For salary reasons, it's going to take a pretty bitter pill for the Blazers to take on Asik. Even though I want them to, I'm going to assume they aren't going to acquire him at this time. That doesn't mean they are out of the entire deal, in fact, as the supposed "wild card" in the mix, they may be looking to help facilitate a deal whereby Asik goes to another team.
Here's a look at how Asik's $8.7 cap figure fits with the teams "in contention"
Portland: Over the cap, would need to include at least $6.9m in outgoing salary in the deal
Atlanta: Under the cap, but would go over by > $100,000 if they acquire Asik. Would need to send out salary of $5.7m to complete a deal
Cleveland: Over the cap, would need to include $6.9m in salary to finish the deal
Philadelphia: Way under the cap, could take on Asik and an additional $900k in salary without returning anything.
How can Portland fit in? Both Cleveland and Atlanta may need some help in matching salaries to finish the deal.
To get to their respective numbers, Atlanta would need to come up with a combination of...
- Kyle Korver or
- Lou Williams + Anyone or
- Elton Brand + Demarre Carroll or
- Elton Brand + Any two low paid players or
- Paul Millsap ($9.5m)
- Bynum or Verejao
- Jarret Jack + Anyone
- Earl Clark + CJ Miles + Anyone
- Waiters + Gee
