I have seen multiple post and comments that have been pro trading away assets this year i.e., Aldridge, in hopes of acquiring a high draft pick in the 2014 draft highlighted by Wiggins. While I understand that worry of getting caught in no man land, I am puzzled by this line of thinking. One reason is Dame. Is only in year two, are we really resigned he is already at his peak? Will he not improve on D? Will he not be more efficient in years to come? Will he not improve overall? He was a rookie who was forced to chuck and who played the most min in the league, to me we still have a long way to go with Dame. Heck we were in the playoff hunt for half the season. We are not the bobcats, or pelicans, or suns, or magic, we have one all-star and another borderline all-star who was in his rookie year. ANY LOTTERY TEAM AND MOST NON-LOTTERY TEAMS WOULD TAKE THAT IN A HEARTBEAT!!!!! Are we not jumping ship on the Aldridge-Lillard connection early? This goes without any mention of improvement by Batum or Barton or anyone else on the roster, I for one think both Barton and Claver fit nicely with PDX.
Even more troubling than this however is trading a known quantity for an unknown quantity. There are multiple issues with that and the most glaring one I see is that the top picks next year are all in high school and no matter what they all have to play somewhere else other than in the NBA. While I’m not arguing that Wiggins, Randle, Parker and others might be talented college and future NBA players, there is no possible way of knowing. If I remember correctly last year at this time we had a poster on BE that’s name was Suck for Shabazz and maintained that Shabazz was worth tanking for because he could bring the Blazers to the promise land. He was considered by some the best scorer in a generation and a top three pick lock. Now look at him, barley hanging on in the lottery in a “weak” draft. Now I’m not saying Wiggins or any others who are projected for 2014 will flame out, but you just don’t know. Oden got hurt, look at Zeller, he was going number 1 till we got more tape on him. While the 14 draft might be good, next year at this time Wiggins could have flamed out ala Shabazz and we will be sitting here talking about how we should trade our picks and players for the 2015 draft. You can’t trade a dollar for 25 cents and gamble on making the rest up in the future. Aldridge is a KNOWN all-star NOW. Dame is borderline-all star NOW!!! I know that just getting to the playoffs isn’t enough but why when we are only one piece and a few nice bench players away from competing in the playoffs THIS YEAR would we blow up our team for something we are known for failing at (the draft)
