Blazers F LaMarcus Aldridge 2012 NBA All-Star Friday Sound Bites
Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge addressed a small group of reporters at the Hilton Orlando on Friday, as part of a media availability for the 2012 Western Conference All-Star team.
Here are a few quick soundbytes.
His height
I was always tall. I was 5-foot-11 in sixth grade. That's pretty tall. In seventh grade I was like 6-foot-4 and I was 6-foot-8 in eighth grade. I went from trying to learn how to dribble and shoot threes into keeping more down low. I definitely changed my game.
Loss of Greg Oden
It was tough. We have to deal with it. We've dealt with adversity over the last few years. We've gotten kind of used to getting bad news. I want to get him back healthy but we have to keep fighting.
Do you look over your shoulder because of all the center injuries?
We have a standing joke: don't ever call me center. Every center goes out. I'm always a power forward no matter what. Even if I start at center, I'm a power forward.
Favorite basketball movies
"Above The Rim" and "He Got Game." Good basketball stories and good actors.
Thoughts on being an All-Star
It kind of feels surreal right now. I don't really feel like I'm here. But I am. It definitely means more to me now that I actually made it after being snubbed. After last year, it means a lot more to me.
The excitement of getting in outweighs the low of being snubbed. I feel like when you're actually in, you're like, 'Man, I made it. I'm finally here.' The snub kind of went away after awhile.
Who has given you congratulations that you didn't expect?
Dirk [Nowitzki] came up to me and said that he was happy to see me here. He had spoken out and said I should be here. I thought that was big.
His schedule on Friday
I left Dallas at 7 a.m. so I had to get up at 6 a.m. I got here at 10:30 a.m. Landed, got in the car, was coming to the hotel, my driver took the wrong exit so we had to loop back around. Added an extra 15 minutes to the drive. Checked into the hotel, had to run and change, had to run down and do pictures and media. From that to the player's meetings, to this, and from this to the day of service.
Here's a picture of Aldridge with NBA commissioner David Stern from his day of service, via the Trail Blazers.
Reaction to potential Joel Przybilla signing
That's big. We went from last year not having any bigs to this year having a lot of bigs. That's big. He's a great defender and a great teammate. That's big having him back.
Do you think Jamal Crawford will remain as a starter?
I don't know what Nate [McMillan] is thinking. Whenever you win by whatever we won by, even without three of their guys, you have to try it out. I don't see him not starting.
(Aldridge was referring to a 40-point victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.)
Did you ever hear from Brandon Roy regarding the All-Star selection?
I did.
What did he say?
Just congratulations.
Text message or phone call or?
It doesn't matter.
Contacting Team USA about getting back into the program
Yeah, they had invited me to two other things previously. I had some big family things going on so I had to turn it down. I think they got the impression that I didn't want to do anything with USA Basketball. I contacted them to say it's not that way. I had something going on those years but I do want to play and I'll be back.
Thoughts on Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point game
You're asking me? I only have 42 points as my career high! That's crazy good. That's way up there. [Kobe Bryant's 81] was amazing. Wilt having 100 is unheard of. That's up there when you're dreaming you do something like that. I don't see anybody doing that any more.
Zach Lowe of SI.com had a few Aldridge notes and quotes as well.

What was the Wilt question about?
Just NBA topics from a hat?
Johnson, Johnson, Smith, Smith, Thomas, Williams, and Babbitt: the Blazer's law firm.
Probably.
Other potential questions in the hat included, “Do you have a favorite Chuck Nevitt moment?”, “Can you recite a Darryl Dawkins poem?”, and “Can you mimmick Jack Sikma’s funky shooting form?”
March 2nd is the 50th anniversary of the 100 point game.
There is some news going around about it and there is a book and either a movie or documentary coming out.
AND that's also MY 50th birthday..
Plus, as a kid growing up in L.A. when he was on the Lakers, he was my favorite player before I even knew that. Imagine that.
I'm curious why it matters if Roy texted/emailed/called/sent smoke signals/carrier pidgeons/etc

It doesn't...
…that’s why LMA said that.

Aldrdige getting the nod made me far happier
than Roy ever did. i liked Roy’s game but I love Aldridge as a player on and off the court…
People have been brutally unfair to him over the years calling him soft and weak and so on, when all he has ever done is fill the roll his coach asked him to fill (see Dave’s mailbag post on this issue and our current inconsistency as a team).
All those season’s of second fiddle ball to Roy at 18-8. That is what coach wnated and Aldridge delivered with AMAZING consistency.
Coach started asking for more of a post game and Aldridge came back with a post game after the summer.
Aldridge seems to have a great ethic and team attitude and seems like a humble man. love him.

From what I've heard
Brandon is a very private guy, and was even before he retired. I don’t think he even told his teammates he was married until after the ceremony, and he definitely kept his head down during the lockout. I think at some point he probably asked guys not to talk about him with the media and they’ve respected that.
"I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I'm exciting."
- Jamal Crawford
A private nba star was refreshing
Outside his public whining that was from (probable) frustration with his deterioration.

Not without Martell Webster's help, at least
Brandon is one person who is still ruing the Babbitt trade.

I'm sure he is sick of people asking about GO as we are
I haven’t checked the soundbytes yet from Durant (about Greg) or James’ of LMA.

What’s his favorite basketball movie?
Thoughts on Chamberlains 100 pt game?
Really? Did they let the local High Schools have a media presence?

That picture of Stern arm and arm with LMA...
would be touching if Stern wasn’t trying to jam a was of money into LMA’s pocket. Doesn’t he know that LMA NEVER takes a dive!
is Stern 4 foot 2?

I <3 LA !! Always have.
He’s the only reason I’m watching the all star popularity contest Sunday. His answers to the same stupid questions are great. He’s grown before our eyes from that skinny Texas kid.
Do your thing big man !
just win baby !

Here’s the schedule for his segment on Portlandia (times are Pacific). Portlandia can be hit-and-miss, so I’m crossing my fingers that the skit isn’t lame. The promo was pretty good — LMA did a great job with his two lines!

yup.
and even Flight of the Conchords fell off considerably after the first season, which I thought was quite good. Season 2, ugh, what a mess.

Yeah, all of the ideas for the sketches are great
but the execution and direction of the skits often become pointless…
it is the problem with sketch comedy in general, it is more fun for the people playing the roles than it ever is for the audience.
"What and how much had I lost by trying to do only what was expected of me instead of what I myself had wished to do?"
— Ralph Ellison (Invisible Man)
Yeah, sketch comedy skits are often relatable to a small segment of the viewing audience.
Watching Portlandia, it’s funny at times — while I like both Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein — but the bits are hit and miss.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
became like that as well…it was fun when the entire audience particpated in the moment but once groups of people started playing the roles it only became fun for them.
I was a Boy Scout as a child and kids got into doing sketches for campfire entertainment. The kids IN the sketches had a blast everyone else was bored stiff. That is why when i became the leader at these events i got rid of most of the sketches and went back to singing songs together, more fun for everyone…everyone is involved…
Why i am such a big fan of the Timbers Army

I think they used tin can walkie talkies or maybe they used semaphore flags.

its been cloudy but i think it was smoke signals.

You gotta read between the lines.
LaMarcus slept in till an hour before his flight left town. Someone was keeping him asleep. Why would someone do that? Because they had access to his dreams, and they were using his dreams to plant information that he would not have otherwise received (naturally).
Thus, we can reasonably conclude that Brandon incepted his congratulations into LaMarcus’ dreams while he slept.

I guess the don't believe in socks in Canada
Gross.
Also, bad eye love and a forced smile from Nash. He’s definitely not coming to Portland.
Your comment is poopy.
Also, (I have) bad eye(s) and a forced smile from Nash.
There. fixed it for you.
#52--------I believe in Greg Oden
I gots 20/10, baby. Literally and figuratively.
When I smile, it’s genuine… Truth sometimes sounds poopy, especially from people who are naturally more concerned with what is being communicated, rather than how those those thoughts make other people feel.
I know we have a lot of Nash fans here, but I don’t like him and I’d rather not see him on the team. I tried to express that humorously by satiring the obsessive analysis of body language and reading between the lines that sometimes happens at BE, e.g. ‘Nic has his arms crossed defensively in the huddle, thus Nate must have attacked him during the timeout…’
I think we can all agree that shoes without socks is just plain nasty. Right up there with going commando, or beds without sheets. I think Camby would keel over if he had to share a locker room with Nash.
...and then I joked with Nash about the shooting percentages of our guards... Jamal: Hehe, wait, not funny!

I love LaMarcus, but...
It was pretty lame to make those references to being snubbed last year. The classy thing would be to say, “All I can do is play my best and leave the choosing to others. It’s an honor to be chosen this year.”
Talking about being snubbed reeks of entitlement.
"Tom Lawson McCall, Governor or Oregon, invites you to visit . . . Washington, Idaho, Nevada, or Afghanistan." --Pair of bumper stickers on our baby blue 1966 Plymouth Fury III when I was growing up in Portland, BC (Before Championship).
i thought that too at first
but the question is is little too paraphrased. the reporter actually mentioned him being snubbed and asked him how it felt. LA didnt bring it up on his own
