What Happens If Someone Wows at Camp?

Like some of you, I was intrigued by the signing of Richard Howell to a training camp deal. On paper, at least, he seems to have a legitimate chance of having some of the things the '13-'14 'zers are going to need: Defensive rebounding, shot-blocking, decent offensive efficiency. And I don't think anyone would argue that he wouldn't be a nice addition to our frontcourt depth. Heck, last year he would have probably been the Bench's best rebounder and could have easily stolen Luke Babbit's 6th Man of The Year award (I KID!) Ziggythebeagle did one of his great comparable analysis posts if you're curious about him.

At last check, the Blazers have 19 players on their roster including 15 with guaranteed deals. Usually that means that none of this summer's training camp invitees have much of a shot at making the Portland squad. Maybe Boise, of course, but that's another conversation.

But what if one of these invitees really wows both Stotts and Olshey? Like really wows them? If they wanted Howell (or any of the non-guaranteeds but for argument's sake we'll say Howell since he's more of a position/skill set of need than a one or a three, etc.) could they, would they clear a roster spot for him? And how would they have to go about doing it? And who would be the odd-man-out?

Would we have to buy someone out? Trading for cash considerations/99th-round-pick? Box them up and mail them to Boise with a bogus return address?

Personally, I'd love to replace Freeland with Howell (free up a little bit of money, too) but that seems unlikely given his contract and un-tradability; it also seems obvious that we've got too many guards and not nearly enough minutes to go around. Seems like one of the young guards, Crabbe or Barton would be the most likely candidates, depending on their training camp performance. Or maybe you send Howell to the Stampede with the hunch that Watson would be cut at the deadline and he will get brought up?

Please, wise friends, what would the Blazers do if suddenly a training camp invitee won their hearts? Could they make a fit? And if so, how?
