Around SBN: Doug Flutie's Hail Mary, And Why College Sports Matter

Zach Quacks

HoopsHype has a Q+A with Zach Randolph (via Brian Hendrickson).  Just in case you haven't had enough Z-Bo.

The part that made me raise my eyebrows most was this:

HH: In your last three years in Portland, the Trail Blazers were a combined 80-166. How difficult was it to cope with all the losing?

ZR: It was very tough. I know what it feels like to go to the playoffs and I know how the crowd feels and it feels so great and I want to get there again.

Wait a minute, what happened to the annual "My goal is to become an All-Star" statement? Playoffs? Now you want the Playoffs? PLAYOFFS?

All-Star
Maybe he realized that he couldn't make the all-star team at his skill level without being on a playoff team.

Or, sadly,
he was being realistic abou his goals.  Or sees himself as a lock in the East and has moved on.
Believer, you have forgotten the true meaning of Alvis Day. Neither is it ham, nor pomp. Nay, the true meaning of Alvis day is drinking. Drinking and revenge.

You can't have both Dave?
I doubt that having personal AND team goals is not unusual among athletes.

Dang, I don't know, I'm just feeling compelled to defend ZBO a little.  He provided some good moments for our team highlighted by that playoff series against Dallas. He was a talented player.

Nope, his off-court behavior left a lot to be desired although it was never really criminal.

Go Zach I say.  Do good in Manhatten!  Show them you're the player I know you to be, and that many at one time loved in Portland.

Of course you can have both
And I'm not really bagging on him seriously.  But even though you can have both he never mentioned playoffs once here, which is the point.  It was all "Me All-Star".  You might think his teammates would have appreciated reading about a team goal in the papers every once in a while.

Wish Him Well
I hope Zach has a good rest of his career.  He did provide some good moments here in Portland...

but it was usually when he would break out and not play his typical game.  He had stretches where he looked like he might develop into a guy who could read the double team and find the open man but then he would return to being Stat-bo.  I think that's all Dave is saying.  He played for himself alot and winning was secondary to getting his points and rebounds.  Now he is saying the right things in NY, but how long will that last?
