Isaiah Canaan Comparable Analysis

My brother read an article on Isaiah Canaan and asked me to run a comp analysis, so that is why I am doing him now.

He is a little heavier than average, but his body fat is lower than average, so the extra weight is muscle. You can see this as well in his bench press results, where he did 16, which is 5 more than average for a player of his size. His wingspan and reach are longer than average, and he has a good vertical, average speed, and good agility. So he is strong, has good length, is a good leaper, and is above average athletically.

Below are the top 20 Comp seasons to Isaiah Canaan at age 20 and 21. The 4th column is only statistical similarity, and does not include any combine measurements.

Look at the big picture, he has a 63% chance of being Dan Dickau, Bryce Drew, Shawn Respert or worse. Yes he has a 10% chance of becoming a Damian Lillard type, and a less than 40% chance of being David Wesley, or Derek Fisher. He is clearly no better than second round talent. As good an athlete as Isaiah Canaan is he does not translate into a good NBA player

Isaiah Canaan projects to be a mediocre to below average NBA shooter (42%, 36.7%, 80%) with a TS% of 52.4%. He is also a very high usage rate player, with a 3 year average usage rate of 22.2%, which for a young player is extremely high. His 21.9% assist rate is decent for a combo guard, but for a back-up PG it is poor. His shooting rate stats are a about the same as Eric Maynor (42%, 38%, 68% with a TS% of 51%), and his AST% is 8% below Eric Maynor. His turnover rate of 15.7% is ok, better than Maynor and Nolan Smith, nit as good as Lillard. Overall Canaan projects to be a below average NBA offensive player, a low efficiency, high usage player. Defensively his DRtg is 111 for a 3 year average. This is comparable to Lillard, and a little better than Maynor, and both of those 2 are below average to poor NBA defenders. Isaiah Caanan has third string NBA point guard written all over him. His NBA career will be not be very long I suspect.
