So the news today is that Wilson Chandler was signed to a deal with Denver (who looks to be extremely promising now with Faried, Gallo, McGee, Aflalo, Chandler, and Lawson). Chandler got 5 years, 37 million. Averaged out to a little over 7 million a year. Granted, Denver wasn't really outbidding anybody at this point, but does that give us hope that we can expect the same or a similar number for Batum this summer? I'm cautiously optimistic that Batum doesn't get anything over about 9 million a year, but that doesn't mean some team won't try to steal him for stupid money based on the lack of quality wings that will be available this summer.
What do you guys think? I think Denver got a heck of a deal for Chandler. He's a real handful on offense and he's a good defender to boot. The benefit flip side of this is...Does this give Portland and other teams a baseline for a contract for Batum? If Chandler only got this much, is it unreasonable to assume that Batum is of the same caliber as Chandler, and thereby would it also be unreasonable for him to command a similar contract?
We see it all the time that guys in a new contract negotiation compare themselves to other guys around the league. Horford did it with Okafor, Aldridge did it with Bargnani. This *could* actually help Portland.
