Gameday Open Thread and Blazersedge Night!

The day is finally here!  Whether you're sitting with the Blazersedgers tonight or not make sure you wear your B.E. t-shirt to the Garden tonight and cheer like crazy when the name gets flashed on the big sign!

Obviously I won't be chatting in the Gameday Thread tonight but you can!  Register all of your pre-, in-, and post-game commments here!  I do have internet access after the game so watch for the usual recap and the preview of Saturday's game.  You can find the Jersey Contest entry for Dallas below.  (There's none for tonight's game.)

Also don't forget to come to Wordstock at the Oregon Convention Center at 1:00 on Sunday if you want to hear a panel presentation and essay including some of your favorite Blazer writers and a rep from the team.

See you in Portland!

I Wish
I could be there with you folks.  I'll send you some positive energy with the spirit of aloha.

I watched the GS/Dallas game last night and at one point it was not looking good for the Blazers.  GS was kicking butt and taking names.  I figured if Dallas lost that game, then the Blazers would have felt their wrath.  Now I am hoping for a Dallas let up since they got over their mini-Golden State-hump.

Go Blazers.

Oh snap
Disregard that, I know they play Memphis tonight.  I still mean all that regarding the Dallas game, just not in this thread.  I haven't had my caffeine yet.

Go 'Zers
I expect nothing less than a win on BlazersEdge night.  If the Blazers lose, I'm blaming it on Dave not being loud enough.

Wish I could be there.  Have fun guys.

Go Blazers
I'll be seeing them personally next Saturday in DC.  Until then, it's watching them via open threads and ESPN highlights.

checking in from 3 shades of blue blog
the game is still 7 hours away, but i'm already pumped....

guys, how has Frye looked this year?

i'd also love to know who you guys think is the best PG....or should i say, who should be the starting PG...

we have a similar situation here with 3 quality PG's competing for minutes...

personally, I think Kyle Lowry has done enough to be the starter and get 30+ minutes a night, but Coach Iavaroni likes him coming off the bench instead....

re: memphis blog
hey zach, it's really cool to see you on here. i'm just one fan, so maybe some of the edgers will weigh in, but here's my response to your two questions.

  1. frye has not looked very good this season. we did not expect great defense from him, and our expectations have met. he has frequently been in foul trouble. in our last game (vs NO) he was completely eaten up by david west. unfortunately, we haven't seen the offense out of him that we were also expecting. i would give him a very poor grade so far, but it's early in the season and he is still adjusting. i think he will start hitting his outside jumper and will be a regular positive contributor within a couple months. frye is only starting because the second unit could stop absolutely with frye playing center, so coach mcmillan basically switched frye and pryzbilla's playing rotation.

  2. none of our PG's have looked good this season, save for the latest game against NO. mcmillan also switched the blake/jack rotation, with blake getting the start and jack coming off the bench. this seemed to work better for both players. blake did a great job finding open shooters (especially martell!) during the game, and had 9 ast with 0 turns. jack came into the game with the second unit and looked more to score than dish out the ball, which also suits him. he scored 20 after looking dreadful/awful/terrible in the first three games. that was great for his confidence. i also want to note that i thought blake did a good job guarding cp3. after seeing jack struggle in our first match up this season, and seeing cp3 rip the lakers a new one earlier in the week, it was great to see blake able to stay in front of paul for the most part.

can you talk a little bit more about the PG situation over there in memphis? damon's starting i see, but who else is challenging him? why do you  think lowry should be starting?
I haven't slept for ten days because that would be too long.

by abetterbomb on Nov 9, 2007 3:30 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

hey Zach
I agree with the poster above regarding Frye.  He's not given the team the shooting touch that we expected, but I think he will eventually settle into a contributing role, and be somewhere in between the player he was as a rookie, and the stiff he was last year in NY.

Regarding the Memphis PG situation, I haven't seen enough of the Grizz to comment intelligently, but I'm always going to support my fellow Wilson High School graduate Damon Stoudamire.

Regarding the Blazer PG situation, Steve Blake will continue to be the starter for the forseeable future with Sergio Rodriguez as the energy guy off the bench and Jarrett Jack moving into a new role as a reserve combo guard.  Brandon Roy is the ball handler down the stretch of games with someone like Blake or Jack playing off the ball at the other guard spot.

Thanks for stoppin by...
In regards to your Q's:

I think Frye has been lost on his defensive rotations and this has led him to not being confident on the offensive end.  I think tonight will be a boost of confidence for him because of the Darko match-up.  He should be able to body him up and feel good about his effort.  This will hopefully lead to a more productive offensive effort as well.  He will eventually figure out Mac-10's defense and settle down for the long haul, and tonight should be the starting point for that.

Our point guard play has been tumultuous to say the least.  As the other responders to your questions have said Blake has been our most outstanding mediocre point guard, while I like Stevie, he is just not a starting point guard without the like of 'Melo and AI to pass to.  That said, the Jack off the bench situation is the best thing for the tempo of our rotation.  Look for Sergio to play a big role tonight when we finally get into the groove of our new run-and-gun offense.

In any case it should be a competitive game between two young teams with a bevy of unproven talent...may the best youngsters win!

by GimmeIme on Nov 9, 2007 6:17 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Is it sad to say this is a must win?
Ok, i'm a little dramatic but as a blazer fan it should be a requirement.  Tonight's game is what we could call a "should win".  If we can't win this game then it goes a long way in defining where we will end up this year.  I personally am pulling for this year's team to put it together and push for that 8th playoff spot.  If we can't win a game like this then i have to believe that i may be living a pipe dream and should just get ready for the draft again...  That being said, I will be there losing my voice as usual.  I apologize for those sitting in front of me, I'll keep it clean tonight, I promise.  Time to look at the matchups...

PG:  Damon v Blake/Jack - Even?  I'm just hoping that Damon doesn't blow out his knee again, that was horrible to watch...

SG:  Gay v Roy - Advantage Roy.  No question here, as much as national media wanted to toute this matchup, Roy is by far the more complete player.

SF:  Miller v Martell - Advantage Miller.  As much as I think Martell has been hands down the best story of the year so far, Miller has a tendency to have big games against us.  Plus, its only 4 games into the season and I'm still a little on the fence in regards to Martell bringing it every night.  If he blows up for 20+ again then i'll start giving 'Tell a little more love.

PF:  Gasol v LMA - So far this season, the big spaniard has had a tough time.  I think that LMA comes out hard and fast due to the jobbing he got on Wednesday by the Refs.  I'll call this one even for now and hope that LMA gets the better end of it tonight.

C:  Milicic v Frye - This should be joel but this matchup actually works in Frye's favor.  I think the front court matchups of Gasol / Milicic versus Joel/Frye/LMA will be huge in determining who wins this game.  We need to rebound well and keep their bigs from getting second chances for the shooters (Gay/Miller).  Here's to our bigs playing within the rules (hear me LMA?) and winning this game for us.

Blazers:  105
Memphis:  102

Naw
Nothing this year is a "must win." Next year is a different story. Keep your expectations at the 30-35 win level and see what happens. Enjoy it!

As those of us who watched Damon for years...
...remember, Blake and Aldridge could be the key to the game.  Damon has always had trouble making an entry pass into the low post.  To get around this, coaches would often bring the big guy up into the high post.  With Sabonis or Wallace, this was fine - both were good targets, good passers, and could hit mid-range jumpers (semi-jumpers in Sabonis' case).  But, if the entry pass was effectively denied, Damon tends to reverse his dribble and starts driving into traffic.  Sometimes he'll chew up most of the shot clock trying to reset the offense.

The difference in Damon's game has always been his jumper.  If it's falling, the defender has to stay up on him, and Damon can generate good passing angles.  If his jumper is off, the defender can sag back and watch Damon dig his team into a shot clock hole.

My two-bit prediction: if Blake and LMA are able to thwart Damon's entry passes, Memphis will shoot themselves out of the game.  If Damon quickly and consistently gets the ball into Pau, it'll be a tough night for the red and black.
