I have sleep apnea.
Some of you may know what that is as Brian Wheeler has it as well. I am currently still under my parents medical insurance plans (just graduated from OSU with a degree in Marketing, currently looking for a job). My parents both have Moda insurance. So I am double covered through them.
In the past from previous insurances I have been able to receive sleep studies from the sleep doctor. They are CPAP titrations that allow the doctor to find out what pressure the machines need to be set at to stop the majority of the "breathing events" (sleep apnea is when one stops breathing several times during the night, in my case upwards of 100, it snaps the body unconsciously out of REM sleep, don’t wake feeling rested, dangerous for health). I haven’t had a titration done in over 3 years. I have had trouble with the machine but want to take control of my health and get back to using the CPAP, problem is I need a sleep study to find out the correct pressure. Just last week I had an appointment, the doctor said I needed a sleep study, then asked me if I still had my older insurance. I said no, I now have Moda. Instantly all the happiness my doctor had was flushed away, as he began to tell me that Moda is not understanding of sleep medicine and he has had numerous problems getting them to cover sleep studies (which by other insurance companies, has never been a problem). He checked, and sure enough they won’t cover it. Even though I’m double covered and both of my parents are paying to Moda Health.
One Week later… They drop a $40 million dollar check…. to put their name on a building. and leave their own patients like me out of luck.
Now, I’m a marketing major and I’m not against naming rights. I understand from a business perspective what the Trail Blazers are doing. I’m disappointed with and upset at the heads of Moda throwing tens of millions of dollars around for naming money when they can’t help provide their paying patients with something simple as a sleep study.
I’m just sad, I want my health back, my life back, and I’m trying. It’s just discouraging to see Moda take actions like this after what just happened to me. Thank you for reading this if you did. I’m not asking for money or anything like that, I just needed to vent my feelings on this deal from a perspective that many of you don’t have but may find interesting. Thanks BE readers.
