Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Thursday News

Joe Freeman gives us a rundown of the new Comcast network.  Still no deal with sattelite companies though.  Bummer.

TZiller at Ballhype has a rundown of the Northwest Division.

Brian Hendrickson tells us that if Roy plays on Friday Jack may sit.  No injuries, just a rest.  He also submits a full article on Joel Przybilla's comfort zone.

If you can't get enough Przybilla, I understand there's a piece forthcoming on him in Mike Barrett's blog.  It isn't up as I type this but you can keep checking.  No word on whether there will be more shirtless pictures in honor of Jorga.

Also you can check out Mike's shiny new blogroll.  I was teasing about us not being listed.  Now what will I tease him about?

No Lamarcus Aldridge?
Geez, ANOTHER season preview article with no mention of Aldridge.  This time it's by Kings fan Tom Ziller, who predicts horribleness for the Blazers because Oden is out.  That's fine and all, I expect that part of any outsider's preview, but no mention of Aldridge is inexcusable.  You can say we'll maybe have the worst record in the West and I'll smile, but no mention of Aldridge is an INSULT!

I bet dolla's to donuts the Blazers do better than the Kings.  THAT'LL SHOW TZILLER.

For a more personal attack, I'll point out Ziller is much more goofy looking than the cartoon version of himself he uses.  Plus, he wets the bed.

Aldridge the M.I.P.
As I've predicted elsewhere @ blazersedge, LMA will be voted the league's Most Improved Player (barring injury, of course).  This isn't because LMA is necessarily the most improved, but because most "experts" are so ignorant of how good LaMarcus was LAST year.  Between LMA's slow start (after missing training camp), his heart problem, his playing behind Zach or out of position at center, and his being overshadowed by Roy, Aldridge never made it onto the national radar.

So now, even if LMA were just to pick up where he left off last season, the league would be saying, "Where did THIS guy come from?" As a certain banned blazeredge poster would say (with less punctuation), "LMA is the MIP--book it!"

What Mort said,
and I'll add that he made a point of mentioning Jack, Blake and Outlaw ahead of Aldridge as though anyone within 200 miles of Portland thinks they are going to be the key #2 guys.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure Przybilla won't suck as bad.

Oh, and Martell may be a playa this year.

Agree with Mort and Shenanigans
I'll never understand why people who usually do great work (Ziller being one of those people) will agree to extent themselves by writing previews of teams that they know little about. I know a fair amount about the Blazers. If you want me to write a preview about the Blazers, I'd do it. But I'm not going to make myself look foolish and uneducated by writing about something I know little to nothing about, especially if I didn't have time to do proper research.

I think it was an inadvertant omission ....
but you got it corrected Casey with your posted comment to his article.

Re: no satellite yet
Which means all of you outside the local Comcast area MUST start writing to your local providers letting them know how important it is to get this channel.  If no one says BOO they aren't going to jump for whatever ghastly rate Comcast is asking.  But if they get letters, emails, phone calls, they'll start negotiating.

The True Meaning of Festivus
I can understand the sensitivity given how the Blazers have been generally dismissed since the Oden surgery, but keep in mind that the preview you're discussing is from the "Airing of Grievances" section of an "NBA Festivus" post.

In other words: don't take it too seriously, and you might enjoy the unkind words he has had for every other team in the league so far.

Good point
Also I can tell you from first-hand experience that it's devilishly difficult doing previews for every team in the league.  There's always something you'll leave out.  In today's Warriors recap I should have mentioned far more about Biedrins' offensive ability and I barely gave Matt Barnes the time of day even though I think he could help glue the lineup together.

A third-party assessment will never match the completeness or knowledge of someone who follows the team.  Where they are valuable is in showing us our assumptions and biases.  Even with leaving out LMA and not allowing for the fact that our main scorer last year was probably part of the reason our offense was unproductive Ziller still got in the ballpark as far as total wins and some of the issues facing us.  He also reminds us that, despite the era of good feelings, this team still has a long way to go.

You get a more complete and detailed write-up from the bloggers intimately involved with your team but you have to put up with their almost universal optimism.  You get a less tainted perspective from people outside the team's circle but you have to put up with them missing some things.

I think both are valuable.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
