In 1984 I was in the Military Infantry School in Toledo, Spain, making my military service.
At that time women were not allowed to join the Army. Spain was a very machist country. My captain was a guy who
really loved his job. He hated that we had to take too many security measures to avoid accidents, to the point that
we could not learn to be soldiers. One day, during real fire practices, a mortar made a strange sound, something
like “piungggg!” instead of the normal “tuuckt” (sorry if I don´t remember well those). Then we heard the bomb
coming on us “phiuuhhhhhh”. We were lucky and nobody was hurt, and that made my captains day, because he
was so happy having been under fire. Well, going to the point, one day we were watching the Olympics and we saw
Gabrielle Andersen. I remember my captain (capt. Balaguer) saying with sincere emotion: “man, I would feel proud
leading a platoon of women like this one”.
Toledo used to have some artistical manhole covers. Problem was people stole them. Nice historical city.
I won´t miss basketball this summer. In addition with Olympics and summer league, I´ll follow (somehow) the U17
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP (29 JUNIO – 8 JULIO), EUROPEAN U16M (19-29 JULIO), EUROPEAN U20M (12-22
JULIO) and EUROPEAN U18M (9-19 AGOSTO). I´ll be an expert by september.
I think these ones have already been posted, but they are worth a second look:
