Taking The High Road: Dealing with the Bandwagon

This Portland season has been both special and completely surreal. Its been entertaining watching Portland win again and again, while seeing sports know it alls talk or post about how Portland cannot sustain it. Well, the prognosticators and sports Know-It-Alls are coming around to Portland and giving credit where credit is do.

While its great to see Aldridge, Lillard, Mathews, Batum, Lopez and Stouts getting their due, there are unfortunate side affects of success in pro-sports -- Bandwagon fans and Obnoxious fans. I don't mind Bandwagon fans -- to be honest -- because they are indicative of success. You can't have a Bandwagon if the music stinks.

Its the Obnoxious fans that concern me the most. We all talk about how obnoxious Lakers fans are, but I have been reading some fairly obnoxious things on some sports boards from folks claiming to be Portland fans. They may be bandwagoners or not, but every obnoxious fan post I read about Portland makes me a little ill.

We have a really good fan base with knowledgeable fans that are passionate. This season we are being treated to something that really may happen only once a generation. I cringe at the idea of people one day saying how obnoxious Blazer fans are -- when we all know that by and large all the posters I've been reading for the past 5 years or so have been civil, respectful and decent.

What can we do -- if anything -- to prevent our reputation as good fans from eroding -- or am I worrying about nothing?

Can we self police -- calling out obnoxious posts on boards? Is it worth doing this, or should should we just let the Bandwagon roll . . .
