The Free-Agent Point Guards (informational reference)

This post provides a complete list of all available free-agent point guards sorted into Unrestricted and Restricted categories. Then based on Neil Olshey’s press conference remarks, I have applied an age criteria to the lists, and a few simple conditions to pare the lists down further.

The lists are informational. I won’t express any opinions in the body of the post about which free agents to pursue. That can be discussed in the comments section if anyone wishes. But I don’t see any PG’s in the draft that could start for the Blazers, so if we don't trade draft pick(s) for a point guard, free agency is about the only way we can get a starting PG for next year. It is possible we could trade Matthews without a draft pick(s), or sign & trade Batum to get a PG, but that seems unlikely.

Hoopsworld provided a complete list which I sorted into unrestricted free-agents and restricted free agents because I believe the Blazers will be much less likely to make an offer to a restricted free-agent. They need to sign any free agents quickly before having to match a Batum offer sheet. Else they risk losing $5M-$6M of cap space if their restricted free-agent offer sheet were matched and then they had to match a Batum offer sheet before they could get other free agents signed.

The Hoopsworld list is long, and includes players with options. It’s possible a player would choose not to opt-out and therefore would not become a free-agent. It is also possible a team will not make a Qualifying Offer (QO) to a player eligible to be a restricted free agent and that player would become an unrestricted free agent instead.

I sorted the Hoopsworld list into the four categories using their data - Unrestricted Free Agents, players with Options that would be Unrestricted Free Agents if they exercise their option, Restricted Free Agents coming off first round rookie contracts, and Restricted Free Agents not on first round contracts. I added some simple stats for each player, which includes their age, minutes per game their last season, assists per game, points per game, and last season’s salary (the salary was taken from Hoopsworld and may not agree with Storytellers data). I’ll present those entire lists first, and then I will cut the lists down to likely candidates based on Olshey's comments about age and some reasonable assumptions.

So first the entire lists for the sake of completeness.

To cut the list down to more likely candidates I removed all players over 30 years old based on Neil Olshey’s press conference remarks. He seemed quite clear he wanted a PG in the same age range as LaMarcus, but I pushed that to 30 years old. I also removed all players that averaged less than 20 minutes a game assuming the Blazers wouldn’t consider a player as a PG starter if he had played less minutes (but that could happen – see Lin, Jeremy last year). And finally I removed a couple players that played less than 15 games last year. Those were players called up from the D league.

The remaining list of Unrestricted Free Agents consists of only 10 candidates (if we pretend Felton is candidate):

As I said above, I don’t expect the Blazers to go after a restricted free agent because that would leave them in a position of possibly losing a lot of cap space if their offer sheet is matched and they had to match a Batum offer sheet before signing other free agents.

But here is the list of the remaining seven Restricted Free Agents after the Qualifying Conditions are applied.
