What happened to our ability to draft?

I so miss the days when we were really, really good at the draft. Yes, the Bowie over Jordan pick was a bad call, but honestly if we simply had won the flip of a coin Portland would have been Title Town for a decade and not Chicago. Consider that our core of Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Duckworth, and Uncle Cliffy all went in picks outside the current lottery and in most cases way past the lottery. I excluded Buck since we did not draft him though he was certainly a hugely important key to our success (thank you Sam Bowie). How did we manage to assemble that type of talent with no lottery types of picks back then, and now we seem to get more than our fair share of Eurostash or otherwise low producers or yet worse walking wounded? Here is to hoping that our new GM can conjure up some magic of our past and create a core truly capable of contending.
