Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com catches up with Portland Trail Blazers guard Will Barton, who faces a July 31 contract guarantee deadline for his 2014-15 salary of roughly $915,000.
Barton, a 2012 second-round pick, expresses a desire to return to Portland for his third season but says he doesn't yet know what the future holds.
"I try not to think about it as much but I do sometimes," he said. "You just never know what people are thinking. Hopefully I make it past the deadline. I would love to stay here and be here. But, you just never know. I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing.
"Portland took a chance on me. It would be huge if I can stay in Portland. But like I said, it's a business and I'm aware of that. You just never know."
Haynes' full post is here.
Barton, 23, is averaging 3.5 points and 1.6 rebounds in 8.7 minutes over 39 games this season.
For context, only seven other 2012 second-round picks have logged more minutes to date than Barton.
Given his bargain basement price, his improved efficiency this year, his unique skillset relative to his teammates, and his locker room personality, it would qualify as a genuine surprise if Barton's third year wasn't picked up.
