Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Camp Day Two Stories

There's so much Blazer junk on OregonLive's Blazer page that I'm not even going to single stuff out.  I'm just linking you to the whole kit-'n-kaboodle.  You can access the daily articles, Casey Holdahl's blog, and Quick and Freeman Behind the Blazers Beat from there.  Oh, well, except Joe Freeman did this nice article on Channing Frye that, in true pre-season fashion, will make you feel all warm and snuggly.  Apparently Channing gets mistaken for Lamarcus in public every day.  I don't see how people can make that mistake.  Channing is 6'10+1/2" tall while Lamarcus is clearly 6'10+3/4".  Come on folks.

Mike Barrett gives us the usual inside scoop on the Roy situation.  Excellent perspective as always.

The Columbian's Brian Hendrickson has an article on the opening of training camp.  Also good stuff.

Let's see, that's five separate sources of Blazer news that get updated regularly, plus the Tribune twice a week makes six.  And that's just primary sources, not counting places like Truehoop and here.  Do you think you have enough coverage of this team?  I doubt the New York/New Jersey teams have more.  I know the L.A. teams don't.  Lucky ducks you.

Barrett omission
I notice Barrett left out the fact that Roy had trouble with the heel during his offseason workouts in Seattle.  That's an important omission. If yesterday had truly been Roy's first problem with the talus bone since early last season, this wouldn't be a major concern.  But that's not the case.

It seems clear to me that--at best--Roy's practice time and game minutes will have to be monitored carefully for the rest of his career.  That is, unless he has the surgery. And that's clearly a risky proposition or else it would have happened this offseason.

Agreed
I made the comment last year that we should have just done it and gotten it over with and that it would be faster than waiting.

I was right but...

It sounds like part of the concern is they'll need to cut away some muscle to get to the bone. There may be some concern as to how that will effect Roy and maybe that's why they haven't done it yet.

I think it's the route we'll need to go though

Frye
is really starting to become one of my favorites on this team. He isnt dying to get into the spotlight, but when the cameras are on him, he sure knows what to say.

I am very glad we picked up the Buffet of Goodness.

HA!
I loved his comment too!!!

I was thinking about snagging it for my tagline but you beat me to it!

Mine works too.  durant's tag, but very fitting for out team as well.

Here's a clip for those who didn't read the article:

"I think New York is for a lot of people, but I just don't think it was for me right now," Frye said. "For me and my style, I'm more of a laid back guy who just wants to go hoop. New York was too busy, with so many things going on. And out here what's going on really? OK, it's going to rain tomorrow.

"And there is going to be a Greenpeace meeting and hippies are going to be protesting," Frye said with a laugh. "I love being out here. Everybody's chill and everything's cool. It's great."

Frye said he loves the energy and promise of the rebuilding organization. He loves the youth and versatility of the roster. But most of all, Frye says, he loves the city. "

We'll see how Frye plays (I think he'll do VERY well), but ignoring the play... the guy seems like a very cool frood.

Yeah it's funny because like everyone
I have my additional untouchables after Oden, Roy and Aldridge. I tend to include Frye in that category. I think we should only consider trading him in some sort of blockbuster. Even then I would hesitate because I think this guy has a bright future. I love the long term front court tandem of Aldridge, Oden and Frye. Someone else I have a feeling is going to be really good is Green. I just can't shake that feeling.

I have the same feeling about Green
I have had that feeling since I heard we got him in the draft.

Right now my untouchable list is Aldridge, Roy, Oden, and Frye. The rest of the team I have openings in my heart for them as well... but not as concrete as those 4.

Why cant the season start. I cant wait to see LMA and Frye on the court at the same time. Almost as much as I cant wait to see my top 4 on the court at the same time.

Untouchables
I like Frye's personality a lot and I hope his play keeps him a fan favorite, but if he plays TOO well I don't see how we can keep him.  He does love Portland a lot supposedly, and that could go a long way to re-signing him when his rookie contract is up, but if he plays real well and improves like most predict then his next contract will have to be a biggish one... there are hardly any decent big men these days, and if Chris Kaman is making 10 million a year then a solid big like Frye will make around that much as well.  I want to keep him (provided he IS good, of course), but with Aldridge and Oden tattooed in at the starting 4 and 5, and with Frye likely being good enough to be a starter on most teams, we might have to trade him before we can't afford him...

Hopefully his love of Portland and his eagerness to be a part of a great team will temper his market value contract.  I wouldn't hold it against him to go for the money we couldn't provide, of course... you only got one NBA career.

I predict he'll be used in a sign and trade for a piece we need when his rookie contract is up, but who knows.  Maybe he'll be happy with the city and the team enough to only take several million and not heeps and geeps of millions.  You want back up players who are good enough to start, but realistically it's so tough to not pay out the nose for them.  Perhaps he'll only be a role player and a definate backup, but I don't think that's a good thing to hope for.  It's tough.

Yup
The more I see of Frye, the more I like him.  I think he'll be a good fit with the team and definitely a good fit with Portland.  I really hope that he will play well with LA and we can have a pair of 'junior towers' this season.

Maybe he and LA ought to get a pair of shirts made:  LA's will say 'No, I'm not Channing Frye' and Frye's will say 'No, I'm not LaMarcus Aldridge'

Junk? You call this junk?
Or am I in behind on current slang yet again?

Off topic - in a way - didn't know where else to put it - not worth a diary ---    I move that we muzzle, or at least muffle, TwoDeep ... he had a whole diary LAST FRIDAY devoted to Roy's Heel.  I'd be really concerned if he was the one who spoke of LMAs spontaneous decapitation.

Yeah I agree Jorga,
a muzzle might be in order .... if you think it would help.

But take heart that in that same diary I opined that LMA's heart problems are behind him believing as I do that on their second attempt the doctors identified the correct extra electrical pathway to ablate.  And even if they didn't a 3rd try at it would only have him inactive for 2 or 3 weeks. As I'd posted before, I read up on his WPW sysdrome fairly extensively a couple of years ago when my grandson had the same experience.  Incidentally, it also took two tries for the docs to identify the right spot in his case too. Now he's fine, enabling him to play the sports he loves.

Roy though, remains a huge worry.

I agree
I honestly think I am falling in love with Roy.

Me neither
I'm starting to mellow on the Roy heel issue.  Roy is a tough guy and can probably play with this condition indefinitely.  Back in the day, players nursed these kinds of injuries for entire, hall-of-fame careers.  You ice the sore body part after games, you sit out some practices and maybe the occasional back-to-back, and you kick ass when you're on the floor.

Nowadays, at the first hint of pain they tend to operate--and not always with good results.  In Roy's case, it may be a blessing that the bone-shaving procedure is so risky.  He's quite likely better off without it.

Roy May Miss Entire Preseason
Latest report indicates the possibility that Roy won't play at all in the preseason:

http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2007/10/heel_injury_might_sideline_bla.html

That doesn't sound real good to me. Portland is a young team with several new faces. It would be helpful if they were familiar with each other. That will be more difficult if the floor leader doesn't play or practice with the team.

Man I'm telling you
I'm starting to think it's going to be a year when we get to really see folks play that this summer we thought might not even see the light of day. If Roy's out that would conveniently free up the log jam at point guard by spreading some 1's to the 2.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
