In an effort to brainstorm useful ideas to make the Blazers better I am suggesting acquiring players that could compete with Miami. We know that LaMarcus makes a great "small ball center". I am wondering if you could get away with Myers Leonard and Jermaine O'neal going forward as a center by committee. This would be your cheapest option for filling the center position. Miami has centers on their roster that are essentially used for spot play when they cannot fully get away with their small ball play. I am suggesting that the Blazers use a center by committee against those teams that rely on traditional big production.
The players that I am thinking would make the Blazers competitive in a small ball way are:
- Tyreke Evans
- Paul Millsap
- Jermaine O'neal on a veterans minimum contract after all cap space is gone
There is another FanPost that suggests acquiring Josh Smith. I like Josh Smith as well; however, I think he will cost more than the salary cap. Evans and Millsap would be difficult to fit with the salary cap. I think you would have to make approximately $21 million of cap space available to acquire both. In order to clear cap space, the following would have to be accomplished:
- Trade Wesley Matthews
- Use the #10 pick to facilitate trading Joel Freeland
In addition to acquiring Paul Millsap and Tyreke Evans I would look to draft Mike Muscala as an additional versatile big man and floor stretcher. Pleas let me know your thoughts, modifications and methods for clearing salary cap space.
