More Impressive Career Highs Than Nic Batum

BrewDude posed a fun question in Ben' recap tonight:

Nic's big rebounding night

got me to thinking about what a list of some of the top 10 players with career highs in each of the big three categories would look like. Maybe some stat geek would take on the challenge. For instance Nic’s career high in points is 35, rebounds is 18 and assists is 14. So he would be a 35-18-14. I wonder how many others would best those stats in all three categories?

The list of Blazers who have had 14 assists in a game is small (9 players):

Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Damon Stoudamire, Rod Strickland, Scottie Pippen, Andre Miller, Kenny Anderson, Steve Blake, and Nic Batum.

And only Clyde is on the list of players who have 18 rebounds for the Blazers.

So, the only Blazer who can top/match Batum’ individual career highs is Clyde Drexler.

Clyde Drexler: 50 points, 18 rebounds, 16 assists

But he matches Batum with 18 rebounds, instead of ‘topping’ him.

To top Batum in all 3 categories, one would need to have 36+ points, 19+ rebounds, 15+ assists

So, basketball reference gives the following results:

How many players have had 15 or more assists(‘85-86): 178 possible players.
How many players have had 19 or more rebounds(’85-86): 253 possible players.
How many players have had 36 or more points(’63-64): 570 possible players.

Throwing the assist and rebound lists into a spreadsheet and alphabetizing and matching gives 6 players who have had a game with 15+ assists and a game with 19+ rebounds:

Charles Oakley 35 points, 35 rebounds, 15 assists
Fat Lever 38 points, 22 rebounds, 16 assists
Hedo Turkoglu 39 points, 19 rebounds, 17 assists
Jason Kidd 43 points, 19 rebounds, 17 assists
Larry Bird 60 points, 20 rebounds, 16 assists
Lebron James 61 points, 19 rebounds, 16 assists

So, take out Charles Oakley because he matches Nic Batum with a career high of 35 points, instead of ‘topping’ Batum. (But man that career high rebounding night is impressive)

There are 5 players that have bested all 3 of Nic Batum’ career highs in points, rebounds and assists since the 1985-86 season:

Fat Lever 38 points, 22 rebounds, 16 assists
Hedo Turkoglu 39 points, 19 rebounds, 17 assists
Jason Kidd 43 points, 19 rebounds, 17 assists
Larry Bird 60 points, 20 rebounds, 16 assists
Lebron James 61 points, 19 rebounds, 16 assists
