Now there are plenty of reasons that this is really interesting. Portland tends to be a pretty progressive place, and while I generally dislike any sort of politics in my sports, I think it would be really great of the city and the fans if we gave him a standing ovation when he was first subbed in.
Gay athletes have historically have a very rough time. Collins will actually be wearing #98 in honor of a high school gay athlete that was killed in a hate crime in 1998.
I know many people sort of cringe when their sports become about the people, or about the personalities, or about the politics, and not everyone thinks that being gay is okay. But I think it would mean a lot to so many people that have a very tough time in life because of their sexuality if Portland could show their support for Collins when him and the Nets visit town.
Just my 2 cents.
