Quick: Tentative Date For Greg Oden's Left Knee Procedure Set
Portland Trail Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan said that Blazers center Greg Oden would undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee as soon as doctors could treat minor blood clots in his left ankle that were discovered before he underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee last Friday.
Jason Quick of The Oregonian reports that the procedure has been tentatively scheduled for Feb. 13. That would be the tenth day after his right knee procedure. Buchanan said doctors had hoped that Oden would be able to undergo the second procedure in a 7-10 day window after the first one, if the ankle allowed.
The procedure on Oden's right knee was successful in removing loose articular cartilage. Buchanan said that Oden remains "out indefinitely" and admitted only that undergoing the procedures "doesn't increase the likelihood of him playing soon."

Morning to you too....
at least this was somewhat expected after the other one?
Get Well Greg, definitely disappointing. His bandwagon must have 2-3 ppl left on it…

Oden isn't done yet!
These scopes are low impact…takes a couple of weeks to get back to were he was before the first. Bandwagon or not Greg will have an impact on the floor either for us or someone else….
Sure the scope is low impact...
but you need to read what is being worked on. A scope to clear up some meniscus is one thing. A scope to work on the articular cartilage is another. If there is a lesion on the articular cartilage then the onset of OA should not be far behind. A man of his size is finished playing basketball effectively if he has osteoarthritis. For those of you questioning my reasoning this is coming from 3 years of graduate research focusing primarily on articular cartilage lesions and their correlation w/ OA.
I'm quite enjoying the Oden Bandwagon
just got myself a new jersey, matter of fact.
This wagon is plush interior, bangin system, plenty of space to spread out and the good lookin’ lady gets me nuts
still onboard
Walton and Bowie taught me all I need to know about the value of big men, and how they can return from injuries in their 20s and play productively into their 30s
Illgauskas, ditto
It sucks that Greg has only played 82 games for Portland—they obviously biffed that draft choice—as we’ll see again tonight. But what would suck even more would be to watch Oden dunking on LMA’s dome in the future

"Oden" as a situation?
Oden as a situation reminds me of The Mayan Calendar. Everyone sits around with a theory as to what is going to happen, and what it all means, and the truth is? It might all be nothing. We basically just sit back and see what happens.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
Unlike with the Mayan Calendar, my hope is that Oden doesn't amount to "nothing"
As far as the Mayan Calendar is concerned, my theory is that the high priest in charge of calculating it called it a day or a workweek after crunching out two full long cycles and said “that’s far enough into the future. Until I get my overtime paid, that’s all folks”. Nobody believing in that theory could yet explain to me why the world didn’t end already in ca. 1224 or 1618 when the last cycles ended. Or why Mayan civilization already went into decline around 900, and the Spanish also came in the middle of one to end things for good (or bad). And it’s better to predict the end of the world won’t come and then claim “see, I told you so” instead of the end happening and then saying “see, I told you so” when it won’t matter anyway. And there are so many different calendars and ways to count the passing of time around the world it’s not even funny, so I give as much weight to the Gregorian calendar as to any number of others.
As for the end Oden, who knows how to calculate that one… If 2007 was Anno Odeni, we might see the sad end of an era (as Dave pointed out before) in 2012, or the beginning of a new one.
the bigger point here is nobody can predict the future with the exception of where astronomical objects will be if their relationships are first calculated properly
but the end of the world? C’mon folks how long are we gonna believe in this stuff?
The only way somebody will predict the end of the world is if they find an asteroid that is undoubtedly going to collide with us with no way for us to stop it and we can say exactly when it will hit us and with absolute certainty how cataclysmic the event will be, but even then we are talking about predicting it out a matter of days, months or years, not centuries.
You may now return to your regularly scheduled Oden injury post.

Any sense in trying to trade him?
Do you think management has tried to shop him? Or better yet, do you think anyone would bother trading for him when he is unrestricted anyway? This whole situation is so frustrating. Its hard not to have some incredibly sour feelings toward this guy especially since these injuries are not his fault…but still, I can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel.
Since he'll be unrestricted and now pretty unlikely to play a game this season, I doubt any team trades anything of value for him
If they wanted to shop him, that time was at least a year or two ago.
He also has to agree to any trade
so it makes things tough.
there also has to be someone to trade for in the 1.5 million range that's worth more value to us than a potentially healthy Oden

We have gone on without him
True we need another 7 footer big body for rebounding and passing out which I wouldn’t mind at all being Greg, but in reality, the salary we are paying him is minimal and trading him now would be senseless, unless we got a monster deal for him, which isn’t likely to happen.
What have we got to lose by keeping him until we find out?

I was disappointed when I heard...
that people at the Denver game last night actually booed the poor kid. Yep, I can see him wanting exactly this scenario to happen…mission accomplished!
Seriously people…be disappointed in the situation, but give the guy a break. His entire life is laying in shattered pieces right next to his ruined knees… Give the guy some credit; when the announcement about the “setback” was made right after he signed his $8+mil Qualifying Offer, he took a new deal all the way down to $1.5mil. He’s not a bad guy, just saddled with very poor luck. Don’t hate on him for that…

Why would people boo him? Has he wronged the team or fans? He’s not Darius Miles, folks.

I was at the game...when did they boo him? There was a boo session a few times for Rudy
which I thought was just stupid…but Greg? I know there was one booing session where my friend and I were like..why are they booing .??? We didn’t know. Assumed it was Rudy since they later booed when Rudy was on the floor.
Did they show Greg on the Jumbotron or something? Greg wasn’t even at the game was he?
by Natsthecat on Feb 5, 2012 11:08 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
It was during the Super Bowl predictions
It was completely odd. I was already wondering why people were booing Rudy so much (I didn’t think he was worth it) and didn’t cheer Andre more when he first came in.
But then they had the super bowl predictions and I heard boos for Greg. It’s one thing if the guy was sitting around having given up and just looking to collect a paycheck. But the guy’s been trying to get back and here’s a newsflash: he can’t switch out his body for a new one. If you’re going to boo him should one boo Kevin Pritchard/Paul Allen for drafting him?
I have always loved the spirit and energy of PDX crowds (for all sports) but it was one of the first times I thought (some of) our crowd sounded ridiculous.
Benefit of the doubt and say Oden's choice was booed?
and not Oden?
Law of Logical Argument
Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
Nope
I’d like to think that, but the reaction was immediate and his choice IIRC was the same as a few others who weren’t booed.
yeah..come to think of it, there were some boos when his photo came up
forgot about that. I think Oden wasn’t even at the game though so no harm done.
I don't understand people or fan's
I can see booing LeBron James, but booing a Man that is facing lifelong dreams crumpling, is so stupid and cold. Hating on anybody that is suffering from injury doesn’t make sense at all.
hg
Booing him...
…was absolutely STUPID. Disappointing that Portland fans would be so short sighted. Whatever you think about Oden, he doesn’t deserve to be boo’ed.
Blame in part “some” local media that have pre-emptively decided to raise the Oden is Done as a Blazer flag.
But mostly blame some short sighted fans.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
if my life was "in shattered pieces" after "earning" 20+ million dollars
you got much bigger problems in your life than not being able to play ball
I don't know
I’m younger than Roy, and I’m about to the point that I can’t play ball anymore. I may not play quite as much as an NBA player, but I spend far more of my free time playing sports of some kind than anything else.
I may not make 20+ million, but I have plenty of food, and I’ve wasted plenty of money on expensive gadgets I don’t really need. Silly of me feeling bad about losing my body, after all some people can’t even get water on a daily basis!

The lack of sympathy that people have for NBA players with physical ailments is appalling.
Imagine what it would be like if someone said “Oh, boo hoo, Mr. Microsoft had cancer. He’s still alive. I’ll go through chemo and radiation for $13 billion and a yacht.” While that statement is a lot colder as a matter of degree, it’s the same bad, insensitive, eat-the-rich mentality-induced “logic” (I use quotes, because it’s not logical, at all) that people use to justify insensitivity towards Greg Oden’s struggles.
It’s one thing to say you wanna cut our losses with Oden. It’s one thing to call him an injury bust. But to be so callous as to even think (let alone verbalize) that making a fortune is worth a young man’s health….that’s just wrong man.
I hope things work out for you, Batumshakalaka, and that you can keep doing the things you love for a long time!

I didn't actually play high school basketball so I can't speak for them
But ask any serious football player in high school and they will tell you straight up that “Football is Life”. Kind of hard to explain, but most of the seniors at our school were broken down and crying when they finished their last, possibly ever, football game. Of course, it helps that unless you take state your last game will be a loss.
There’s a reason people talk about their old days playing sports and try to live vicariously through their children. I can’t explain why this is so important to some people, but it is.
by Batumshakalaka on Feb 6, 2012 1:08 PM PST up reply actions
Oh,
And imagine going through that, then college, then making it to the pros and getting all that fame and acknowledgement, then maybe even becoming as good or better than all those players you idolized as a kid. Then, everything crashes down on you. Your body fails, you watch your team struggle and there’s nothing you can do to help, fans hate you because you are hurting your own team at that point, and you are even ridiculed on national TV for being useless.
Sounds to me like Oden is in his own personalized hell. I can’t see him just giving up everything that he takes pride in himself, simply because he made some money.

I was there. didn't seem like they booed him .
They only had his image up on the jumbo for a few seconds. Must have been pretty limited. probably 2-3 guys centered around o- live reporters… I have seen him get cheered when the show him on the bench so far this year.
fans booed and ridiculed Walton in 1974-75
and a writer said Bill had a “brain spur”
the more things change…Walton didn’t have a choice, he had to play in PDX in ’76-77
Greg will have a choice in July, and many “Blazer fans” will be happy to see him leave
not this one, Portland’s championship hopes will walk out the door when Oden does

Anyway...the guy has some serious body issues.
He’s done well getting some good pay. I hope he’s invested his money well. I think he may be done..blood clots in his ankles???!!!!
That cannot be a sign of good things to come. Blood clots travel and become pulmonary emboli or cause heart attacks or strokes…the blood clots in ankles…and he’s 24…
has he had any platelet rich plasma therapy? I wonder if there is any correlation between that procedure and blood clots?
Still, I have to agree. The arthroscopic surgery doesn’t concern me that much at all, the blood clots are not good at all.

meaning BLOOD CLOTS...which is different than blood CLOTTING.
You do want blood to clot after surgery. If not, most likely you will die fairly soon. Blood CLOTS are a different story.
Oh But the biggest fear of any surgery is blood clots.
I had to have blood thinning shots in my stomach, two a day for two weeks when I was reabilitating from knees surgery.

They found a minor blood clot
in his left ankle when they were doing a scope on his right knee and decided to wait a week or 10 days to do the scope on his left knee depending on the clot.
hg
by BBK on Feb 5, 2012 9:58 PM PST up reply actions
I'm still confused. Are you saying that the blood clot they just found is a result of the scope they did on his other knee on Friday?
Because I thought they found the clot the morning of the scope on his right knee, before they had done the scope of his right knee. My interpretation was that they had initially wanted to scope both knees the same day but after finding the clots they decided to only scope his right knee for now.
I know they have said they will do the left knee scope in ten days time from the right knee procedure, but have they said exactly what they are doing about those clots?

Natsthecat,
thats exactly what I said about this. Blood clots in the ankles and he’s 24 ?!
Get a player exception for a roster spot already and another big. How many games has he already missed ?
How about that Nico last night !!
Go Blazers !!!!
just win baby !
BBK, Greg didnt have a procedure/surgery on the leg that had the clot.
That’s the point. It’s still too much, after too much. 4+ years. The guy only has 2 knees.
just win baby !
Yes he did
he has had surgery on both his knees. the left knee, the one with the blood clot was the one that is being rehabbed.
hg
by BBK on Feb 5, 2012 5:43 PM PST up reply actions
Not recently BBK,
before this procedure, how long had it been since Greg had knee surgery or a medical procedure done on the leg the clot was in ? The left one.
The most recent scope was on the right. Greg should be doing rehab on both knees apparently.
When is the last time Greg was in a cast ? Over a year ago ?
So Greg just started rehabbing? Now had a clot ?
That’s my point Blazer fans. Get an exeception already !
just win baby !
I am not arguing on getting an exemption though
I think that would be a good Idea.
BTW, I knew a woman that died from a blood clot after being in a cast for 9 month and got a blood clot as soon as she started exercising her knee, and it all came from the knee surgery she had.
Many people has died from blood clots after domestic violence and gang bangs. That is why injuries can be dangerous. That is why many patients are kept over night for observation after a small injury.
This is a small clot, IMO, from his surgery and will be taken care of since they already discovered it.

Someday soon we'll all look back on the "Oden period" with a certain nostalgia...
at least, that’s where this appears to be heading. Either he’s medically unable to resume playing or he plays for someone else. One can always hope for a storybook ending….
Best of luck to GO, but.....
I for one will be relieved when we finally admit failure & let him go. This schtick got old a long time ago.
