Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Gameday Open Thread: Rockets @ Blazers

Can we shock the world and pull off another upset against a playoff team?  It certainly seems more likely in this game than in either of the last two.  It'll be interesting to see how we deal with the Yao-Tracy problem.

There's room for all your pre-game prognostication, in-game comments, and post-game reflections here.  We'll be here during the game once again so if you're not going, join us!  The season is winding down and you won't have many more chances until next fall.

--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)

Update: Jason Quick is reporting that Ime Udoka is now done for the season because of his right knee. Martell will get the start in his place. --Dave

I really hope we have the Rockets number,
because I'll be at the game I want to see something memorable.  Something I don't expect to see.  "Outlaw dribbles around MacGrady, rises up for the jumper, and dumpsitoff to Jones for the JAM!!!!  That's Travis' team leading 4th assist of the game!!!
I'm the smartest guy I know, just ask me.

How is this game not on local TV? It's the Rockets! Tracy McGrady! T-Mac! Two of the biggest names in the NBA world.

An overtime loss
is what I'm hoping for.

Here we go folks
I'm excited about this game, though I have no idea why.  Maybe it's a Pavlov's Dogs reaction:  see Houston, beat Houston.  Makes you drool.  Anyway, it should be fun as always.

Martell needs to score 30 tonight to make up for T-Mac.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

Nate has
a Blazer-colored tie tonight.  That's a rarity for him.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

Oh no
Zach Zarba is reffing.  Yuck.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:11 PM PDT reply actions

Rockets get the tip
McGrady opens with a miss.

And Matt Bullard just called Ime "I-me" (as in "I-HOP").

Blazers miss.  Yao misses.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:12 PM PDT reply actions

JJ
dribble dribble dribble, he been spending too much time watching sergio's game?

by howlingfantods on Apr 11, 2007 7:12 PM PDT reply actions

Roy turn-around fade away
misses.  Jamaal Magloire picks up a foul on the rebound for about the sixth game in a row.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:13 PM PDT reply actions

Yao misses
and LaFrentz can't grab the rebound.  Rockets ball.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:13 PM PDT reply actions

Good to have you here
Howling.

Now McGrady misses AGAIN!

Jack drives and leaves a teardrop short.  Raef picks up the long rebound.  We get it to Jamaal deep against Yao which is a mistake.  But Yao picks up a foul.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:14 PM PDT reply actions

OOOOOH
Jamaal on the move down the lane gets the ball from Jack and JAMS!  2-0

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:15 PM PDT reply actions

Now Yao a turn around
in the lane deep against Magloire.  Looked like a high schooler against 3rd graders.  2-2

Now RAEF posts up, scores, AND ONE!

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:15 PM PDT reply actions

Webster turns it over!
But the Rockets made like Portland on the break and TOTALLY blew it!  They threw it away!

Now Jack misses and McGrady comes back with a long jumper.  6-4

Roy on automatic with the step-back from the baseline.  That's becoming a signature more.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:17 PM PDT reply actions

McGrady drives
and misses but an easy foul call.  He'll go to the line.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

webster guarding tmac
um, that's a bit of a mismatch....

We're gonna be missing ime something fierce this game.

by howlingfantods on Apr 11, 2007 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

T-Mac hits one of two
Blazers miss, recover, blocked, Rockets recover but again they throw it away!  Still 9-6

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:19 PM PDT reply actions

Yao is disturbing us
with the help defense.  Now we miss and Houston breaks.  Alston with a layup.  11-6 them.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:20 PM PDT reply actions

good learning experience
for Martell, he can't stop him but it would be great if he could just stay in front of him.

The offenses are really ragged
But right now they're keying on Roy and he can't score, which really hurts us.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:22 PM PDT reply actions

Roy up and under
from the free throw line...IN!  11-8

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:22 PM PDT reply actions

Yao inside
so incredibly deep he couldn't help but score.  Mags has to find a way to push him out.  13-8

Jack almost loses it to Alston then forces a three.  Rockets lose the rebound out of bounds.

Sergio soon?

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:23 PM PDT reply actions

Roy to LaFrentz
who misses the layup off the cut!  McGrady helped him miss.  Then he got his own and put it back up only to be blocked by Yao.  The Raef fouls Yao in frustration.

And T-Mac right by Martell for two!  15-8

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:24 PM PDT reply actions

yep
lot cut and paste of that tonight I bet...
"And T-Mac right by Martell for two!"

But I already have "Rockets lay it in" on the clipboard...

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Roy works open
but misses.  Now long outlet pass from McGrady to Alston who beats everybody downcourt and lays it in.  17-8

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:25 PM PDT reply actions

We seem to know
that the season is done.  I don't understand why some of these guys aren't playing harder though.  It's not like they've proved a ton about themselves or the team.  You'd think they'd be busting it to earn or retain a spot.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Jack to LaFrentz
again on the cut.  This time he scores.  17-10

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:25 PM PDT reply actions

Roy fouls Yao
while helping Magloire 15 feet out on the court.  Why foul there?  Why not when Yao is four feet away from the hoop?  Silly.

Timeout.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:26 PM PDT reply actions

Rafer for three
out of the timeout.  20-10.  Youch.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

That tmac move
might be my favorite shot off the dribble.  Just smooooove.

by howlingfantods on Apr 11, 2007 7:30 PM PDT reply actions

Magloire is hacked
on the way to the line.  Free throws.

Hits one. And second! 22-14

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:30 PM PDT reply actions

T-Mac for three
miss.  Mags rebound.

Magloire travels across the lane but still misses.

Now Rockets to Rafer for a quick three!  25-14

Matt bullard

by howlingfantods on Apr 11, 2007 7:31 PM PDT reply actions

Sergio got free
at the top of the three point arc about six times but wouldn't shoot on any of them, even after receiving it back from Fred Jones.  He ended up turning it over off the dribble.

And the Rockets score.

Roy to the cup but misses.

Schenscher fouls.  Rockets free throws.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:32 PM PDT reply actions

Head hits one of two
28-14  We got doubled up in the first

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:33 PM PDT reply actions

Roy tries the up and under

Wow...Martell gets stripped.  Portland recovers and Jones scores.  Webster couldn't look any worse if his head fell off.

Now T-Mac scores on Outlaw.  30-18

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 7:36 PM PDT reply actions

Jones down the lane
for a sweeping swooper.  30-20.  The Rockets have way more energy than we do though.

Jones is back in and drives!  Just missed the layup!  He's about the only guy with full energy out there.

Yao running hook misses.

Rockets three second violation
But Jones immediately misses.

McGrady miss in the lane.

Jones drives to Dan in the corner.  Won't take the three.

Dan drives, out to Jones, who drives, back to Dan in the corner, who drives and gets it to Mags who misses but is fouled.  Weird sequence.

Carry call
on Hayes for Houston!  WHOOOO!

1:40 left and an 8-point deficit though.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 9:15 PM PDT reply actions

It was a bad one too
He was three feet away from Magloire in traffic in the lane and tried to pass to him.  There were at least three problems there:

  1.  Too close to the intended recipient

  2.  Way too many people in the way

  3.  It's Magloire so even had the pass gotten through he likely would have dropped it anyway.  He certainly would have been covered.

by Dave on Apr 11, 2007 9:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Jones drives
passes it out to Outlaw who drives and passes it RIGHT TO YAO.  Ugh.
