With the dismantling that was put on the blazers on Tuesday it left me not with not the worst feeling I possibly could have had. I sit here and think back to the game and can honestly say that nothing went right on the offensive or defensive sides of the ball. It was quite evident at the beginning of the game that the ball was not going to bounce in the Blazers favor. When Batum missed 2 layups and LA had to tip in a Layup that he missed it was pretty clear the Blazers were on a off night. However all was not as terrible throughout that first quarter.
If you look back at the game, the Blazers never shot above 40 percent. So in that first quarter the Blazers played well enough on the defensive end to limit the Spurs to a 13 point lead. That is the biggest stat that stands out in my mind. Also with the Blazers missing all of their first half three pointers and SA going 7-11 from beyond the arch. That first three did come form an unlikely source in Will Barton. In his spare minutes that he played he looked like he could get to the rim and knock down some open shots, but that also comes with the lack of defense that he can play. Leonard and Parker made him look silly on a couple of occasions.
We all knew going in to this series that the bench was going to be huge for Portland. They will need at least 20 from their bench a game to stand a chance in this series. Mo, Dorell, and T-Rob are going to need to step it up on the offensive side. I would not mind seeing C.J get into the game, as well as Freeland. The Blazers are going to rely on heavy minutes on the starting 5 but if during that 5 minutes of rest that they are going to get, if we can get any offense out of the bench it might sway all of the momentum in the game if Portland's favor.
So all I can say is throw that first game out. This is why we play 7 games. Even if the Blazers came out and got curb stomped in the first game, if they can take game 2 Home court shifts to Portland. As a good friend of mine reminded me, "Playoff series do not start until the home team loses." Hopefully in this case It starts in San Antonio tonight.
