THE OFFICIAL BLAZERSEDGE MOCK DRAFT

Here we go!  Check this thread throughout the day as Blazersedge versions of NBA GMs select their way through the first round of the 2007 NBA draft.  I will e-mail each GM for their selection as their turn comes up.  Several BE versions of famous media-types have promised to add comments as well.

1. Portland Trailblazers Greg Oden
2. Seattle Supersonics Kevin Durant
3. Atlanta Hawks Al Horford
4. Memphis Grizzlies Brandan Wright
5. Boston Celtics Yi Jianlian
6. Milwaukee Bucks Corey Brewer
7. Minnesota Timberwolves Jeff Green
8. Charlotte Bobcats Joakim Noah
9. Chicago Bulls Spencer Hawes
10. Sacramento Kings Al Thornton
11. Atlanta Hawks Acie Law

The Philadelphia 76'ers are now on the clock. But wait! The news coverage is breaking in...

BESPN is cutting in to the 2007 draft coverage because we have learned of a trade just executed, and it’s a large one.

The Portland Trailblazers have traded Zach Randolph, Joel Przybilla, and Jarrett Jack to the Philadelphia 76’ers for Andre Miller, Kyle Korver, Steven Hunter and selections #12 and #30 from this year’s draft.

We go to Trailblazers GM Kevin Pritchard for comment.

It’s always difficult to lose a player with the talent level of Zach Randolph. But we have faith in our young core of big men…Lamarcus Aldridge and of course now Greg Oden. We wanted to give them the time and space to develop into leaders on the floor and that would have been difficult with Zach out there. We have filled two needs on our team with this trade, with Andre Miller providing excellent veteran experience at the point guard while some of our younger players develop and Kyle Korver giving us outside shooting that we lacked. Andre’s guiding hand will be particularly important with the rest of the team being so young. Of course we also value the contributions Jarrett Jack and Joel Przybilla have made to our team. We gave up a lot of talent but we also got a lot of talent in return. Plus we are very excited about who we can get with this next pick.

We should hopefully have comments from Philadelphia GM RockingHarder on the trade soon.

In the meantime…who is KP so excited about? Vote in the comment section of the post just above for who the Blazers will take with the 12th pick. The voting will be open until noon tomorrow.

Durant?  The kid can't even bench 185.  Someone needs to take him into a back room and beat the heck out of him.

This is the worst thing to ever happen to the NBA! Both these kids going to the northwest, were going to have to stay up till 1 am to watch these kids. They don't ballhog like Kobe though, so there's no way I will stay up to watch them.

Procedural question

I'm assuming GMs notify you of our picks by email, right?  Do you want analysis, or just the name--analysis and such goes into the comments?

by EngineerScotty on Jun 12, 2007 1:03 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The analysis
can come via e-mail too.  I would include them as special interview blurbs.

Horford?

Who kidnapped Billy Knight and replaced him with a competent GM?  The real Billy Knight would take Josh McRoberts at #3--the best player to come out of Duke since...Shelden Williams.

Cry foul, I do!  :)

by EngineerScotty on Jun 12, 2007 1:19 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not McRoberts
and not Horford.  Both are too tall for Billy Knight.  It really should be Julian Wright, at 6'8, the perfect size for the NBA according to Billy.

by howlingfantods on Jun 12, 2007 1:24 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Accidental competence
Although I know my role here is, in part, to guess what the Hawks will actually do, I decided to try to pick someone who would actually fit the team's needs and be an arguable 3rd-quality pick (though there will be disagreement, I'm sure).

Was hard picking between Horford and the Chinese guy.  A lot of mock drafts have Atlanta looking at Yin.  I ended up erring in favor of someone who made a good showing in the NCAA Tourney and would spark some fan enthusiasm.

on Wright. He could be a good fit for Memphis, with the new coach, and their soon to be up-tempo play. I think in 3 years he will really start to blossom into an incredible player. By the time he's 24-25, watch out.

This just in...
We're hearing rumors that the Portland TrailBlazers may have sent Greg Oden, Darius Miles and Dan Dickau to Miami for Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem.  Our Blazer sources claim that nothing has occurred at this time, but won't say whether or not they are in negotiations.

Man...
...you must really like Dan Dickau.

by HarryManback on Jun 12, 2007 2:02 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

According to anonymous sources
close to the negotiation, Blazers' GM Kevin Pritchard asked for Pat Riley's soul to be part of the deal.  The Heat were not willing to make that concession--claiming that his soul had been already sold over twenty-five years ago--but offered the soul of Jason Williams instead.  The Trail Blazers' brain trust is considering that offer.

Just so you know
I'd like to take Al Thornton with the 28th Pick for San Antonio so if no one minds just don't pick him.  Thanks.

Are you sure Ainge isn't simply mulling over my offer of Kwame Brown and Vlad Radmanovic for Paul Peirce, Ryan Gomes and the 5th overall?

You can't teach size, Danny, PULL THE TRIGGER!

Come on

Commissioner Dave (as opposed to Commissioner David) would never allow any trade in which the Lakers get better, to occur.  This league has principles to uphold, after all.

already the draft is
blown up because the hawks loves m.conley.jr not al horford.. real geniuses boy i tell yah !!!

by fatty on Jun 12, 2007 1:50 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's their problem

If the Hawks want to draft Conley at #3, that makes the rest of the lottery that much more valuable.

by EngineerScotty on Jun 12, 2007 1:51 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think the Hawks will definitley take a pg
They simply can't risk it, they need a pg bad. I think Boston will take Yi.

by jayseyfield on Jun 12, 2007 1:55 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Atlanta PG
Unless the Hawks fall in love with Conley, they will go big with the first pick and take whomever is left between Conley & Acie @ #11.

by Jesse07 on Jun 12, 2007 4:50 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe...
They were expecting (as they should be) that Conley will be available at the 11 spot or their real guy is Acie Law, which really screws up my #14 pick for the Clippers...

Danny Ainge should pull the trigger on Spencer Hawes! I can't believe he's still on the board...

by Champs2009 on Jun 12, 2007 1:57 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Uh-oh
Ha! Now we know what the Clippers are after! Anyone that wants Law needs to trade up over the 14th pick.

Unless, that's what you want us to think you're after...

Yeah
I know...but this is kind of built in to using all of us as GMs.  We all have day jobs and such and if DropStepAinge is closing on a huge deal or something he can't drop it to come and pick.  We'll give him a while.

I expected the draft would last a couple days anyway.  We'll just hope this doesn't happen too often.

Taking Yi Jianlian is risky but their fanbase is on the edge of revolting so better go for a HR instead of a base hit.

They're pissed anyway
He might as well go with high risk, high yield player.

by jayseyfield on Jun 12, 2007 5:17 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes, they have a bunch of wings,
but tony allen is coming off a serious knee injury, pierce is aging, wally is always hurt, green is unreliable, gomes plays more PF than SF on such a small team, and allan ray...well, he wasn't taken in a weak draft, so they're not terribly invested in him.  and none of these guys (possibly with the exception of pre-injury tony allen) can play anything near the defense brewer can.  brewer would fit right in the up-tempo offense they've supposedly been trying to implement for two years (though obviously doc's commitment to this is arguable).

chances are one of these guys (probably green or gomes) will be packaged with theo's contract for size/rebounding, which will open up some PT for the rest.

by game sink on Jun 12, 2007 2:57 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not to mention Brewer and/or Green can both play the 2/3, so there will be no problem of them playing together.

Brewer
That is true they have alot, but do you want any of those guys guarding the opposing teams best perimiter guy? paul is tired of chasing people around. Id say tony allen could do it 2 years ago but i dont think so anymore. start brewer and bring wally off the bench. wallys d is so bad eric snow could possibly score a basket or 2 against him.

Ainge is supposed
to have been a Yi fan for awhile.  I believe it was widely thought he may have gone with Yi even if Boston ended up at 3, and I believe Ainge is one of the GMs that went out to the CBA championships a couple of months ago to scout him.

As much as I like to make fun of him too, the guys at celticsblog.com consider Ainge to be a good drafter; and they are not generally Ainge apologists.

(celticsblog.com is having some technical problems, but if you check back later there is a recent post about Ainge's relative strength being the draft)

by matthewcc on Jun 12, 2007 4:13 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah I agree with that
Al Jeff, Rajon Rondo, Delonte West, Gerald Green, all in the teens and twenties, Gomes in the second round.  Ainge may have his faults, but he can definitely spot talent and draft well.

by howlingfantods on Jun 12, 2007 4:23 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why is that?
The draft is Isaiah's strength too, isn't it? Why are these guys terrible GMs in every aspect EXCEPT the draft?

Maybe that's how they've kept their jobs.

by rockingharder on Jun 12, 2007 4:26 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Because talent alone ain't enough.
You have to understand how the pieces fit together. That's why GMs like Buford and Colangelo have been so successful.

I am a HUGE advocate for MN trading KG. I lived in Minneapolis for four years, and I can tell you Minnesotans are not like Los Angelenos. Some might grumble if KG was traded, but they want a winner, not a star. And the Timberwolves aren't going to be able to put together a winner unless they move KG.

by rockingharder on Jun 12, 2007 5:46 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

charlotte
I think they need another big. They already have 3 small forwards, 2 if they let Wallace go which I believe they'll resign him, and they have 2 good pg's. They could also use a shooting guard though, but there's no pure 2 guard available at 8, now, or probably won't be in real life either.

Personally I think they should take Noah. As long as they resign Gerald. If they decide to let GW walk, then I think they need a SF.

I just wanna state
as the Bulls GM of the mock, I am not retarded and actually do know bball, and I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BELIEVE SPENCER HAWES IS A TOP 10 PICK. I think he is a bust waiting to happen. He is about 4-5 years away and should of stayed in school.

That said, I told Dave in an email that whoever was left because Chicago will clearly take one of the bigs, Noah, Hawes, Yi.. whoever falls to them.

I personally feel they will trade the pick for a veteran PF.

I don't think it's that clear
and I don't want to bore Portland fans with Bulls draft insight, but taking the best player regardless of position is probably Paxson's draft philosophy. There's no reason to waste the last high pick the Bulls will have for a long time. I hope the pick gets traded with Duhon, Nocioni, and/or former Blazer and current invisible man Veek-tor.

Al Thornton

" A source close to the team told us that the two players they considered at this spot were either a SF or a PG since they are looking into dealing Artest or Bibby.  They were hoping Jeff Green would fall to this pick.  Since he was gone, the best small forward available on thire board, Thornton, was deemed ready to contribute sooner than Conley, their highest rated point guard."

Putting on my Stephen A. Smith hat...

The Blazers got ROBBED in this trade!  They trade the only 23/10 guy in the NBA for a point guard whose older than Jack Ramsay, and a frigging white guy, and a coupla draft picks!  So what if Zach Randolph holds up the occasional 7-11, he's an All-Star!  Or at least he SHOULD be!  I tell you what, the Blazers will be right back here next year!
Plus, they're probably gonna take another point guard...which gives them 732 of them, and none of them are any good!  Except the old guy!  I don't want to hear about the Trail Blazers any more--so what if they have the current rookie of the year, they simply don't know how to draft!  Plus, they're a small city--far too small for a sophisticated urbane guy like me to care about!  Portland might as well be Salt Lake for all I care!

--Dave

by Dave on Jun 12, 2007 8:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well...

even Stephen A Smith wouldn't badmouth the selection of Greg Oden at #1.  That's a no-brainer, after all--so a no-brain like SAS can understand it.

Boomshakalaka!
"inside sources say the negotiations between the two GMs were protracted and intense."

Mostly because KP wouldn't stop giggling.

I just don't see how anyone could say the Sixers came out on top. They essentially have the team we had this year with Igoudala for Roy.

We upgrade our PG and SF slots PLUS two draft picks while simultaneously getting rid of Randolph and Joel's large contracts?

Either Maurice Cheeks really likes Randolph or Pritchard is in the mob.

"let's keep in mind, with the #37, #42, #52 and #53 picks in the second round, Portland may be able to package those along with their newly acquired #30 pick to move up into the high 20's.

More on that as it develops."

by jayseyfield on Jun 12, 2007 11:06 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmmmm...
I like all but the trading of Joel.  My guess is that might be a deal breaker, but I'd rather have him than Hunter.  Was he bad this year? Absolutely; so bad that you know it was an anomaly.

Furthermore:  At worst, Joel is a quality back-up.  For his price tag, he is a deal.  I have faith in his regaining defensive form.  That will be huge.  He is the type of back-up that championship teams need.

Perhaps this next argument is irrational, but we worked hard on Joel to stay here, and he chose us.  Not only did he choose us, but he did so when we had been horrible, and when everyone knew we would still be bad.  I have a serious problem dumping a guy like that after a fluke year, even though he is nowhere near a core player on this team, and trades happen.  I'd be disappointed if he actually got traded.

If Philly makes the trade with Joel, I don't see why they make it without Joel.  Jack for Miller works for them because a 12-5 guard still yet to peak works for them over a Miller who only has a couple really good years left.  Zach gives them a hard to come by in the East posting/boarding beast.  Long run, it works for Portland, but Philly isn't looking as far ahead, so this works for them, too.

I really don't want to lose Joel.

It's a business
a business of winnning, to be exact, and trades involving those types happen all the time.  That wasn't really a main reason, just having that on top of essentially switching him for Hunter (who looks pretty decent, to be fair) didn't sit well with me.  I dunno, just rubs me the wrong way, in terms of what we're giving up.  Would people do this if the old Joel played last year?  I just don't want to move him (or consider him expendable) if it's solely based on last year.  I really think that was a fluke, but I don't what's going on in his mind/body day to day, so I guess I can;tsay with absolute certainty...

by supremepuntiff on Jun 12, 2007 9:52 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree
that Joel is a semi-valuable piece.  That's why we figured he pretty much had to be thrown in there.  It was more incentive for Philly to do the deal, especially since they threw in Korver who they very definitely did not want to lose.  It's not bad for Joel either, being reunited with Mo Cheeks who got the best out of him.

I want to add
I am very upset we lose Jack. I love that guy. I've been trying to start a keep Jack in red and black slogan, I'm very anti-trading him to replace him with steve blake or a rookie.

I have said though that bringing in a solid pg to replace him, that's different. Andre Miller fits that label to. I like the way Dre plays, and although I would miss Jack big time, I would live with Dre. Especially if we took Conley Jr, that would be interesting.

That said, whoever gets Jack is getting a helluva a basketball player and a great kid.

Welcome Greg Oden

by junit3123 on Jun 12, 2007 11:25 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It buggers credulity
but could our Mock Stephen A. Smith be onto something in denouncing the trade? Is it too much to give up for vet point guard help (which we conceivably could get with Blake via MLE?), especially for such a very-veteran guy who's never been the most athletic?
But if that's where we are, it seems like a choice between investing in depth/future at pg (Conley) or sf (Julian Wright). Tough call in some ways, but Conley duplicates Sergio too much as a small/quick/young pg. And Wright's just too skilled and versatile to pass up at #12.

by hugs on Jun 13, 2007 3:36 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd rather have dre then blake
especially if we have to lose Jack to get 1. Losing Jack for Blake is an awful idea.

Disagree
Blake can do everything Jack can and defend too. We're giving up nothing.

by jamon51 on Jun 13, 2007 9:19 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm pretty sure Conley won't make it this far...
In the real draft.  I chose who I thought was a better player in the long run, but I can see Atlanta taking Conley if he's available.  Which would make Acie Law a potential Blazer with this trade.

But with this trade the Blazers still need SF help and have 3 PG's (Miller, Sergio, and an amalgam of Roy and Dickau) so Wright is right.

Agreed
There are a few reaches here.

Green won't make it up to 7 (he's only worked out with 2 teams and might return to school still).   Thornton is a reach at 10.  I think he could be had at 13-15.  And Acie Law might drop down to the 15-25 range.

I'm drafting for Hornets at 13
I won't be near a computer when my pick comes up, so I emailed Dave a little bit ago with my pick but haven't heard back yet and am worrying that there may be email difficulties like yesterday...

Dave, if you get this, is your email working and did you get my pick?

by goonerluke on Jun 13, 2007 10:31 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On the trade.
Miller, Rodriguez, Dickau, Roy, Jones, Webster, Korver, Aldridge, LaFrentz, Hunter on the roster (that's 10).  Outlaw and Udoka as signable players (that's 12).  #1, #12, #30 (that's 15) and four second round picks (that's 19).  Out of that group the best 3 is still probably Ime Udoka, so we haven't upgraded the 3 significantly.  We have a ton of OK young potential without enough minutes to give them.  If we draft a point guard then either Sergio gets no minutes or the pick gets no minutes.  If we draft a 3 they are competing with about four otyher players for minutes.  This trade accomplishes the opposite of what I think a trade should do, concentrate talent.  This dilutes talent.

by EnglandDan on Jun 13, 2007 10:58 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I totally agree
except that Korver would probably start over Ime. I'd rather pick up Nick Young to back up Roy after Freddy's contract expires.

by Blazerholic on Jun 13, 2007 12:22 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What does Korver do better than Udoka?
He shoots slightly better, he rebounds slightly less per minute, assists not better, and he's not in the same class as a defender.  Korver is also 26 years old, so he's not going to improve dramatically.

by EnglandDan on Jun 13, 2007 12:27 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not saying he's better
I'm just saying he would get the start because he can shoot and politically it would be hard to say we got an aging PG who can't shoot, 2 bench players and a pick for Zach, Jack, and Pryz. That's a steep price.

by Blazerholic on Jun 13, 2007 12:35 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think you have beautifully expressed
why I don't like the trade.

With the 13th selection in the 2007 NBA Draft
The New Orleans Hornets select Nick Young, of USC.

Sorry to go out of order, but I have to leave for a luncheon soon, Dave didn't respond to my email (no worries Dave, I know your busy), J. Wright looks to be OUR pick, and I don't want to leave you guys hanging this afternoon.

My justification: Nick's the best player left on my draft board and the Hornets very much need a SG. He played at a very high level in the PAC 10 and should be playing at a high level for New Orleans soon. With Nick and Chris Paul in the backcourt, New Orleans will have a young, athletic guard duo to build around for the next decade.
