five days, watched him play and coached against him," Bayno says.
"The thing that struck me was his understanding of the game.
He had obviously been well-coached. Even at that age
he knew (defensive) rotations, he knew communication ... it was impressive."

Look, my main desire for Oden is that he be the anchor for a great defensive UNIT,
that any players put around him and coached by defensive-minded Nate McMillan
(even if they had merely average, but not BAD,
track records as defenders)
would gel into a formidable team defense, like the Spurs and Pistons.

Bayno just confirmed to me that Oden can, and will, do precisely that with the Blazers.

Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

Jaynes-ee
Do you mean to tell me that Dwight Jaynes took off his a-hole jacket for 30 minutes and actually wrote a positive article? It's gotta be hard for him right now... "I know I hate sports, and especially Portland-based sports, and especially the Blazers, but this bastard Pritchard isn't giving me anything to whine about..." You've gotta give it to him, though. He doesn't care about being liked.

Miles
Having Miles back could destroy everything.  I don't understand moving Zach and then leaving the possiblity open of having a guy back who is a thousand time worse than Zach.  Waybe Miles doesn't have Zach's prescence, but he'll still find a way to undermine the team if he's around - mark my words.  Ugh.
