I have been pondering that for intents and purposes the Blazers are done in FA. For all that was available to us and for the little spending money we actually had we came out swinging.
When we landed Robin Lopez I was at first thinking he was trade bait (and he still might be) - later however, after watching as much film on him as I could - I started to think "this is a guy who is entering his breakout years and really has developed some nice low post moves, a smooth left hand baby hook and runs the P & R very well. He is much better on defense than I would have supposed. He plays with passion and aggression - he is durable!
When I considered the "fan-focused" wants of the likes of Pek, Asik and Vucejevic - I mused that we were not going to get these guys as none were UFA's - and as I looked further we really do not get much more from any of these desirables as we get in Lopez - especially at the cost to the overall structure of the team.
So now this team has Lopez - what do we need him to be? Given the defense played by Hickson last year it seems we need him to protect the rim (last line of defense), to seal well, box out and play his normal passionate game.
He does not need to score as this team has a core 4 of proven scorers and now an energetic bench talented scorers - and we will probably add another scoring threat to fill out this team.
In short, Lopez needs to be Lopez - our shallow expectations for him should serve us well. He does not need to stand out - at all. He needs to stabilize the center position, keep the monkey off LMA and be an above average offensive rebounder (a strength) and defend the pick and roll. He is not pretty to watch like his brother - and we do not need him to be!
