Since the trade deadline when Hickson wasn't moved there has been a small part of me that wanted him back on the Blazer's roster for 2013-2014 season. The two concerns were, "would he be ok with coming off the bench?" and "how much would the Blazer's have to pay him?", both valid concerns after the year he had.
When Robinson was acquired I knew he wasn't going to be back and was perfectly ok with it because of those two concerns. When I looked at hoopshype last night I was kind of in shock. I thought to myself "he signed with Denver to play under the Manimal and Galo? For 5 mil a year?
I am no cap expert but it seems like the Blazers could have not traded for Robinson, not signed Watson, still payed Hickson the 5 mil/year he got from Denver, traded for Lopez, signed Wright and drafted CJ.
I like the acquisition of Robinson but if the Blazer's were really trying to build a solid playoff team and keep LA here long term wouldn't Hickson coming off the bench be a safer bet than Robinson, at least for the next couple years. I know Robinson has more potential in general especially on the defensive end but Hickson liked Portland and already proved himself to be a double double machine and great locker room guy. Robinson could play bad enough that the Blazer's don't pick up his options moving forward and get nothing for those 2nd round picks and Euros.
I was perfectly ok with Hickson's departure when I thought he needed to start getting paid around 8 mil a year for the Hawks or Suns but 5 mil a year coming off the bench in Denver just doesn't sit right with me. Am I the only one who feels this way?
