It's very interesting that the Blazers are dead last in the NBA in steals. We play pretty good perimeter and on-ball defense, and pretty poor interior defense (sort of by design). We have long guys like Batum, LA, and Lopze that could get steals from their length alone and guys like Wes and Dame who are feisty. We just don't play the passing lanes, and again I know that is by design but I would like to see us do it some.
The Cats are 29th in steals and almost average 1 more a game then us so it's not even close. Miami averages 10, about twice as much as us and look at their shooting %. The amount of steals and easy dunks help that % with easy buckets immensely. I realize if you commit to the passing lanes you can get burned but with us shooting lots of 3's on the break, and making most of them, paired with being 11th in the league in fast break efficiency I think it would be a good trade-off. I don't see why this team can't average 8 steals a game and get 7 more points a game from those, not to mention gaining momentum, getting the other team tired etc... Miami won the game by getting so many steals against us (a ridiculous 13)
What do you guys think? Should we make it a priority?
