The Road to the Playoffs

The Lakers have the 8th seed right now but are barely hanging on. The Jazz, Mavs, and Blazers are closely following in that order. Here’s what the rest of the schedules look like through the end of the season:

(note: I'm counting these 4 teams as "playoff caliber")

Lakers: 36-35

Games left: 11

Home Games: 6

Away Games: 5

Playoff caliber teams: 8

Battle Games: vs Dallas, @ Portland

Jazz: 35-36

Games left: 11

Home Games: 7

Away Games: 4

Playoff caliber teams: 7

Battle Games: @ Portland, vs Portland,

Mavs: 34-36

Games left: 12

Home Games: 7

Away Games: 5

Playoff caliber teams: 8

Battle Games: @ LA, @ Portland

Blazers: 33-37
Games left: 12

Home Games: 8

Away Games: 4

Playoff caliber teams: 12

Battle Games: vs Utah, @ Utah, vs Dallas, vs LA

After looking at this, I would say that Portland and LA have equally difficult schedules down the stretch. Portland because they play 12 playoff caliber teams and LA because they have almost half of their games left on the road – and they’re not that good on the road this year. The Jazz have the easiest schedule left, but they also play us twice – and we’re 1.5 games behind them. Meaning – if we beat the Jazz both times that we play them, that gives us an advantage over them in the race. The Mavs are probably the secret favorite to slip into the 8 spot if it were determined only be schedule difficulty - but the 2 battle games on the road make their battle games the most difficult. SO CRAZY how close this is going to be. Personally, I like that the Blazers have 4 battle games left and that 3 of them are at home. I feel like we have a legitimate, albeit difficult chance to squeak in there. What do you guys think? Who gets the 8 spot?
