According to Beck, a fairly reliable source, the Knicks have decided not to match Houston's offer for Lin. Essentially, the Knicks have decided to let Lin walk for NO RETURN! Even better, they will transition from having a franchise-revitalising point guard in Lin, to Felton, in one season, for no real reason. I suppose it is sick of me to take so much joy in this, but the pain that the Knicks will be feeling this upcoming season, the same pain that we Blazer's fans got to enjoy this past season, is completely self-inflicted!
Imagine if Lin had been a Blazer. And he played to the same level and generated the same level of national, and international, hysteria (simply hypothetical, I realise Lin would have got no opportunity under Nate, or the recognition even if he did). Imagine that sponsorships were up, a whole new fanbase was being brought in, all kinds of benefits were being reaped OUTSIDE of the basketball court, on top of the fact he was the best point guard your organisation had seen in some time.
Now imagine, over in New York, Felton was having the same season for the Knicks he just had for the Blazers. The whole team imploded, New York went from being talked up as one of the outside (admittedly VERY outside) chances for a championship run to tanking for draft picks. Imagine that you watched the Knicks point guard almost single-handedly run the team into the ground. Imagine he had showed up in New York out of shape, and was taking shots at the coach in the media.
Now imagine that the Blazers, who had this talented young point guard, almost as valuable for his off-court contributions to the team as he is on the court, decided to let him walk for NOTHING! And then, to replace your immensely popular young point guard, you trade for the guy who just ran New York into the ground.
As much as some Blazers fans like to take shots at Allen, this would never happen under Allen. I struggle to think of another team that would let this happen. So if your tempted to feel sorry for the Knicks, just remember, THEY DID THIS TO THEMSELVES!!!!
