Gameday Open Thread and Blazersedge Night!
The day is finally here! Whether you're sitting with the Blazersedgers tonight or not make sure you wear your B.E. t-shirt to the Garden tonight and cheer like crazy when the name gets flashed on the big sign!
Obviously I won't be chatting in the Gameday Thread tonight but you can! Register all of your pre-, in-, and post-game commments here! I do have internet access after the game so watch for the usual recap and the preview of Saturday's game. You can find the Jersey Contest entry for Dallas below. (There's none for tonight's game.)
Also don't forget to come to Wordstock at the Oregon Convention Center at 1:00 on Sunday if you want to hear a panel presentation and essay including some of your favorite Blazer writers and a rep from the team.
See you in Portland!

I Wish
I watched the GS/Dallas game last night and at one point it was not looking good for the Blazers. GS was kicking butt and taking names. I figured if Dallas lost that game, then the Blazers would have felt their wrath. Now I am hoping for a Dallas let up since they got over their mini-Golden State-hump.
Go Blazers.
Oh snap
haha
Exactly
Go 'Zers
Wish I could be there. Have fun guys.
Go Blazers
checking in from 3 shades of blue blog
guys, how has Frye looked this year?
i'd also love to know who you guys think is the best PG....or should i say, who should be the starting PG...
we have a similar situation here with 3 quality PG's competing for minutes...
personally, I think Kyle Lowry has done enough to be the starter and get 30+ minutes a night, but Coach Iavaroni likes him coming off the bench instead....

re: memphis blog
- frye has not looked very good this season. we did not expect great defense from him, and our expectations have met. he has frequently been in foul trouble. in our last game (vs NO) he was completely eaten up by david west. unfortunately, we haven't seen the offense out of him that we were also expecting. i would give him a very poor grade so far, but it's early in the season and he is still adjusting. i think he will start hitting his outside jumper and will be a regular positive contributor within a couple months. frye is only starting because the second unit could stop absolutely with frye playing center, so coach mcmillan basically switched frye and pryzbilla's playing rotation.
- none of our PG's have looked good this season, save for the latest game against NO. mcmillan also switched the blake/jack rotation, with blake getting the start and jack coming off the bench. this seemed to work better for both players. blake did a great job finding open shooters (especially martell!) during the game, and had 9 ast with 0 turns. jack came into the game with the second unit and looked more to score than dish out the ball, which also suits him. he scored 20 after looking dreadful/awful/terrible in the first three games. that was great for his confidence. i also want to note that i thought blake did a good job guarding cp3. after seeing jack struggle in our first match up this season, and seeing cp3 rip the lakers a new one earlier in the week, it was great to see blake able to stay in front of paul for the most part.
hey Zach
Regarding the Memphis PG situation, I haven't seen enough of the Grizz to comment intelligently, but I'm always going to support my fellow Wilson High School graduate Damon Stoudamire.
Regarding the Blazer PG situation, Steve Blake will continue to be the starter for the forseeable future with Sergio Rodriguez as the energy guy off the bench and Jarrett Jack moving into a new role as a reserve combo guard. Brandon Roy is the ball handler down the stretch of games with someone like Blake or Jack playing off the ball at the other guard spot.
Thanks for stoppin by...
I think Frye has been lost on his defensive rotations and this has led him to not being confident on the offensive end. I think tonight will be a boost of confidence for him because of the Darko match-up. He should be able to body him up and feel good about his effort. This will hopefully lead to a more productive offensive effort as well. He will eventually figure out Mac-10's defense and settle down for the long haul, and tonight should be the starting point for that.
Our point guard play has been tumultuous to say the least. As the other responders to your questions have said Blake has been our most outstanding mediocre point guard, while I like Stevie, he is just not a starting point guard without the like of 'Melo and AI to pass to. That said, the Jack off the bench situation is the best thing for the tempo of our rotation. Look for Sergio to play a big role tonight when we finally get into the groove of our new run-and-gun offense.
In any case it should be a competitive game between two young teams with a bevy of unproven talent...may the best youngsters win!

Is it sad to say this is a must win?
PG: Damon v Blake/Jack - Even? I'm just hoping that Damon doesn't blow out his knee again, that was horrible to watch...
SG: Gay v Roy - Advantage Roy. No question here, as much as national media wanted to toute this matchup, Roy is by far the more complete player.
SF: Miller v Martell - Advantage Miller. As much as I think Martell has been hands down the best story of the year so far, Miller has a tendency to have big games against us. Plus, its only 4 games into the season and I'm still a little on the fence in regards to Martell bringing it every night. If he blows up for 20+ again then i'll start giving 'Tell a little more love.
PF: Gasol v LMA - So far this season, the big spaniard has had a tough time. I think that LMA comes out hard and fast due to the jobbing he got on Wednesday by the Refs. I'll call this one even for now and hope that LMA gets the better end of it tonight.
C: Milicic v Frye - This should be joel but this matchup actually works in Frye's favor. I think the front court matchups of Gasol / Milicic versus Joel/Frye/LMA will be huge in determining who wins this game. We need to rebound well and keep their bigs from getting second chances for the shooters (Gay/Miller). Here's to our bigs playing within the rules (hear me LMA?) and winning this game for us.
Blazers: 105
Memphis: 102

Naw
As those of us who watched Damon for years...
The difference in Damon's game has always been his jumper. If it's falling, the defender has to stay up on him, and Damon can generate good passing angles. If his jumper is off, the defender can sag back and watch Damon dig his team into a shot clock hole.
My two-bit prediction: if Blake and LMA are able to thwart Damon's entry passes, Memphis will shoot themselves out of the game. If Damon quickly and consistently gets the ball into Pau, it'll be a tough night for the red and black.
Hey all headed to the Rose Garden shortly

How many jump shots are we going to shoot?
I don't get it...
I sort of expected
If they came out with real intensity they might have convinced me that they have a shot this year, but they're acting like a typical young team right now.
Outlaw needs to get to the hoop
We must be content
We need to channel our BlazersEdge boys at the game and get them to pump up the crowd a little more...it seems lifeless in there...but nothing to cheer about so far....

All he needs to say is
checking in from memphis
crazy officiating.
this is the best I've seen Pau this year.
prz only has 2 blocks in the stats, but he has challenged a lot more than that.
So guys, what do you think of our PG's? Lowry has shown a little bit of why I like him the best (a crazy stat, he has the most free throw attempts per minute in the NBA)...
by Zack on Nov 9, 2007 8:19 PM PST reply actions
you guys look good
i'm surprised we are playing so well
i like the 2 PG look with Sergio and Jack when Roy is on the bench...
i love the quickness of lowry and conly. they just need to learn to finish better when going at mach 1. neither has shown to make shots in the lane consistently.
ps - thanks for stealing our draft pick!
by Zack on Nov 9, 2007 8:28 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, the zebras are bugging everyone...
If Joel wasn't out there, this game would already be over.
I'm surprised to see how much your "baby PG's" are playing - when I checked in on Memphis a week ago, Damon was hitting on all cylinders, and I figured he'd continue to get the bulk of the minutes.
To be honest, our crummy perimeter defense makes everyone's guards look pretty good!
So far, the big concern for us is the lack of B-Roy. Fortunately, he tends to pick it up in the 4th quarter pretty consistently.
Nate is pretty good about making adjustments at the half. This could get interesting really quickly... Memphis can shoot both teams back into a game pretty quickly!
-t
Roy
I felt that way before the year started and I feel even stronger about it now.
What's more: he could end up being our 3rd leading scorer due to brilliant and consistent shooting by Martell Webster.
I'm not saying that will happen, but at this point it wouldn't surprise me.
That wouldn't surprise me.
more from memphis
we gave up a protected first rounder for Juan Carlos Navarro and so far he has been horrible in the regular season....had he not been so bad so far, lowry and conly probably wouldn't have played together this game...

Milicic coughs it up, out of bounds
damon
though some are of the opinion that he should start for about 2 months and then get traded....
but regardless of who is starting, most fans feel that Lowry should get a majority of the minutes with conley being groomed to start later in the season....

interesting
Was there any talk about shipping Damon to the Celtics? He seems like a good fit there as he is more of a scoring guard.

could you explain that?
If anyone thank Danny Ainge. I know I am.
to be fair
I fully expected the stache to really surprise people this year and was going to snag him in the fantasy draft at a low pick. Then he busted his leg.
I've been right about Gay so far. I just with I could have snagged him in the blazers edge league too.
I can't wait till i have a healthy and nonsuspended roster!!! all my leagues have 2-3 people not playing. It's killing me.
Gettin' hot and heavy under the hoop!
ALDRIDGE!!!!
86 to 84 US!
Roy taking it right into Gay!
Aldridge gets the hustle points
3 chances on one possession
Jack for 3!!!

Blazers up by 4!!

draft class of last year
31 for Gay
14 for Lowry
22 for Roy
30 for Aldridge
Sergio chipping in with 2!
Magnificent 2nd half by Roy, Aldridge and don't forget Jarrett Jack. Another good game from Webster, with contributions from Joel and Outlaw to boot! Great team 2nd half effort.
Jack can be money when he gets a full head
LMA wrestles down the board and picks up the call, 2 more from the line
108 to 98, Portland!
Jack picks up the rebound, get fouled
that's what laptops are for

Blazers win!! Blazers win!!
Great second half!

Awful statline from Joel but he kept us in the game in the first half.
Some key hustle plays by Outlaw.
