Eggers: Blazers GM Neil Olshey Explains Coaching Search Timeline

42
Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune reports the thought process of new Portland Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey when it comes to the decision to postpone the search for a new coach until after the 2012 NBA Draft on June 28. ------------------------------------- "The coaching candidates we are looking at are going to still be available (after the draft), including the one in-house (interim coach Kaleb Canales), whenever we start the process. It’s a transitional time for our franchise. When you’re so much into free agency and have two lottery picks, it’s really important for a new coach to know who he’s going to be coaching. "If we had 13 players under contract and it was an established roster, you’d say, let’s hire a coach first. But right now, there is so much uncertainty. We’re returning only three starters (if restricted free agent Nicolas Batum is signed). We don’t know what our roster is yet. It’s hard to say exactly what you’re looking for in a coach. And coaches are going to want to know what it is they’re dealing with, too. If you can’t give them an answer ... they’ll say, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’ They want to make sure it’s the right situation if they’re going to jump. "You want to start off on the right foot, where everybody’s sharing a common vision. The way to do that is get the bulk of our roster in place. Then you can ask (the coaching candidates), ‘What kind of style would you bring? Are you OK with young guys, or with veterans? What’s the goal?’ We’ll be able to say, ‘We still have some roster flexibility when you get here, but for the most part, this is the core you’ll be coaching.’" ------------------------------------- -- Ben Golliver | benjamin.golliver@gmail.com | Twitter
