Top 3 vs Big 3 and those other players who start games....

Unless you live under a rock the term big 3 has been tossed around for a long time now, but what does it take to have a true big three? How close is Portland to having a legit big 3? Now the answer to this questions may be a bit surprising.

Here are the stats of Miami's:

Bosh

Points:

The first category we should look at would be points. Now out of these six players only one of them beats the average points needed for a big three and that would be James. Effectively one player brings up the entire average for that team one could argue that in this category that Bosh should not be considered a big three player.

If we compare our top three the only player in the range would be LA, Lillard has the potential to reach to 21-22 PPG but that leaves us with Batum who is significantly far behind. In order for us to have a legit Big 3 we need to come up with about 9 PPG between these three players.

Blocks:

Having a point guard as a big three it will be difficult for us to compete in the blocks category, more below.

Assists:

Arguably this is our strongest category within our top three only falling slightly short of the big three (I know none of the Miami big three are point guards but Mario Chalmer's 3.5 APG are partially absorbed absorbed by Mathews.)

Rebounds:

We get rebounded by the big there by an average of almost 1 RPG!

Now we should take a look at the starting 5 averages for two teams (new players for Portland will changes this, I used last years stats for Lopez but it will not be the same)

These numbers are the averages.

Now from these stats which team would you rather be?

Team A is your Portland Trail Blazers and Team B is the Miami heat. Please take this with a grain of salt, as these are just raw numbers and we do not know how chemistry is going to be, also we need to take into account our bench. On a side note All of our starting 5 in this scenario all have double digit scoring.

With all the data out there we know our starting 5 can do well, and I think that the addition of Lopez our front line was a significant increase. I also love the recent bench moves as that was the largest reason we had issues last year. To be competitive this year we need our bench to step up. We have added a few new rooks and sophomores and even if one of them pan outcome will be great.
