How the Blazers could fit into the Asik deal

For salary reasons, it's going to take a pretty bitter pill for the Blazers to take on Asik. Even though I want them to, I'm going to assume they aren't going to acquire him at this time. That doesn't mean they are out of the entire deal, in fact, as the supposed "wild card" in the mix, they may be looking to help facilitate a deal whereby Asik goes to another team.

Here's a look at how Asik's $8.7 cap figure fits with the teams "in contention"

Portland: Over the cap, would need to include at least $6.9m in outgoing salary in the deal

Atlanta: Under the cap, but would go over by > $100,000 if they acquire Asik. Would need to send out salary of $5.7m to complete a deal

Cleveland: Over the cap, would need to include $6.9m in salary to finish the deal

Philadelphia: Way under the cap, could take on Asik and an additional $900k in salary without returning anything.

How can Portland fit in? Both Cleveland and Atlanta may need some help in matching salaries to finish the deal.

To get to their respective numbers, Atlanta would need to come up with a combination of...

Meanwhile, Cleveland would have to package:
  • Bynum or Verejao
  • Jarret Jack + Anyone
  • Earl Clark + CJ Miles + Anyone
  • Waiters + Gee
  • etc
I ran out of steam writing this all up, but suffice it to say, I'd be looking at Millsap if I were Houston. They'll need to sweeten the pot a bit (why should Atlanta help solve Houston's problem, AND add a quality player, AND take on extra cash obligations without some sweetener?). Montiejunas or Jones might be a bridge too far for Houston. In a straight Asik for Millsap swap, Atlanta may want to shed a little salary while they are at it, offloading a Gustavo Ayon (a palatable backup center) at $1.5 for Claver; or more formidably, Claver + Leonard for Elton Brand, who remains a decent rebounder in limited minutes, not that he'd resolve the teams defensive issues.
