Game 31 Preview: Blazers at Jazz

A Look at the Jazz

The Jazz are on a disastrous 4-11 run in the month of December.  What has gone wrong?  Part of it has been a brutal schedule.  7 of their 14 games this month have been against upper-echelon teams.  Also their Big Three have been underperforming.  Carlos Boozer has been the steadiest but he's slightly off of his scoring average.  Deron Williams more so, plus he's turning the ball over a ton.  Mehmet Okur has been out half the month with a shoulder injury and hasn't contributed much when he's played.  When those three aren't clicking Utah has a hard time staying on an even keel.  Worse, they've been giving up a substantial number of points:  117 to Sacramento, 125 to Dallas, 116 to Atlanta, 123 to the L*kers, all this month.  Their defense has allowed an average of 109.3 ppg this month.  They're a good offensive team but not that good.  They're not getting back in transition and they're not getting out to guard the perimeter most nights.

Nevertheless this is not the end of the Jazz.  Their schedule gets exponentially easier the next two months.  Plus they still do a ton of things well.  Carlos Boozer is a fantastic rebounder and scorer.  Deron Williams is still shooting 50% and averaging 9 assists per game.  The Jazz smash their opponents in rebounds, assists, steals and forced turnovers, and especially shooting percentage.  They haven't forgotten how and where to score.  You can get easy shots on them, but they'll get easy shots on you too.

The Jazz know this game means something to them.  After Portland's 13-1 month and leapfrogging them in the standings Utah will want to send a message.  We're likely to see a motivated club tonight.

What I'd Like To See

  1.  We cannot come out flat like we have been the last few games.  During the heart of the winning streak we were jumping on opponents early.  Lately we've been flat and depended on fourth-quarter heroics to pull us through.  Fourth-quarter heroics don't happen nearly as often on the road, though.  We better come with intensity from the get-go.
  2.  A large part of our dominance has been doubling up people in free throw attempts.  We need to be aggressive getting to the rim tonight.  The long shot will always be there but it will be hard to win with bombs alone.  We need some infantry work too.
  3.  We need Lamarcus Aldridge to come through with a big game.  We can't depend on Channing or Joel to stop Boozer.  Lamarcus can't really stop him either but at least he can score with him.
  4.  Our White Unit has to dominate their bench.  Scoring-wise that's certainly possible but we also need some toughness and attitude from the second unit.  They have a lot of energy players.  We can't get outworked or bullied around and expect to win.
  5.  Utah will pick your pockets until they hit lint...and then some.  Taking care of the ball is the one thing that has sustained us so far.  We need to do it again tonight.
As the old saying goes, today is the first day of the rest of our lives.  Time to find out what that's going to look like.

P.S.  Believe it or not I have to work this evening...as in all night.  The game recap and final jersey scores will probably not come until Tuesday morning.

P.P.S. Ben has heroically volunteered to step in with a recap this evening in my absence, so watch for that!

Blazers Frontline
I think that in order to beat the Jazz AGAIN, not only will LaMarcus have to step up as Dave mentions but also Joel....if we could get 10 and 10 out of him with a couple blocks and an inside presence that would go a long way toward getting us to win no. 14 in a row.....and somebody will have to step up from the perimeter but we seem to always have somebody ready to do that every night whether it be Jones or Blake or Webster or Roy or......the list goes on.

We need to keep
them off the offensive boards, especially Millsap, who usually plays well against us.

Just coming off an emotional win,
-playing a back to back, probably litle sleep, makes the recipe for a "D" game for 3 quarters anyway. The question is, will we hang-around close enough to step it up a notch in time?...BIGGER question, will they know this?? IMHO, this game will tell me everything I need to know about our future. A Win, will show maturity only great veteran teams possess. Of course, an L only shows they will learn later. Pre-game gearing-up, is what it's all about. And NOTHING is harder than maintaining a win streak EXCEPT, maintaining it under these conditions...GO BLAZERS!!!!!!

This is really
a no-lose game for the Blazers.  Anyone who would be upset over a loss tonight is either a complete ingrate or has a screw loose.  On the other hand if they won, it would be fantastic.

Yeah
I normally would blame Nate for a loss and he's not going to be there.  In a way, it makes it easier to blame him for thinking his wife and family are more important than the streak.  I don't know if that sort of selfish leadership fits well with the Blazer's new culture.

I'll take a wait and see approach.  I honestly do not see a game on the schedule where the Blazers should lose.  A team might steal one or two games from the Blazers, but the streak shouldn't end until it's up in the 30's or 40's.

You are joking right?
About Nate?

Yeah
I can't fault the guy for going to a funeral.  I'd like too, but I just cannot.  I love funerals, they get you out of work and you can catch up with friends and family.  The only bad part is that it takes a death to get everyone together.

Of course not
Who could fault him for going to a funeral?

The real problem is that he has a family.  No sense of priority.  I mean, in three years, this is the second game he's missed.  How many normal guys miss two days of work in three years?  This guy's a slacker.

He always gets the summer off too
Maybe he purposely misses the playoffs just to start his summer vacation sooner.

The best part--
If we lose, it was a great run and we got the T-Wolves up next to get "back on track" (that first win after the end of the streak will be big for continued confidence, I bet).  Then they'll be able to move past the streak, and concentrate on keeping their good play up for the rest of the season.

And if they WIN, well, then we are amazing.

AND we'll still have the Wolves up next to get eaten up for #15, and then a big franchise-win-streak-tying possible #16 game against the Bulls on TNT.

Like Dave says, we can't lose.

I predict LMA is sick of not playing in the 4th and will come out BIG this road trip-- ESPECIALLY against the Bulls on national TV.  You know the broadcast will keep pointing out how the Bulls passed him up and all, so it'll be nice if LMA helps the storyline by tearing them up.

6 games above .500... insane.

Yes,

-we've already succeeded beyond all expectations.
But all look to see the the next level.

by edgeguy42 on Dec 31, 2007 1:15 PM PST   0 recs

But at what cost?
Not too long ago there were lots of diaries about high draft picks and can't wait until next year.  Are the Blazers selling out their future for some win streak glory in the present?

Winning
builds character.. why do we need another top 10 pick? Roy, Aldridge, Oden.. those are our stars... We can get a quality player in the 20's.

I used to think that way
The way I see things now is that the Blazers will not get a lottery pick and if they would like to get into the lottery, they will have to trade one or more of the valuable players who are currently on the roster.

I believe it would be better for the team to lose the rest of the games this season, draft the player of their choosing and buy-out or cut one of the current players.  Actually, cut or buy-out two since Rudy will be there next year.

The sensible person would say that packaging two Blazers and the low draft pick for a higher pick would be more economical.  Well I say poppycock!  The Blazers do not want to be at the mercy of another team that might demand an asset that KP is unwilling to part with.  If the Blazers lose out, they will be in the drivers seat and they can draft and cut anyone they want.

I hope I understand

-but if you mean those who had hoped this to be a losing season for a better draft pick with what we've already got coming here next year? What can we say? Ok, DON'T enjoy these wins!!! Yip, lets curse the Blazers success be sure we moveup 3 draft positions!!

by edgeguy42 on Dec 31, 2007 1:54 PM PST   0 recs

Exactly!
I was told not go get too upset about all the losses, and just learn to accept them.  Now that the Blazers have run off a winning streak, shouldn't I be upset about the wins?

One more reason
to hope Nate gets fired.  Too many wins.
