After watching the Spurs sweep the Grizz and taking a long look at the remaining teams it has become clear to me and others that this superstar theory may not be the answer. Miami is the only team with "Superstars" left on it and the remaining three teams are truly well balanced that play sound team basketball. Lebron has moved to posting up to score more efficiently and each of the other three teams has a great low post big (West, Timmy, and Randolph). These teams also have a young, scoring point guard who can create offense for himself and his team in Parker, Hill and Conely. Lastly, and most importantly, each has a defensive rim protecting big who can get it done on both end (Hibbert, Gasol and Timmy/Splitter).
This Portland team has two of these in Aldridge, the best low post player in the league in my opinion, and Lillard. If we are able to add a strong defensive center to this roster we would instantly become a playoff team but for me that is not enough to just get bounced in the first round. So that is were we need to add a secondary ball handler to help alleviate pressure off of Lillard and that could lead our second unit's offense. Batum has shown glimpses of being able to be this playmaker but we need someone who is focused on this aspect.
That is why I bring to you guys this. We acquire our defensive rim protector in either McGee or Deandre. Denver has too many centers and they will be looking to get rid of McGee which we could trade for with Matthews and our pick. If the Clippers go after Dwight like many believe they will that means the will be shopping Deandre and we are one of the few teams that could absorb that contract. Both guys would only be looked at for rebounding, setting screens, defense and sick dunks which both have proved they can do very well. This allows Aldridge to focus on defending the post and then sprinting to the other end to get position to set up the offense while McGee/Deandre rebounds the ball. Aldridge has never had an elite shot blocker and rebounder paired next to him and I believe that is what has held him back from becoming the best scoring PF in the league. This solves one of our Center problem for the future too because it gives Meyers time to develop next to an atheletic Center in his prime, which we hope Meyers could eventually turn into.
Solving the new problem of who starts at SG now is not an easy problem to solve but is much more manageable than at center. Tyreke seems like a great choice and with the remaining 10 mill we have in cap space I think would be enough to get him from SAC. He is a strong ball handler who can get to the rim at will and has shown he can distribute the ball at a high level as well. Batum and Tryeke would be a great set of dynamic wings that balance each other out greatly where as Mattews and Batum shared too many of the same attributes. These two could also work with the 2nd unit together or alone with Freeland/Claver at the 4 Meyers at the 5 and Maynor at the Point.
People say that we need to improve our bench drastically but honestly I don't think it needs much more. At the beginning of the season our bench consisted of 4 rookies that could sort of produce, a couple scrubs/old balls, and one injured guy with potential in EWill. At the end of the season Maynor, Barton, Claver and Meyers all showed they could put in meaningful minutes and I still have hope that Freeland can become a LA lite on offense. With these five role players having one full season under their belt they now know their short comings are and can adjust this offseason. They will come back better and our bench will be able to produce especially if we can always have either Tyreke or Batum out their with them as the first option.
Lillard Aldridge and Batum can be our core but adding those complementary pieces is what will put us over the top of mediocre into great. We do not need some crazy pick in the next draft, we do not need a superstar like dwight, we need to play team basketball with a full supporting cast with each player focusing on what they do best and nothing more.
Post in the comments what you think of this. This is my first post but tear me to shreds if you think I am an idiot or praise me if you think I am a genius.
Do as you please. Go Blazers. **** the Lakers. Beers.
