The Television Guys

We spent Friday talking about radio.  It's only fair that we give a little time over the weekend to talk about the television crew.

The question is simple:  What do you think of the Mikes (Barrett and Rice) and why?

I must confess that as a faithful League Pass watcher overall I am kind of disappointed with the television coverage of the NBA.  I think it's generational as much as anything.  In my mind games should be broadcast fairly impartially with excitement shown in tone and vocal modulation for good plays...especially when the home team makes them.  I like it when broadcasters broadcast and let the fans root.  Too many broadcasters try to create excitement instead of conveying the game, at least for my tastes.

That said I like Mike Barrett because he's fairly understated and has a nice way of describing things.  He seems pretty down to earth over the air which is a good demeanor for Portland.  He's obviously a fan but I guess I don't mind his rooting as much because it seems honest.  But then again maybe every fan thinks their home TV guys are honest while other teams' are complete homers.  Nevertheless Mike seems genuine, involved, and sometimes amusing.  He's a good foil for Mike Rice who is truly in a class all his own.  What that class is...that's anybody's guess, but there's sure nobody else like him anywhere in broadcasting.

So what do you think of our TV crew?  Things they do great?  Things they could do better?  How about them as compared to the league in general?  Give us your thoughts below.

By the way, after we get all done with this I'm going to talk more about the importance of non-player aspects of the NBA and these discussions will help inform that.

I love Mike's. They are a great example of
opposites complementing one another. Mike Rice often throws out inaccurate stats and generality's and often uses the wrong player's names. Does this bother me? Not at all. Barrett usually subtly corrects him and Rice keeps going off. I have loved Rice's knack for hyperbole, his crooked grin and lazy eye's since his Swami days on the radio. Rice say's whatever the hell is on his mind. You don't want to know that the play by play guy is on the Blazer's payroll. At least for me I would prefer to have the hometown announcer come across as a fan who is going to call it how he sees it about the players, managment, the league, etc.  Barrett took awhile to grow on me and I still can tell that he holds back at times. He is informed, articulate and obviously a dedicated fan. Not just an employee. I also like the fact that it seems he is close with some of the player's. I don't really get into the whole "integrity of journalism" side of things. I am a fan and as a fan you like to watch games with other fans. Even if they are the ones announcing the games. One thing I forgot to mention that I also like about Barrett is that he doesn't call the game one sided. If the Blazers get away with one he say's it. If it was a foul it was a foul. It's not like the ref's are listening to him anyway. I love the tandem and hope they stay together!

Mike and Mike on Blazer TV
I think they work great together.  Love Wild Rice and hope he stays around for many more years.

Horrible.
I don't mind Barrett all that much, to be honest.  He's a bit of a homer and exaggerates, but he seems to try.  I enjoy people who try.

Rice on the other hand is so irritating and what I consider unprofessional.  It annoys me when normal fans (and hardcore ones) can't get players right, salaries right and stats right.  When a broadcaster can't get it right it just infuriates me.  They're provided statistics before and during the game, they're given a media guide, and still they can't?  He's being paid good money for this, and he can't take an hour before the game to look over things?  To keep them by his side during the game?  For 60 plus games a year?

And then he starts in on making fun of how other team's players look and their names.  It is just so unprofessional and I feel makes the organization look a little well, bushleague or petty.  I really, really miss Snapper.

When I watch and listen to Rice I feel like I'm watching a really bad comedy act that I didn't even tune in for, but received anyways.  I wanted enlightening commentary to enjoy along with the game, and instead it's like I'm in the stands with a really annoying class clown.

I have not TV so I can't say
But I love announcers that are excited about the game, show a little more for the team, and call it fair.

If they don't know, they don't know.  If it's a foul on us, I want to hear it.

I wonder how much biased announcers have contributed to the concept that the ref's are all corrupt.

I like to be able to trust the announcer to call it as it is.

Really, I could care less
I think Rice is out there, bordering on a melt down somewhere soon. Barrett I think is kind of a nerd, but I like the fact that he is well-informed and seems like a real fan. Impartiality, for what it's worth, belongs only on networks, and I don't really consider Fox Sports Net a real network, just a regional broadcast. So, all in all, I'm fine. When they start talking about tennis and stuff like that (prunes for Rice) I just pretend I'm at the game and ignore them like the morons at games who don't pay attention to the game.
Hate the game, not the player.

by Rodendridge on Jul 28, 2007 8:50 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I hated Rice at first
He was largely innacurate when first taking over. Even as a average fan at the time, I heard a couple things a game that came out Rices mouth and just werent true.  But then I heard he got ejected from a game AS A ANNOUNCER!!  How great is that!!! Now I see him as a wirey old man looking for good times and laughs. You got to love any announcer passionate enough about their team to get ejected.  I love the way he yells out how bad of a call something was when refs are near. He is just a prankster and I find that entertaining and good for the team.

Barrett was pretty dull at 1st, but I believe he is one of the most unbiased announcers as far as home games go. He will say if the blazers "got away with one there", he is not just out to make the blazers look good, hes out to tell it like he sees it from a blazes fans perspective.

by myemic23 on Jul 28, 2007 9:11 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I very much like Barrett. Just is whole
announcing style is pleasing to me with just a couple minor exceptions.  One was the game following the birh of Brandon Roy's son. My lord I wish I would have counted the times he had to mention it that night.  Give me a break here Mike, given that everyone who's ever been on this earth was a baby, births are not all that uncommon and hardly rate umpteen mentions of one during a single broadcast. But I hope Mike is around for a thousand years.

The wild one can be great fun as long is M.B is there to keep him in check a bit.  I do get irritated with him though when he jumps into one of his long stories when the game is still being played which is getting no reporting whatsoever. Sometimes Barrett will break in and cut him off but I wish Rice would occassionally sense what he is doing on his own. I like the way the two seem to truly get along.  Both will shoot some good natured jabs at the other but its all in fun.

Rice in my mind is a huge, huge, tremendous, extreme, heart gladening  upgrade over Steve Jones!!!  Jones was such an arrogant, condascending, know it all who always did everything he could  to discredit the several play-by-play guys he worked with.  He was the only one who was supposed to know anything about basketball and he wasn't going to let any of his play-by-play guys offer any insight to the game that might not quite agree with and therefore diminish his 'expert' commentaries.  There were many games where it felt like he was spending more time critiqing his play by play partner than he did the game.    He was such a jerk and from what I gathered from an article I read in the Oregonian a long time ago, I think he was responsible for running some good announcers out of town.  You could just feel the friction between them during games.  I can honestly say when I read he was leaving the broadcast crew, that was one of my favorite Blazers moments ever ... ranking just behind the championship. It meant I no longer had to listen to him game after game during the season, putting down his sidekick and hearing over and over again, how "they've got to to this, they've got to do that" (there was of course no choice ... they "had" to do it, he was after all THE expert).  Another of his famous lines that I doubt he ever left out of a single game was "there's plenty of time left".  I've never disliked any announcer more.

Someone wondered (I think in this blog a couple days ago) why Jones didn't have a steady national gig.  I don't know if he does or not, but if he doesn't I for one surely understand why.

There aren't that many things I feel this strongly about ... that's how much his disrespect of his announcers irritated me. So, Mike Rice gets extremely generous grading from me based solely on the fact that he was the one to replace Snapper Jones.  But as I mentioned above, I really enjoy the Mikes at the Mike. and

That's funny, because I was just lamenting how much I missed Jones the broadcast booth.  It had never really occurred to me that someone could dislike Jones, let alone have a deep seeded disdain for his work.  Different strokes I guess.

I liked the Snapper
I have to respectfully disagree.  I thought Jones was very good.  Yes, he acted like a know-it-all because he usually did know more than the person he was paired with.  Clearly his pairing with Bill Walton was legendary.  Bill would say silly things and contradict himself throughout a game and Jones would call him on it.  I thought it was great, funny, obvious.  I miss the Snapper.  If the other announcers didn't like him, too bad.  I thought he was great for the broadcast and provided interesting and accurate insight.

Snapper Jones
Was the best Color Commentary guy we have ever had.  He was insightful, intelligent and very likeable.  When he went to ABC I was very sad.

I don't despise Jones...
but I see what you are saying.  He could be a bit of a nose in the air kind of guy.  Overall I thought he was pretty good but he had his moments of pettiness that came through on the air.

I did meet him once.  He came into a place I had been working for only a couple of months and was still getting to know the particulars of the business.  I usually helped customers as they came in.  If what they needed was simple I could get them on their way or I would find a salesperson who could get them the info they needed.

I believe I was able to answer a couple of his questions but then hit a snag and offered to get a salesperson.  I can't remember exactly what his advice to me was but it was along the lines of, "You need to learn your stuff, son." Some people can say something like that and you learn from it, others just come across like arrogant jerks.  Steve was the latter.

Steve Jones
I always loved Steve Jones; if he was occasionally condescending to his broadcasting partners, it was usually well-deserved.  His own commentary was always well-informed and delivered with warmth and humor.  He not only had the hoops credentials as a former ABA great, but he clearly did his homework.  Having said all that, I did suspect he might be a grumpy type off camera.

Then one day I happened to meet Jones and I found out otherwise.  I had a towncar driving gig, and I picked up Jones after midnight following a grueling trip on which he'd lost his voice.  I figured he might take my head off if I asked him about hoops.  But I couldn't help myself, so I finally did ask him a question about his ABA days.

Well, for the next 30 minutes I had the most entertaining hoops conversation of my life.  Off-camera, Jones was just as personable as on, except even more candid.  His knowledge and love of basketball was really remarkable.  That was one driving job I'd have done for free, but Jones insisted on giving me a nice tip.  I was very disappointed when, soon afterwards, health problems forced Jones to cut back on his broadcasting.

A quick note about the Mikes: I enjoy them both, and think they have fine chemistry.  I just wish Rice would tone his officiating criticism down a notch.  Correct or no, after a certain point it detracts from one's enjoyment of the game.  They dress the refs like zebras for a reason--you're not supposed to notice them.  Sure, point out when they butcher a call.  But don't let them become the focal point of the broadcast.

Steve Jones
A good friend of mine got in a minor fender-bender near Lloyd Center with Snapper in the early-mid 1980's. My friend said Snap was driving a Ford Thunderbird, and was an arrogant a**hole about the whole thing.

More Jones
Well, I don't want to discount your friend's account re/ the fender bender or that of the guy who got dressed down for not having all the answers at his job.  However, my account is true also: the Steve Jones I met was the most personable, courteous, and entertaining guy imaginable.

We're probably like the blind men describing the elephant, if you know the parable.  I'd certainly hate to be judged by the public at large for a few isolated cases of grumpy behavior on bad days.  Lacking more ancecdotes, I'd tend to give Jones the benefit of the doubt: he's likely a great guy who has his crabby moments.

I think I'm jaded
by the fact that none of the announcers are named Steve Jones.  I don't mind the guys they have working the games now, but Steve was GENIUS and so the games now are just so-so.  The Mikes certainly don't make me want to change the channel (the Blazers have made me want to do that a few times the past couple of years).

tv
I like our guys just fine, though I miss The Snapper.  If they are a bit biased towards our team, that's OK.  I think Barrett is great, probably as much for his blog work as for his game time calls.  I appreciate the extra effort to connect with the fans.  Rice is a bit of a goofy old guy, but he's a legend in my mind for being the only broadcaster ever thrown out of an NBA game.  That's pretty cool.  :-)

But, above all else, I think the focus of the broadcast should always be the game, not the announcers or anything else.  Announcers that go on extended diatribes about barely related topics while interesting things happen on the floor bother me.  But, our guys are pretty good and don't do this much.

But, a growing trend that really gets my dander up is the celebrity interviews while the game is going on.  WTF!  ESPN is by far the worst offender, but others are doing it too.  Last year, during Monday Night Football (I know, stay will me here) ESPN spent the entire 2nd quarter interviewing Matthew McConaughey!!!  You'd barely know there was a game being played.

During the NBA playoffs last year, both ESPN and TNT were doing this during at least some of the games.  Maybe not movies stars for entire quarters, but retired players sitting in the stands would be interviewed for 5+ minutes during game play.  Seriously, when the game is on, the game is on! That's what we tuned in to see.  Do your interviews during halftime or timeouts, never while the game clock is ticking.

That's my rant...

by go52 on Jul 28, 2007 10:23 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree completely
the announcers are there to tell us what is happening and provide some context and then let us watch the game. Rice and Barrett are not terrible but do not rate the type of team we all believe the Blazers will become.

i like the mikes... not perfect? so what? i really liked Steve Jones though... smart guy.

I know what you mean about "Too many broadcasters try to create excitement instead of conveying the game, at least for my tastes."

i notice a trend on radio where the anchor will play a call an announcer made of a play, then the anchor comes back with that was so and so with the play by play... I never used to hear that.... the announcers now get their 15 seconds of fame?

Geeze, what a time we live in!

Mikes
I love Barrett. I think he understands the game fairly well, and he's much more honest then about 95% of the other commentators. I also love when he says ''Got away with a travel there'' in the most sarcastic tone possible. I also love how laid back and down to earth he is as well.

Mike Rice is hilarious but he's such a homer. I hate other commentators like this but I understand their suppose to be fans. He's wacky and out there but he's funny. I do think he meshes well with MB though.

I like Mike Barrett
I actually really enjoy Mike Barrett, but well I guess I feel about Mike Rice how most of us do.  Sometimes I just don't understand the things he says.  Does he really believe them?  There are times that I'd rather listen to Bill Walton than Rice, and that's saying something.  Because if I have to hear Bill Walton tell me one more time that any current player is the greatest of all time at whatever he dreams up at the time I'm going to flip.

Also
I really like Tom Tolbert for TNT.  He's always got something intelligent to say, and he's not afraid to call out Bill Walton for something stupic he said.

And my take on other commentators for other cities that I've listened to on League Pass or the like, is that they mostly are very bland, and don't have a lot of interesting things to say.  However, I do have to point out that part of the appeal for us and the Mike's is we know them and their voices are familiar and we associate them with the Blazers organization which we like.  So maybe if I had that same connection with some other commentators I'd feel differently about them.

Also...

I miss Snapper.

Pulling for Barrett
I'm a big Mike Barrett fan, and here's why:

When I was a sophomore in high school, I started doing PA announcing for the football and baseball teams (basketball was taken).  The experience was enjoyable enough that I decided I might like to be a broadcaster someday.  When our principal got wind of this, he took it upon himself to try to get me an internship or job shadow opportunity with Mike Barrett (an alum of my school and at that time the Blazers' studio host).  This was still in the Trader Bob Era, so it wasn't a complete surprise when management rejected the idea of an outsider poking his nose around at One Center Court.  However, Mike was good enough to ask his father - who coached my school's basketball team for decades well before my time - to meet with me and discuss broadcasting as a career.  Through this discussion, I got some great insights on how to pursue work in both broadcasting and sports journalism, and Mr. Barrett gave me the distinct impression that Mike had wanted to do all he could to help me.  Though my studies eventually took me in an entirely different direction, I will always be grateful to the Barrett's for giving me - a snot-nosed 16 year-old if ever there was one - the time of day when the organization was letting me down.

Also, does anyone else miss Snapper's "Keys to the Game?"  My brothers and I loved trying to guess what order "Turnovers, Shooting, and Energy" would come in, because it was almost always some combination of the three.  Now that was fun.

to a degree, barrett goes overboard about roy getting stars treatment, something b.roy has to earn.while his despise for manu giniobli and the spurs are so evident.well s.elliott is about to co author a book called "the shot".a buddy of mine works for sports publishing, and the book is about how is 3 on memorial day 1999 started the spurs dynasty.something i have been saying for a while, elliott loves to let the bandwagons know how is 3 started something special in s.antonio.and the beginning of the blazers oblivion.the book should be ready by the nba finals, providing the spurs will be in the finals.which i seriously doubt anyway rockets babee book it !!!!as for rice,if people have a problem with a 67 year old man.please get a damn life seriously he's harmless.

Insane

I like Steve Jones on the radio when he's talking to fans. He will correct them if they don't know what the heck they're talking about. But on tv, my god, he said the same things every game. My own mother couldn't stand the sound of his voice. I've always wondered why we feel the need to have the same commentators on every game. Shouldn't it be a rotating basis?

I can stand Jones if he's with Walton because the two arn't afraid of slamming each other. Former teammates and all. More folks hate Walton's commentating than anyone else cept maybe Dick Vital who is the worst commentator of any sport in the history of broadcasting.

I have no problems with Barret and Rice. I like Rice actually because he does not say the same thing over and over.

Now is it true, as someone told me once, that he said the quote, "Like a rim shot in a titty bar." on live radio? Anyone here this or hear of it?

great for fans, but not the best out there
I love Barrett and Rice for home-town calls, don't get me wrong, but both have their flaws.

-Barrett is, as noted, sometimes too much a homer and too sarcastic about calls. Sometimes that leads to gold ("Blazers get a 5-on-3 breakaway...and pull back to wait for help," or however that exactly went) but on rare occasions it's too whiny.

-like mentioned near the top, Rice sometimes doesn't get facts right...thankfully he's nowhere NEAR John Madden levels of being senile as hell, but it does remind me of auto racing announcer David Hobbs, who sometimes stumbles across sentences but it still a lovable old guy.

Don't get me wrong, I love the broadcasts, but you have to understand and accept their flaws.

By the way, Marv Albert is what basketball sounds like in heaven. That he's on contract with TNT and can't join ABC for the Finals is a damn shame.

Mike Barrett sucks
He is a terrible homer, who exaggerates to the point of absurdity, and he is the worst whiner about officials I have seen.  Whenever I can watch a different feed on League Pass I do so.  Mike Rise is funny, and surprisingly observant, with good things to add.

The worst announcer in the entire NBA is Gil Gregor with the Hornets.  He is flat out rotten.

i think barrett had a point about the officials
nba officiating sucks, I know its a hard job but if I were a announcer I would have a tough time not pointing out the refs mistakes. Especially when they are hurting our chance to win.  Just look at Spurs vs Suns gm 3, worst reffing I have EVER seen. there were very obvious fouls that happened right in front of refferees with no call. Yes Tim D was reffing this game but it was all 3 officials making atroshish calls and non calls.   Judge for yourself:

Miss Snapper
I thought Snapper was great...I loved the occasional national games when he really called walton out for some of his idiotic comments.

I liked Eddie Doucette, OK... he seemed like the kind of old school guy that knocked back a few cocktails right after the game (and occasionally right before!).  Plus he would sometimes where those sweet Eddie Sutton like circa 1984 suits!

Pete Pranica though was absolutely horrible!  He must have been someone's nephew because this guy had no business outside of a minor league ballpark somewhere in the midwest boonies.

Barrett is a huge upgrade over Pranica!

My favorite Eddie Doucette/Snapper exchange:

Eddie:  "I'm telling you Joe Kleine has no business playing in the NBA".

Snap: (laughs) "Eddie you can't say that!"

Eddie:  "I just did!"

While Steve Jones was by far the most astute of
past Blazer analyst I too started finding him obnoxious his last couple of years here. Perhaps he was burnt out and no longer wanted to be here with the culture that was in place and the fact that he had a higher dollar and higher status national gig. Back in the glory days of the early 90's their was no one better than Steve Jones. But man...I could not agree more with TSE's earlier comments. The Snapper got awfully snarky there towards the end. It's seems as if he were waiting for his counter part to say something that he could belittle or laugh at condescendingly. You all know the type. There are people who you can have a great and easy going conversation with that both parties enjoy. Or there are those people who take every opportunity they can to correct you. The conversation no longer flows as easily. Steve quite frankly came off as a jerk.

I really like Barrett
and Rice is okay, a little comedic relief. Barrett is awesome--not too depressed when the team isn't doing well for one thing.

But here is a pet peeve of mine: the TV angles. Sometimes they switch JUST AS A PLAY IS HAPPENING to the stupid, stupid under-the-hoop shot where all you can see is armpits and knees. Then they go back and show the replay, and what do they do? THEY SHOW THE SAME SHOT. You can't see the spacing on the floor, or what the guy had to do to get into the position, all you can see is a bunch of flailing arms and then the ball coming through the hoop.

I hope someone from the Blazers is reading this. They need to tell their camera shot manager to not go to that shot unless it absolutely shows the best angle on something, like someone stepping on the baseline or something.

Mike and Mike
I really like Mike Rice with his comments and analysis.   I have followed the Blazers from the very beginning of the franchise and think Rice is close to the top in analysts who have worked Blazer games.   I did not play much basketball so do not know plays and defenses very well.   Rice provides great information on what is happening and compares players with others in the league.  He provides context.

I do not see all that many errors.

Of course, I think Bill Schonely was the best ever in Portland  --  despite his obvious and many mistakes.   He made basketball games fun and Rice does also.

Mike Barret does good work and is far better than the radio guy.   I do wish play by play TV announcers across the world would actually do more play by play and not assume every watcher is watching intently every moment -- some of us do read and talk with friends or spouses and take breaks to go to the john or get snacks/meals  during the game.

Great Walton Moments
The Snapper once contradicted Walton About a Loose Ball foul under the hoop. Walton boomed "when's the last time you where in the paint Jones!!" Too Funny. Or the time just after the Marv Albert bite-gate, when Chuck Oakley pulled down a rebound early in the game and swung an elbow. I like both Mikes
and my wife loves them... she really gets a kick out of Rice.  Did anyone see the "Man Crush" game last season?  Rice mentioned how good JJ looks, what a muscular physique he has, etc. and Barrett said it sounds like he has a little bit of a Man-Crush... it was very, very funny, because it did sound like he had a Man-Crush.

I think they make a great team and really do a good job at informing while keeping it fun and routing for the good-guys.  Yes Rice's facts are sometimes out there, but I can live with that.  I think for the luke-warm fan they make the game more enjoyable.  Even the informed fan will pick up information that you may not have known on a fairly regular basis.

It has to be an interesting thing to prepare the pre-game Keys to the game, etc... when it's an expected blow-out (not in our favor) because they are so optimistic universally, even when we have little or no chance... but I suppose every season there are many unexpected turns of fate where the significant underdogs prevail.

who was the play-by-play guy
in the late 80s?  i can't remember his name and it's killing me.  anyway, it's probably just nostalgia, but i have fond memories of him and snapper.

i moved from portland before barrett started, so i've actually never heard him call a game.  i'll remedy that with the league pass this year.  mike gorman here in boston is fantastic.

Pat Lafferty
I recall a taped pre-game show in San Antonio when Lafferty and Jones were paired together in a very small boat on one of the local waterways. As the show was concluding Steve looked at Lafferty and said something like "no, you're not going to do it". Then Lafferty put down his mic and intentionally went head-first into the water. Too funny!!!!

I love the Mikes
Barrett used to seem boring to me, at first, but he is really just laid back because he is trying to do his job the best he can. After you get to know him you pick up on his sarcasm he throws in there sometimes, which is great--it allows you to sense that he is a real fan without going overboard and becoming an annoying homer. I just get the sense that he's a really genuine guy that cares about the team a lot.

Mike Rice, as has been said, does have a lot of valuable things to say when you really pay attention, and once you get to know him i think you can see that he sounds crazy sometimes not because e is genuinely insane or out of touch, but because he is a goofy old guy that wants to have fun. You get the sense that he figures "heck, I'm old, I'm gonna say whatever I want, and have some fun along the way" He IS a prankster, that's the perfect word. He is like your sarcastic, goofy friend watching the game with you, not a high and mighty announcer that has to be perfect. Then Mike Barrett subtly makes fun of Rice with his sarcasm when he says crazy things, but he knows Rice is just running his mouth and doesnt take it too seriously.

I remember one of the games against the lakers, in 05-06, when Rice just went off on Phil Jackson's personal, padded chair that he brought along with him on road games, calling it his Throne, and just going off all game... me and my buddy were almost in tears, I'll never forget that...

mike barrett
Maybe i've just grown up and started noticing things like spin and bias, but i don't recall any of the past announcers being so homer-ific as MB.  The constant complaining about blown calls makes me want to turn the radio on and listen to Wheels instead, but Antonio Harvey is such a bore.  Send Harvey and Barrett to the d-league.
I enjoy Rice, simply because old men tend to say some unintentionally (and occasionally intentionally) hilarious things from time to time.
Definitely miss Snapper's keys to the game.
As a side note, Eddie Doucette called one of the Blazer summer league games.  Classy commentator, that Doucette.

I like them both
Mike Rice is great for all the reasons stated above.  I think Mike Barrett is still trying to find his niche, but I also think he'll do a fine job once he does.  MB also gets props for his excellent blog entries.

Together they are really fun to listen to, in contrast to some of the national announcers (Hint: Bill Walton)

I agree the homerism is laid on a little thick at times by these two in regards to the refs.  But I can live with that.

Bill King
I weighed in earlier on this Blazer announcer question, saying I liked Jones (who I met once) and both Rices.  But in all honesty, Warriors' announcer Bill King spoiled me for life.  I realize the first announcer we hear will always have a special place in our hearts.  That's the guy whose enthusiasm for the game got us hooked in the first place.

But any of you out there who also grew up in the Bay Area will probably back me on this: Bill King was in a league of his own.  Like all great announcers, he truly loved the game and conveyed that passion.  But beyond that, he was remarkably articulate and intelligent (the guy carried opera scores around with him on the road). Further, King had a auctioneer's delivery that enabled him to relay so much information so quickly that you could visualize virtually everything that was happening on the court.  It was amazing.
