I was talking to my wife about the fact that only 3 seasons ago we had a top 3 SG, one of the best PF's in the league, and the promise and hope of a dominate Greg Oden. Even if he was injured, we believed! Now i know teams rise and fall all the time, look at the Clippers but has any team EVER been subject to such devistating injuries to such key people(multiple players) that it completely altered the fate of said team? Has this ever happened?
Let me state i have done zero actual research but off the top of my head i cant think of any, from any sport. Football: well the seahawks were ravaged by injury for a few years pre-Pete Carroll but it was no where near as drastic or fate altering. but nothing really comes to mind in football. Baseball: Again cant think of anything as drastic or fate altering.
Basketball: This is where i really thought alot about the subject, baseball and football i just did a quick think through and nothing came to mind, in the NBA only is my personal thought criteria. Bill Walton in the 78 season, it was as drastic and fate altering but only one player went down......we had two. Drazen Petrovic dieing........he was the star for NJ at the time but i dont think that team had the promise portland once had. I.E. not as fate altering. David Robinson came to mind, when he went down for the year and S.A. was awful they landed Duncan so that was Hugely fate altering but it doesnt fit as Robinson came back and returned to elite form......ish.
Those were the main ones i could think of, all on all i could not think of a truely similar scenario. I personally dont think this has ever happened before and hope to god it never happens again.....to any team. Since i was lazy in my research i'd love to hear some other scenarios. Just had a thought, figured id get some input. Thanks
