Well Charlotte is staying away from the NBA pedigree and have reached into the college ranks-hiring St John's asst coach Mike Dunlap. This looks to bode well for the Blazers with Brian Shaw of Indiana, Mike Malone of the Warriors, and incumbent interim coach Kaleb Kanales still viable options.
The post earlier referencing Portland's time frames for finding/selecting a new coach holds steady with another vacancy filled from outside NBA. Personally, I see this as great news as the potential options still seem bright as opposed to the GM pool that we selected from. I'm ultimately impressed with Neil Olshey's ability to sell the team as well as Vince sells Sham-wows, however he has yet to actually accomplish any tasks. Olshey now get's the chance to make his pick from a qualified list of candidates (according to numerous NBA prognosticators) or take the interim tag off player favorite, Kanales.
Maybe the basketball God's are having a slight bit of pity on us and they're giving Olshey and company the chance to select a coach that can take hold and guide this team to the next level. However, the more likely scenario is we're going to get overzealous and hire the wrong guy for the job.
Bottom line from this hiring is that it leaves the field open for us to select from and doesn't paint Portland into a corner and force FO personnel into a decision that they don't want to make.
Thoughts?
