If not Greg...who?
Presuming the team does not blow it up and start over the team is in need of a defensive minded center that they can pair with LMA. Greg (if he can ever get healthy) is th best option for this type of a player...even if his 75% of what he could have been. Greg brings the added advantage of a power offensive game, which further helps LMA as other teams have to account for greg (where as they can ignore guys like Pryzbilla).
Camby is great at the moment but even if they sign him to another contract, his contributions will be limited as he gets older. If the window is now then fine, but LMA has at least 6 or more years of championship type play.
Joel Freeland is a guy they have talked about bringing over. He has he size to play the 5, but he seems more like a 4. In either case he is a good all-around big who would be great as the third big off the bench, but not the defensive rebounder type that would really compliment LMA.
Free Agents,
Besides guys like Ian Mahinmi and Ronny Turiaf most of the guys who have any potential are RFAs and will cost quite a bit to pry away from their teams, probably cost more than they are worth
Rookies
Besides Nate’s reluctance to play young guys, there really aren’t that many 5s available when the blazers are to draft that will have the impact needed to take this team to the next level...although there are some intreging talents (Mason Plumlee, Arnett Moultrie, etc.)
Greg should come cheap, and besides, they only dress 13 per game anyway. Greg’s potential (however distant it may be) is enough to warrant a roster spot...IMHO

A good site to see up coming free agents is
http://www.hoopsworld.com/2012-nba-free-agents
Now at the Center position I’d go after these guys, also i put how much you might how to pay :
Roy Hibbert 10-11 mill
Brook Lopez 8-10 mill
JaVale McGee 7-9 mill
Omer Asik 8-9 mill.
There is guys I think we could get at 5, some maybe harder then others to get. Also think about playing two 4’s you could get:
Jason Thompson 6-7 mill
Marreese Speights 6-7 mill
Ronny Turiaf 3-4mill
Boris Diaw 7-8 (Camby like passing ability)
Kenyon Martin 6-7 mill ( also good passer)
now drafting we will be some where around 18-23 range so big men as of right now we could get.
Mason Plumlee PF 21 years old; 6’11"; 234 lbs
Mike Moser PF21 years old; 6’8"; 230 lbs. (Millsap)
Patric Young C 20 years old; 6’9"; 247 lbs. (better version of Bismack)
Arnett Moultrie PF/C 21 years old; 6’11"; 220 lbs.
Festus Ezeli C 22 years old; 6’11"; 255 lbs.(Greg Oden lite)
Kevin Jones PF 22 years old; 6’8"; 250 lbs. (Chuck Hayes 2nd round)
Finally your best bet is Joel Freeland. You have to get that guy over here at all cost (most he can make is almost 2 mill).
I don't see Moser as a Millsap-esque big man
He’s more likely to develop into a Shawn Marion/Gerald Wallace-type perimeter player. It’s not a great comparison, but that’s the best that can be done at this point.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
your
top 4 aren’t going anywhere, they are restricted free agents and teams don’t usually let those guys go very often…about you’re only option would be to vastly overspend, which hurts the team in the long run…so no dice.
The next group isn’t much better, the only guy worth anything long term is Thompson, who, (once again) is a RFA and will be very expensive.
As for the rookies, Plumlee, Moultrie, and Ezeli are interesting, but I would argue the team should take one of these guys regardless of Greg’s status with the team.
They need at least 2 pfs and 2 centers going forward at least. Aldridge and Freeland cover 2 of those spots, Camby is a short term solution, a Rookie is possible solution down the road…none of that excludes Oden being on the team, especially when one starts looking at the cost/risk issues if they decide to go after a RFA.

You’ve set your sights high. Follow up question though:
Are you satisfied with our guard situation?

Freeland isn't going to make this team a contender. And to get these players
we have to look at what we’d have to give – in order to get. It’s not free to play. Roy and Oden once had the star power to get something back. Losing that value is one very big hole to fill.
I suspect that I’m closer to the blow it and start over school, since I can’t see how we get to contention eventually any other way.
Right now
I am wondering if a trade with miami could be done. Blazers geting chalmers – for his defense obviously – and the rights on jarvis varnado, and miami geting felton (or other pieces, like matthews but they would need a pg).
Freeland is not going to impact the team like a fit oden would, but he would be very nice 2 punch threat along with alridge. Defensively, he needs to keep improving though. I still view him as a potential przybilla with a real offensive game, not something to underrate.
And freeland would be pretty cheap, something to take into account when thinking about the backcourt.
I dont think diaw is an option here, people would get mad at him because he is pretty inconsistent even though he would be a good addition defensively.
I would also try to get seraphin, he could bring some intimidation, and since the wizard dont seem to value him much, he should not be very hard to get (in terms of trade bait).
Basically, i would try to go the cheap way to fix the frontcourt, saving some cap to land a top sg or pg if something can’t be done before the trade deadline with wallace & or matthews.
Seraphin would be nice
he hasn’t done much yet, but he seems to have the pieces.

Freeland would help
He is long and has good big man skills. He would easily become the first big off the bench next year.
I agree Oden still warrants a roster spot. 29 other teams will be looking at him as well. Regardless of the constant stream of negative press directed at Greg around here, if we don’t pursue him someone else will sign him…
And how is that a bad thing?
Dude is never going to play basketball again and if he does, it’s iffy at best how long he stays healthy or how well he’ll contribute. I had high hopes for him maybe a year ago but now, forget it. Let him walk, it’s time to move on.
In order to remain competitive, and without depending on Oden
Samuel Dalembert and/or Kris Humphries are the best semi-realistic options. Working out a trade for Anderson Varejao is another possibility, but Cleveland probably won’t move him unless you blow them away. Tyler Zeller is a solid draft option.
Outside of these players, I don’t see any realistic options that would keep up above average for long.

Center piece...
I would really like to see them push hard for Brook Lopez.
Nate is always going to prefer a half court style offense so we should look for more a a “twin towers” line-up a-la Memphis. The guards don’t seem to be able to get it done and we’re never going to sign a Chris Paul like point guard so I think we should focus our resources into finding a center like Lopez.
If we couldn’t get him then so be it, but at some point before they decide on signing back Batum or Wallace, they’re going to have a lot of cap room to play with so they might as well at least make a push.
Not bad
I don’t love Korver, but Nate might like him (role player, no upside, established skill set).
LMA/Asik/Freeland/2012 Rookie isn’t too bad, good mix of skill and certainly a good age group. Still, I think there is room on the team for Oden
LMA/Asik/Freeland/Oden/Rookie…makes me more comfortable.
Good post though!

Here's a clue: Oden, scrambled, spells DONE
His grandma is more likely to play hoops again.
BTW, I have been saying Oden is a fraud since 2007. We got punked.
Ok I changed my signature. Do you like it better now?
If we pawn off Gerald for 4 or 5 draft picks..
I would deal all of those and ours to get Anthony Davis.

Freeland is the best available answer
I expect he’ll be avg at best defensively but would mesh perfectly with LMA at the offensive end. Both have games that extend from under basket to about 20 feet meaning both can post and spread the floor for the other to post.
the truth hurts. fox news is painless
NEDO GERG
it’s Greg’s evil twin, who has yet to miss a game.

Oden is still our only hope of becoming a perennial championship contendor
Like it or not.
LaMarcus "Macrohard" Aldridge
Sad to see everyone write Oden off completely.
These latest scopes on his knees aren’t indicative of any permanent problems, they just put him back some more. This is good for the Blazers because if they still believe he can contribute, they’ll be able to get him at a good price this off-season.
