DRAFT TIME! First Round

Welcome to the live coverage of the NBA Draft on Blazersedge.

First news out of the gate tonight:

Jason Quick has confirmed that the Blazers will select Greg Oden from Ohio State with the first pick in the draft.  Oden's agency spoke with Quick this afternoon.

Stay tuned for pick-by-pick and trade-by-trade coverage as the draft progresses.

Wait...what's this? New York police have apprehended a guy sneaking up behind Greg Oden with a lead pipe. The back of his t-shirt said DraftKevinDurant.com while the front said, "Gillooly RULEZ!" More on this story as it develops...

Update: ESPN has started their draft coverage and the opening montage showed Yi Jianlian trying to open a bottle of Sprite. He couldn't figure out how to get the cap off. I'm not sure if that's an omen but it probably doesn't speak well for his motor skills.

Update: ESPN is reporting that Kevin Garnett will NOT be moved tonight. The Seattle Ray Allen for #5, West, and Szczerbiak trade is being mentioned. Marcus Camby and Monta Ellis were mentioned in other trade possibilities.

Update: The yakety-yak is done. The draft is coming up next!

Stephen A Smith makes a public backtrack on his past criticism and gives Portland credit. Commissioner Stern approaches the podium...

With the first pick of the 2007 NBA Draft the Portland Trailblazers select...Greg Oden of Ohio State University! The Seattle SuperSonics are now on the clock.

They showed a shot of the Portland war room. Everyone was standing, applauding, and high-fiving.

Update: KP talking now about his "process". Says the deciding factor was who is going to get to the championship level. He says it's centers with athletic ability, character, and ability to change the game on both ends of the floor.

UPDATE ON THE TRADE RUMOR: Jason Quick says the accurate trade is Zach Randolph, Dan Dickau, and Freddie Jones for Steve Francis and Channing Frye. He says he believes the deal is done but he is waiting for confirmation from Kevin Pritchard to go to print.

TRADE IS ANNOUNCED ON ESPN...Standing ovation in Knick land (obviously).

Watch out for Stephen A. Smith reaction.

There's GOT to be another aspect to this, right? This was the best offer we could get for Zach? Here's my theory: Commissioner Stern comes to KP a month ago and says, "We're going to rig the first pick for you but you have to help the Knicks." That's the only thing I can think of right now.

24. Phoenix Rudy Fernandez, Spain

Trade Announced: The Portland Trailblazers have bought the 24th pick, Rudy Fernandez from Phoenix for cash considerations.

25. Utah Morris Almond, Rice

26. Houston Aaron Brooks, Oregon

Update: ESPN is reporting that Yi Jianlian's camp is threatening that he might not show up for media conferences in Milwaukee tomorrow.

Update: Seattle's #35 pick is also a part of the above-mentioned trade.

27. Detroit Aaron Afflalo, UCLA

28. San Antonio Tiago Splitter, Brazil

29. Phoenix Alando Tucker, Wisconsin

I Am Jacked
I'm doing a little live blogging over at my place, fwiw, but I'll be dropping in here to savor the MOST EXCITING NIGHT FOR BLAZERS FANS IN THIS MILLENNIUM.

Oops.  Sorry for shouting.  Did I mention I'm pretty Jacked?

It's finally time!
Almost a month of waiting and endless speculation are about to come to an end with the draft here. Ironically, after the draft we will have more waiting and endless speculation again.

I'm agreeing with Stephen A Smith, and we've only just started.

PP, Ray Allen, Al Jefferson sounds like a pretty good combo to me, along with Rajon Rondo.  A little weak in the middle but that sounds like a respectable squad.

--Dave

by Dave on Jun 28, 2007 4:20 PM PDT reply actions

I disagree.
Oden is loose and comfortable in the spotlight. Durant is uptight and awkward. IMO.

by grimc on Jun 28, 2007 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

being loose
Being loose with the press has nothing to do with being a franchise player. Talent and desire do.

by jm @ Blazer's Edge on Jun 28, 2007 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions

But
Dave's comment was based on Oden's demeanor with the press.

"Starting at center, for your Portland Trailblazers...Greg...Oden!"

Get used to it.

by grimc on Jun 28, 2007 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Durant's interview on TrueHoop
I just read Henry Abbott's recap of his interview with Durant, and I'm not too excited. It sounded like he was acting like an uninterested teenager rather than a potential franchise guy. We'll see how this all shakes out, but Oden looks (like he's 40 but that's cool), sounds, and acts like a franchise guy, IMO. Only time can tell though.
Please KP, Give Portland a little bit of Oden...

by berrygraham on Jun 28, 2007 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

actually
all that matters is how they act on the court and if you've watched oden play, he is all business.

by sergioFTW on Jun 28, 2007 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree
Durant has seemed a little shy at times, but most of the times I've seen him (especially ESPN) he's seemed pretty charismatic. I think he's going to evolve into a big-time media darling once he becomes more familiar with talking to the media all the time. Remember, he's only 18.

But Oden, he's just a natural!

by matthewcc on Jun 28, 2007 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Honestly, I'll always
think that Durant's a better choice, but really it's hard to complain with a guy whose floor is Alonzo/Dikembe territory, I think Deek is one of the most underrated players of the past decade.  If Oden gets 15/14/4, shooting 55% on putbacks and opportunity junk buckets, I'll be ecstatic.

by howlingfantods on Jun 28, 2007 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Maturity...
Comes later to some people than others. Seems like Oden is growing up a little slower than Durant, but then Durant was groomed for this from a young age where Oden seems a little more like a teenager getting out on his own. He's excited to be getting the opportunity, but it seems like he's being honest about the fact that there are elements of his youth he's reluctant to let go of. I think most players experience that coming out of college, but Oden's just a little more candid about it than most. He'll be fine once he puts on that Blazers jersey and wins his first NBA tip-off.

Besides, from what I've heard he's going to have family moving to town with him.

cant understand...
why conley is projected at 3

by jameyemail on Jun 28, 2007 4:26 PM PDT reply actions

His ceiling is
in the Isiah, Chris Paul territory.  He can't shoot that well, but there's no reason to think he can't learn; his mechanics aren't too bad.

Although I think he goes 4, I don't think you can pass up Horford at 3.

by howlingfantods on Jun 28, 2007 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

this is one of those
years where teams are desperate for point play but there is a dearth of point talent, hence the reach for Conley at 3

Why is everyone so down on JJ????  He is a good kid, with plenty of skills and has already proven himself to a certain degree / gotten through some of the tough learning years for a PG.  I say KEEP JJ, unless we are TOTALLY overwhelmed by the offer.  And before you say he needs to be moved to make way for the great Sergio, look into your heart of hearts and really remember how many games that Sergio really was AMAZING.  In reality it was only a couple, yeah he had amazing PLAYS here and there, but for the most part JJ was the consistently good point gaurd maybe not as flashy but better over the long run.  Now, I along with everyone else hopes that Sergio turns into the next nash, but lets not put that on him this year.

Watson would be hard to move, except perhaps for Speedy Claxton or some other player who is similarily overpaid.

Green at 3, KD at 4
though that might just be for..whoa Transformers does look pretty good...anyway... that might just be the official listing for the depth chart. They can definitely play on the same team. They were saying the knock on Green is he passes too much... that's a perfect "problem" when you're paired with KD.

Man, I really like the Bobcats right now. They have a lot of good young talent. Hate their name, love their team, especially in the Least. If they can land Rashard or a good veteran or two, they're looking like a team that could make a serious run in the playoffs, especially if they can (YEAH SPIKE!) re-sign Wallace.

To answer fatty's question
(which got deleted apparently because Fatty violated the Verbal Morality Code), haven't hear much.

But that doesn't mean anything--many of the big Blazer trades last year weren't picked up by the press until they were a done deal.

The big rumor is of course Zach to NY, but that's not likely to happen today, if at all.  The versions of that rumor range from barely tolerable (Zach for Frye/Rose) to downright terrible (Zach+Webster for Frye/Francis)

So far, no real surprises

The draft has followed the script of many of the mocks.  Green was a bit of a reach at #5, but even that wasn't a surprise given all the statheads dissing on Corey Brewer--a guy whose strength (defense) is hard to measure from the boxscore.

not as a starter
if we trade Randolph, Noah would be the primary backup at 4 and 5. He'd get plenty of minutes and would bring some big time energy off the bench.

zach, freddie, dickau for Frye and Francis (or Malik Rose)

we're gonna buyout Francis, so he won't actually come here, but so basicallyd end up with Frye instead of Randolph.

it would be more of a financial deal then anything else...(dumping zach's contract for Frye's rookie contract).

Now you can see that Zbo is seen by the rest of the NBA as a joke, and that's why Portland got a washed up joke (Francis) and a soft, bust of a PF that can't rebound (Frye).

Zach was worth squat, and that's what Portland got for him.

by wetblanket on Jun 28, 2007 6:25 PM PDT reply actions

Hmmmmm.....
that's why all of NY is rejoicing right now.

by JasonT on Jun 28, 2007 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

hmmmm...
They're rejoicing because they're a hopeless wreck of a team anyway, and trading squat for squat at least shakes up the squat.  Let's see how much they're rejoicing when they get a load of Zach's whining, crying, and lazy-ass defense.  Those NY crowds will obliterate him once they see him play.

They're going to blow either way.  This trade is stupid for NY as well.  They now have Curry and Randolph as a frontcourt, both of whom blow on defense, can't block shots, are poor rebounders, and are black holes on offense that can't pass and dribble out the shot clock 75% of time they have the ball.

sorry for the repeat, but GOOD deal for Fred
here's what I posted above, I think Fred wins in this big time. He's burred on the charts in Portland, he can become super popular here in new york:

the Knicks are terrible. Fred Jones has a real chance not only to punch through into the starting lineup, but to become a real fan favorite with his dunking.

Actually, this is exceptionally good for Fred. In Portland he's stuck behind Roy battling Webster. In NY he's (on top of being in hoops mecca) he's got to battle with Quentin Richardson for playing time.

Extra exceptional when you consider its only a matter of time before Thomas maxes him out.

"Send '23/10' to the Knicks for garbage?"

The problem with that 23/10 is that whoever he guarded would put up 30/15.

Worst 23/10 in NBA history.

and they trade him to the sixers for Daequan?  What, DWade isn't a good enough 2 guard for them?

Does KP think he's going to be able to
attract a big time free agent with the cap room?

by JasonT on Jun 28, 2007 6:39 PM PDT reply actions

I'm thinking
he's doing two things:

  1. creating cap space for free agents, and
  2. creating roster slots for our second rounders.

If he's as high on some of the second round guys as we've been hearing, we needed to figure out how to create roster slots and playing time for them, this trade accomplishes all of those things.

The second issue is Frye; a year ago, people thought Frye was one of the best bigs from last year's rookie class.  He slumped a bit this year, but keep in mind how dysfunctional New York is; they played him out of position at SF a lot (which is a position he really can't play).  He may very well be someone who can be a very productive player in this league.

by howlingfantods on Jun 28, 2007 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

we get what we asked for...
the trade was made necessary by what the fans wanted:
  • Drafting Oden
  • Improving the team's culture
  • Clearing cap space to get a free agent SF

On 1080 Oden was asked if he was going to shoot craps in Las Vegas and he's like "I like winning, not losing. I'll give my money to charity." Right on! Gambling is for losers who can't do math, and apparently Greg can do math.

we just bought phoenix's pick at 24?
is this true?

by Blazerfanstuckinraptorland on Jun 28, 2007 6:44 PM PDT reply actions

go for Almond!
While we're at it we should just buy up all of Phoenix's first rounders for the next few years. That team is weird--they could probably use Almond off the bench, definitely could have used Sergio, but they'd rather save the $2 million a year. Oh well, our gain.

Got to take off, sadly, but I'm hoping for some good news when I get back, especially on the Francis front. By that I mean I hope he's gone before he even picks a jersey number.

Sean Willians and Zach Randolph in one day.

Hey Thomas, I hear Mike Tyson doesn't have a NBA contract, and he's got some good upper body strength, low post moves, and will make Bowen look like Grant Hill. Get it done.

(I might have to get knicks season tickets this year just for the freaskshow).

NJ and NY are the same team anyway. Saddled with idiotic players with  apatheitc contracts (wait, reverse that).

Character
I thought the Blazers were pushing character like Isiah Rider pushing stolen cell phones. Then they go and trade their most proven commodity for a whiner (I don't want to play in Vancouver, trade me from Houston, I want to play 40 mins a game or not at all, no I am not pregnant and no I did not gain 40 lbs) and in the deal as a throw in you add the hometown guy who gave up 3.5 mil and a year on his contract to come home? Freddie Jones is an exciting player, a Sportscenter top 10 regular, having gone to Barlow High myself and have seen Freddie around a lot (in high school he was 20 times more skilled and athletic than anyone he faced) and from what I've heard he is a great guy and a friend of Oden. No offense to Dickau but no one is gonna miss him. I hope Freddie get to play more, he is fun to watch. '23 and 10' was wasted, I can't believe no one in the league wanted him, these are the people that are going to offer Anderson Varaejo $8mil a year to have a fraction of the impact '23 and 10' brings. What is Pritch thinking??? Wouldn't it have been better to 'let the dominoes fall' as he said and try to make some type of deal once you see who doesn't want to be left out of the fun or just hold pat?

by morescrillaigots on Jun 28, 2007 6:52 PM PDT reply actions

Dude
I'm sure they're buying out Stevie Franchise's contract.  I'm surprised they couldn't get more for him, but this was a capspace deal, don't focus on the guy whose contract we're nullifying asap.

What is Francis' contract look like?  Even if we do buy him out, that doesn't come off the cap does it?

I don't like the Zach trade one bit.  Frye is a poor mans Aldridge and doesn't solve the minutes logjam at the pf/c spot

Fernandez?
Do the Blazers want him to/does he want to play here next year? Is he going to stashed over Spain? I thought Morris Almond was the pick for sure, but from what has been written he's a Martell with less upside. Nice job by the Suns, in the past three years they've sold Robinson, Rodriguez and now the #24 to save money while paying Marcus (don't need to rob) Banks.

Dave, I'm looking forward to your post tommorrow
I'll be going to bed around 9:00pm. My head is spinning trying to sort out what the roster looks like with 3 first round contracts and the Zach trade. I'll be looking for good analysis on how this affects Udoka, Outlaw, Blake, etc. Just as I trust K.P. to make the right moves I trust you to explain it to me (as you work late into the morning) so that when I get up it's all there. Thanks for the effort.

Cheers.

So we picked three guys,
two of whom we probably won't see for at least a year or two.  But we created all these roster slots.  So I guess we can assume that we're very high on our second round prospects coming in and filling some roster slots, or we're going to be spreading our MLE around very thinly.
