Gameday Open Thread: Celtics vs. Blazers

Here we go.  I said we were going to pull out at least one unexpected win in the next 10 days.  Are the Blazers going to make me look like a genius right away or do we have to wait?

Register every little game-related thought in your head quick just in case it's another stinker where everybody abandons ship two minutes into the second half.

I went to the Boston sister site...
and looked at the Gameday Open Thread for their last game - they call it "Open Game Thread" - and I could not believe my eyes, only two (2) comments! What gives? I may have to look into that further.

One could make them feel better.
If someone went over there, gave them 89(!) users and 3(!) comments throughout the game! Of course, they wouldn't look to kindly at us if we went over and took over their site. It would be especially embarrassing to go gloat now if by some small chance we lost this game.

I went there and am back!
I grabbed a few things without being caught at it. That site is GREEN Man, really GREEN! It was like visiting the Emerald City. I was waiting for The Green Latern, to jump out and Zap me with his Ring O' Power, or something.

Here's a peek at the place;

Does it creep you out?

The other item of interest I swiped;

BRoy's comment after the last "C"'s Game:

In the name of this comment
and in homage to our soon-star-center's fondness for Spongebob I officially declare this opposite day!

We now have a +7.93 chance of beating the Celtics!

But to make it work everyone must now say the OPPOSITE of what they are thinking.  (e.g. "How GOOD it is that Brandon missed another free throw!")  Let our comments henceforth reflect this proclamation!

It so belonged here, I just had to post it (without permission & ken may kick my butt)!

So... let's hear no more talk about youth, rookie walls, inexperience, etc..  NO MORE REALITY!  This team is the greatest team ever assembled and it's about time we recognize that fact.

After they win the NBA title, they are all going to don spiked shoes and gloves, form a baseball team, join the Major League and win the pennant.  On weekends they will individually win all the major golf and tennis tournaments.  The Stanley Cup is a foregone conclusion.  I'm particularly looking forward to the America's cup.

I think the refs
are doing a pretty good job actually. Joel got a little screwed with that T call, but that's always the way the cookie crumbles -- it's not the instigation but the retaliation that gets whistled. We're just getting lit up on penetration and kickouts; the C's knocked down something like 5 threes in that second quarter. Switching to zone might help, but I'd really prefer that they win the game shooting contested jumpers rather than killing us on the offensive glass (which would be our almost certain fate if we play zone for any long stretch).

Here I thought that the NBA player known as Raef LaFrentz had been kidnapped and his slothful, talentless identical twin had taken his spot on the bench. You know, like the basketball version of "I Know Who Killed Me", except we can't have interesing discussions about, after thorough analysis of a recent photo shoot, whether or not Raef's boobs are real.

Raef at least plays tougher than Frye and grabs boards and tries to do as much as his body will allow.  Frye is better at offense, but having a guy who knows what to do because of his many years in the NBA is a rarity for us these days.

Sergio has an Arvydas-esque arc on his shot. The problem is that when Arvydas shot a 3pt, his hands were above the rim.

The Celtics never panicked, never even really used a big spurt to get back into this game. They just tightened up their defense and started whittling away at the lead. I was thinking to myself, "man, I can't wait till the Blazers start playing with this kind of poise in a couple of years." Though having said that, I'm starting to hate the Celtics. The Lakers will always have the primacy of my antipathy, and in years past hating the Celtics was like hating one of those titled dukes in the 1500's who lost everything except for the title. So I watched about 100 Celtics games
in the past two years, and I came to the conclusion that Doc Rivers is a pretty lousy coach.  Yet now the dude looks like a genius: integrating about eight new players into a coherent rotation is no small task.  I've come to two conclusions. Either the vets sat down with Doc Rivers and, like the Celtics teams "coached" by K.C. Jones, told him "Listen, Doc, we know that by some concurrence of solar flares and a lunar eclipse you won COY in Orlando, but you let us run this season cuz you can't coach your way out of a paper bag" -- or all NBA coaching is is having veterans and good players.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 24, 2008 5:12 PM PST reply actions

I think
The right veterans and stars makes anyone look like a genius.  However, in the tight situations, I think Nate has been great and we've won more than we should have with the talent we had on the floor... even when we only won 21 games a few years back.

But I completely agree, Riley and Phil Jackson are geniuses mostly because they had amazing players (if ya ask me).

I really hate Portland's current starting line-up.

Blake and Jack starting in the backcourt together does not work. They get killed by bigger guards and they aren't consistent enough offensively to be productive.

For the record...
Our inability to guard the three lost the game today. Not the guys in the grey shirts.

(I mean, let's say we get 50% of the bad calls in our favor. Does that make them shoot less than 13-20 from three? No.)

by 2011champs on Feb 24, 2008 5:21 PM PST reply actions

Yup
Look up.

Somewhere lost within all the referee complaining, I have explained why the Blazers can't defend the 3:

Jack and Blake are too short and too slow to rotate to the perimeter to get a hand in the average SGs [6'5-6'6] face.

by damir on Feb 24, 2008 5:22 PM PST up reply actions

agreed but
did anyone see Eddie House check Martell out of bounds? This led to a boston fastbreak where, surprise!, House was wide open for 3!  Meanwhile, Webster is picking himself up out of the crowd.

Or how about the blatant moving screen that Pierce set to free up Ray Allen for a three in the first half? That "pick" was football-esque to say the least. Then, moments later Joel was whistled for a moving screen that was clearly not a foul with how the game had been called up to that point.  I am not sure it was a foul in any game to be honest...

And apply it to the next few games. There's some danger of a big losing streak coming, considering the opponents and locations.

Fouls,Boston Fouls
Why don,t they call the fouls on Boston, the way House pushed Webster out of bounds under the basket,Posey traveling instead of making the call they give Boston a time out. Outlaw has been fouled %or 6 times and there has been no call. Its like the refs. work for Boston they must be following them on this road trip. maybe thier Bostons own personal refs.Somebody should send a tape of this game to the League office.

If the refs made every questionable call
In Portland's favor, it still would have been a bad loss. Just worth noting. :) They may be incompetent, but they didn't cause the loss.

Let's hope a healthy Brandon and James helps calm the team and rebuild the offense. And that they survive a few tough games in the meantime.

The Celts were allowed to play a much more physical, aggressive brand of "D" than Portland for most of the game.

But I'm not exactly an unbiased observer, either.

Agreed
It was very frustrating to see something as a foul on one end, while fair game at the other. Moving picks, hard fouling, etc.

I really think the lack of referee consistency is a bigger reason for the NBA's drop in popularity than they'd like to admit.

The first Quarter
That the way the Blazers should play the whole game.Like someone else said maybe they can learn something if Nate make them watch the first quarter tape over and over and over and then watch the last three quarters to let them see how they stop playing with good effort.the first quarter was great to bad the games are four quarters.I think the kinda let the nonfoul calls get inside thier heads which shows that they are still young.

Chalupas
At least Martell sent the fans home with a free chalupa. Travis missing the free throw almost blew it though.

How lame was that dunk by Tony Allen when the game was already over... Unnecessary.

Annoying that the Blazers are inconsistent. I thought Sergio had a great game. However no Channing, Brandon or James Jones... yikes, the injury bug is biting.

I would've liked to see Von Wafer come into the game at the end and minutes for Sergio at the end.
