Chris Hansen is not giving up. His new offer for the Kings increased to 409 million and included the promise to be an annual payer for revenue sharing. Also the Seattle group has also pledged to pay for all relocation fees, roughly 115 million dollars. In an unprecedented move the Maloofs, the current ownership of the Kings announced that if the relocation to Seattle falls through they would not sell the Kings to the Sacramento-group. If indeed the relocation does does fall through the Maloofs have stated that they will sell 20% of their ownership (roughly 125 million) to the Seattle led group and continue operations in Sacramento. The Sacramento led group, led by Mayor Kevin Johnson has clearly had the support of the NBA, but this puts the NBA in a tough position. If the NBA votes down the relocation to Seattle, they are potentially stuck with the uncooperative Maloofs as owners who have ran the Kings into the ground. From Seattle's perspective this essentially is a strong-arm technique to force the NBA to allow the relocation to Seattle. The league could make an unprecedented move and force the Maloofs to sell to the Sacramento-group, but this likely could cause grounds for a lawsuit by the Maloofs and the Seattle group.
The recent events concerning this Seattle-Sacramento have plunged the NBA into uncharted territory. The NBA has never forced an NBA owner out. The NBA has also never rejected the sale of a team, unless financial criteria have not been met. Historically the NBA also has never rejected the relocation of a team if the financial backing is there and if an arena deal is in place. Even though History may be on Seattle's side, the NBA so far has shown a commitment to keeping the NBA in Sacramento.
So here it is how it potentially will play out: 1) The NBA board of governors vote down the relocation to Seattle and the Maloofs sell 20% of their team to the Seattle group, staying in Sacramento (at least for the time being) This also could result in an anti-trust lawsuit for denying relocation. 2) The NBA board of governors votes down the relocation of Seattle, and forces the Maloofs to sells to the Sacramento group. (this could be grounds for a lawsuit by the Maloofs and Seattle). 3) The NBA approves the relocation to Seattle. 4) The NBA grants an expansion team to Seattle (reported to be unlikely).
Regardless of how it ends someone is likely to get hurt.
How do you think it will play out?
