So the Suns GM and O'Neal have recently engaged in what is described as a "loud, expletive-laced confrontation" by A-Woj.. which makes me think of the Suns as a potential trade partner. They have a lot of pieces and the front office is a mess right now which opens a window for us to try and acquire some pieces. The question would be what pieces would the Blazers have to give up to get him back ?
At this point I think we have a good chance at acquiring him using nothing but our Felton trade exception and possibly some cash consideration or 2nd round picks seeing as he's on a 1 year contract worth around 800,000.
We could also throw him J.J. Hickson and try to get some talent back.. someone like Jarred Dudley who's on a 4 year contract and is making around 4,250,000.
Or maybe even package Joel Freeland and Hickson for Marcin Gortat ! The possibilities are numerous when it comes to trading HIckson to the Suns, and he might block the trade if he doesnt want to play for a losing team, but he's on a contract year and trading away O'Neal opens up some minutes for him and he could be a starter there.. he would have a bigger role there than he does here. But ultimately, O'Neal is available and can be acquired for cheap, regardless of Hickson.
What Jermaine O'Neal would bring to this team is exactly what it needs desperately to start winning games this season: Interior Defense. His experience would also be a welcome addition to a team that lacks it. I think he'd welcome a trade to Portland considering we're an upgrade over Phoenix in terms of basketball, he would get serious minutes here, and he could see it as sort of a full circle for his NBA career.
