Hello everyone. You don't know me but I know you. I know this sounds creepy. I have been lurking for years, reading posts and comments without making my own account, but I decided to give some input.
first of all, my general opinion about building the team is that cap space is overrated. It seems like the only players worth anything that actually make it to UFA status are big stars that will never sign with Portland. We all know the problems with RFAs, if they are worth it, they get matched by their teams. In my opinion it is more valuable to gather assets than have cap space. These things are usually mutually exclusive. In the past Portland has been able to make deals because they had assets, even if they didn't have cap room. The last two years Portland has had cap room but no assets, and that has gotten us nowhere. My idea has some ifs, but could be a good idea.
Throw $12 a year at Tyreke and hope Sac does match. Trade Wes for a future pick, or include him in a sign and trade for Tyreke. Sign Jermaine O'Neal with the exception. Resign JJ for $7 per year.
Front court rotation: Lamarcus, JO, JJ, MyLo, Withey
Back court rotation: Dame, Tyreke, CJ, Barton
Batum, Tyreke, and Claver can rotate at SF.
I know that this roster will not contend for a championship, but it will probably be good enough to keep LMA happy and make the playoffs. This gives the team options to tweak the roster with trades and MLE additions in future years. Guys like Barton, Withey, Freeland, Claver, Crabb, etc. will be far more valuable in a couple years, and yield better results. If LMA wants a trade next year, we can do it without nuking the entire roster. We would simply try to acquire more assets.
