Game 27 Preview: Nuggets at Blazers

We just played the Nuggets so I won't do a full preview again.  I'll just hit the high spots:

--The toughest thing about playing the Nuggets is the matchup problems.  Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony are pretty much built to exploit our weak points.  Chances of containing both of them are almost nil and either one of them uncontained can do a lot of damage.  Anthony has a nasty habit of drifting through games that he should dominate, which is our best hope.  Don't sleep on Marcus Camby either.  His jumper is usually a thorn in our side, plus he's quick and a very good rebounder.

--The Nuggets are a physical team and seem to really crank it up when they see us, possibly because they perceive us as week.  We need to correct that impression quickly.

--Their defense is all about forcing turnovers.  They also commit a ton of them themselves.  A chaotic game is to their advantage.

The keys to the game are simple and direct:

--Do not allow them fast break points.

--We need to stay close in points in the paint.

--We also need to stay close in free throw attempts.  Winning that battle would be even better.

--Other than Camby they aren't a great offensive rebounding team.  Don't make them into one.

--Take care of the ball, play your smart offense, rotate well in the zone, and keep your heads.  Their big advantage comes when you're discombobulated.

We did beat them in Denver, of course, and theoretically a home victory should be easier, especially on the free throw front.  On the flip side everybody but Iverson played lethargically when we faced them and we still needed one of the more incredible shooting displays in recent memory to pull it off.  We can't get away with throwing up so many jumpers against them and expect those results to hold.  It would be inaccurate to say we should expect a win but given the current circumstances I don't think anyone would be surprised by a win either.  This is the toughest game of the current lengthy homestand.  If we win it...wow, the streak possibilities boggle the mind.  If we lose it we've just mirrored our 9 of 10 losing streak with a 9 of 10 winning streak, which is more than anyone could have reasonably expected.

Key to this one is simple.
MAKE SHOTS.

Now, to increase our chances of that, we should look to get high percentage whenever possible.

At the same time, if we want to stand a chance in this one, somebody is going to need to be able to step it up from outside.

Who will it be tonight? Martell? Jones? Jack? Blake? Roy? Travis?

Regardless of the outcome,
Houston has helped us by taking Denver to two overtimes in a hard fought game.  Lets hope it goes to three.

It can't hurt our chances
that Denver will be playing the second game of a back-to-back. And the first game of that back-to-back is an epic battle with the Rockets, stretching into two overtimes. Do ya think the Nuggs might be tired?

By the way, the score of the Rockets-Nuggs game is 110-109 Nuggs, with 20 seconds left in the second OT. Heckuva game folks.

Nature bats last.

Even more
no matter what the outcome of the Denver-Houston game (of dubious import probably) how does it feel to actually be watching other teams' games with interest, knowing that it matters in some way to the Blazers?  It's been a while since we've been able to do that.

Awesome!
I was just thinking that earlier tonight.  All of the sudden, the rest of the league becomes much more relevant.  The ability to enjoy proxy battles is one of the gifts of superpower.

On a side note to that...
...during the game, Doug Collins mentioned that the Rockets had studied the way the Blazers zone had been effective against the Rockets in their recent win in Denver. Rick Adelman said it showed him ways to try to exploit Denver, and that Houston would likely employ some zone against Denver.

How about that?! Other teams (good teams, even) studying our game film in order to find ways to play better?

Er...
...that should be Nuggets, not Rockets.

I'm tired. Must. Sleep. Now.

Also
Canby had one heck of a fall last night.  It was so loud they kept playing it over and over again and they had to have an injury time out for it.  He came back, but things like that always hurt worse the next game.

Also, I thought Aaron Brooks gave Houston some good minutes last night.  It was nice to see him out there.

50+ minutes
Tired? Both A.I. and C.A. played more than 50 minutes last night. Yeah, they might be tired.

Flip the Switch!
Dont forget to yell this as loudly and frequently as possible at the game tomorrow, even if it makes no sense at all. Just yell it for funsies.

by jonestr on Dec 20, 2007 11:15 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I hope
I hope the team breaks out a huge switch and physically flips it during the eventual 4th quarter push!

The bad guys will take one look at the huge switch, see it flipped, and pooh themselves.

Oden can come out to halfcourt with a megaphone and yell to the crowd: "Are we gonna flip it?  Are we gonna flip it?!"

FLIP THE SWITCH!  FLIP THE SWITCH!

The one downfall of this streak
Is that I've avoided getting my Christmas shopping done on count of I haven't left my computer/swivel chair in a week, I've just been watching basketball, reading Blazers news and eating chips.

For the sake of my ass getting whooped... Maybe a loss wouldn't be such a bad thing? lol

I've been really bad.
I called in sick and I'm not sorry. Hehe.

I so hear you on that...
...but still wouldn't change anything. The steak was killing me since it was finals week. Naturally, even with DVR, rather than recording games and watching them after my assignments were done, I HAD to watch them live at all cost. And then read all the Blazersedge dialogue to go with it (which is killing me 'cuz the dialogue never stops!.

But life is good. Finals are over, Blazers are still winning, and the League is noticing. (BTW - this has to be the most dramatic turnaround in the history of the league, not so much with respect to wins and losses, but just overall team aura. It's unbelievable how recent it was that the Blazers were utterly despised and frankly worthy to be so.)

When feeling discouraged about the Blazers' learning process, just remember that at least the Jail Blazer era is over.

I have a feeling that...
Camby will not be as effective. I saw signs of a back injury last night. He was wincing pretty bad after that fall.

Jazz meltdown.....
Blazer Nation.....Anybody in need of a great holiday feel-good story should check out the soap-opra events happening with the Jazz. This stew has been simmering on low heat for some time now, but Chef Jerry Slone has had enough! Great stuff!

What Defense?
The Blazers have used the 2-3 zone effectively at times throughout this winning streak....but they came out in a man-to-man vs. Toronto and it didn't matter anyway because they torched us from outside in the first half.

Any ideas on what strategy they'll use tonight? I think they might start out in a man, and if A.I. and Melo kill us off the dribble we can switch to a zone.....particularly in the second half when the Nuggets will be tired their jump shots will start falling short......

K-Mart
Any idea if K-Mart and Camby are playing tonight?  K-Mart always kills us.
