Let's assume for a moment that both Deron Williams and Stan Van Gundy are realistic options for the Blazers this summer. BUT that Deron has heard enough from Dwight Howard that he won't sign if Stan Van Gundy is the coach.
Would you rather have Deron Williams or Stan Van Gundy if you could only have one?
I find it difficult to answer. Talent wins games and one of the top three point guards in the league is tough to match. Adding Deron Williams would turn around the team quickly. With him and LA in the mix, we could probably attract other free agents.
But at the same time, I think there is just as much of a talent disparity when it comes to coaches. The upper tier of coaches is so much better than the rest of the league that it isn't funny. And most of those great coaches aren't available. What SVG is able to accomplish with lesser talent makes me excited to think about how he could take a team with Dragic, Hickson, LA, Babbitt, Batum, a free-agent big, etc. and make every player better than they are now.
What do you think?
