Poll: Who Should Be Waived?
Portland is bringing back fan favorite center Joel Przybilla. The merits can be discussed in that post. What I am wondering is, who do you think should be given the boot to make room? Here are some options:
Greg Oden: Won't be playing this year anyway (like Pendergraph last year). We'd give up his Bird Rights though and it would pretty much guarantee the media will be talking about us giving up on him. Plus we won't have even that 0.001% that he comes back as a dominate center for us.
Chris Johnson: Przybilla has had breakfasts bigger than Johnson. It would make some sense since we are bringing on another big man. His energy and athleticism make it tougher to part with him, even if he rarely sees the court anyway.
Armon Johnson: He has seen the court the least of any healthy player this year. I remember him shining in his first game and having some high hopes for him. He hasn't really seemed to pan out though. Still, he is in his second year and possesses a lot of athleticism and a good work ethic (not to mention we put over $1mil of PAM to acquire him).
Other: Everyone else is either a rotation player (or borderline, like Craig Smith) or has remaining years on their contracts. Still, we could technically waive someone else.
One other thing I'd like to throw out there. We could trade away one of these guys to a team with less than 15 players and cap-space or an exception, or even do a 2-for-1, though that seems less likely. Taking on someone like one of the Johnsons would be only a small risk.

I know, but I stick up for my, uh, "friends"
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Armon is the most logical choice.
Nolan Smith is going to take any minutes that might have gone to Armon and with Crawford playing a lot of point I just don’t see how Armon would ever see game time.
Plus we have a glutton of guards and a dearth of bigs, it makes sense to cut a guard when adding a big.
The smarter you are, the more likely you are to be tripping balls at any given moment.

Agreed
Though maybe we could do this: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7w8c87z
Perhaps get the option to switch 2nd round picks this year?
I agree that Armon is the most logical choice
and in my mind it’s not even close.

The only reason I could see is that Oden presents 1.5 million in filler (start March 1st when his restriction expires), while Armon only represents 760k
Of course Greg would have to agree to a deal, though now he has little reason not to.
Storyteller said he doesn't even see it as close, though
That doesn’t seem significant enough for Armon to blow Oden out of the water. Maybe Storyteller’s just really optimistic about Oden’s potential to come back?
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
I'm baffled
When this post, w/ poll, came out, I immediately voted Oden.
I thought nothing of it; nothing else made sense to me. Armon is still an active player, while Greg isn’t going to return until after next season. So, my thought was best case ‘13-14 season returning. At which I lost any concept of ’keeping’ him. When he’s healthy, match any offer that he gets.
I understand that Armon is signed at the min, and we can always resign him at min, regardless of cap. But that alone doesn’t make my decision. The salary diff/filter doesn’t change what we can replace it with….
And, as HailOden points out, Storyteller states “its not even close.”
I spent a night trying to come up with rational for that statement. I accept that Storyteller most likely understands the rules of salary/CBA at a much greater level than I do, and as such I, personally, would love to understand the rational….
Honestly, I just don’t get not picking Greg as the drop….. Storyteller? cap holds? I’m grasping at straws at this point….
chris johnson has hardly seen the court though, and even less now with pryz. makes sense to cut a player at Pryz's position.

We should do a 2 for 1 trade
But if we have to waive one of them, let it be Armon.
He makes less money than Oden, which we are still on the hook for. He is absolutely buried behind Crawford, Felton, Smith and Williams. If Oden comes back, he is a game changer. If Armon comes in, he is a mediocre back-up. Chris Johnson is cheap and can provide minutes this year, who’s to say Pryz will even stay healthy?
by Sir.Ludo on Feb 22, 2012 3:51 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
If Pryz doesn't stay healthy this year...
We’d be better off playing Armon at center rather than Oden, for what it’s worth.

i'd be happy for us to move on from the oden saga.
i really think it would be good for him and for us. he’ll still get paid and rehabbed, with zero expectations. when was the last time he was seen happy? less pressure could only be relieving to him. for us, we could finally just let it go and move on. it’s clear that he won’t be playing any role for any team any time soon. dragging him around with us is a drag we could do better without. best of luck, greg!
If it had to be anybody I would say oden
but, I would much rather try trading armon cj and babbit for a decent backup guard or pg or even picks. (note: I now believe that blazers should NEVER use draft picks again, only trade them for legit proven players.

For all the flak we've given Babbit
I’m surprised he hasn’t at least come up in the conversation.

I voted for Babbitt
To me he is the least likely to ever become a rotation player (well maybe except Oden, but if Oden becomes a rotation player, he most assuredly becomes a great player).
by The Cactus Leaguer on Feb 22, 2012 4:22 PM PST up reply actions
Yes, but I don't care
I don’t think he is capable of breaking into the rotation, and also he plays a position where it’s much easier to find a solid backup than the other players in question (PG and C).

For financial reasons, it'd be stupid to waive Luke Babbitt.
If the Trail Blazers want Babbitt gone, then look to include him in a trade as a throw-in. That way, he’s off the books for next season.

For basketball reasons, it’s stupid to keep him. That’s why I voted “other”.

gotta be Oden
he has absolutely no value whatsoever. Even if Joel wasn’t coming back Oden should still be cut.
I think it just depends on the FO plans for trading
and what that trade could be. If it was the right trade we may not need to waive anyone. Or if we did it could be someone aquired in the trade.
Seems the only one without trade “value” is Oden but if we could sign him for next to nothing for 3 years (I’m sure I’m being booed by people for writing that) – If it doesn’t necessarily hurt cap space to have him around and not playing there is still potential (however minuscule). I guess the only thing he’s hurting is roster space – hence the real possibility.
if no trade involves any of these guys;
CJ I’d like to keep around for a just in case moment or as a momentum shifter similar to that game vs the Mavs last year when he messed up Dirks flow…It’s not much but it’s something. and the more centers the merrier at this point. And I like the guy.
Right now Felton (when he’s starting) is sucking so bad that I’d rather see Armon, honestly.
Everyone says Babbitt has potential…but…does he? does he really have potential?
I say Babbitt.
Waive Greg and include Felton hidden in Greg's baggy pants
So that way as we waive Oden we’ll secretly be waiving Felton too. Felton can hide in one of Oden’s pants legs. Oden already has to use a cane. Nobody will notice that he is limping just a little bit more than usual.
Gosh, what an ingenius plan. I hope they do it. Nobody will even notice that we waived Felton. Next game, though, people will look around and say, “Where’s Raymond?” Little will they know, Raymond got secretly waived!
Ok I changed my signature. Do you like it better now?
Is that a Felton in your pants or are you just happy to see me???
I just had to.

Maybe because as disappointed as we all are in his Injury status so far in his career
He has the Talent to be one of the greatest ever
Johnson on the other hand does not have the talent to be a 15th man on an NBA roster
thats why you keep him

Oden is done. I doubt the dude will ever be able to walk without a cane and a limp. His body is disintegrating.
Time to be real.
Ok I changed my signature. Do you like it better now?
they wouldn't
they are supposedly shopping Beaubois though, and Hayward is pretty “meh”. This might not be a bad base to start a trade.

I think Dallas is the winner
I would think they’d give up Roddy B to save on that contract of Haywood’s. No reason for Minny to do it. Pretty good deal for GSW if they’re in to that sort of thing. As good as they are, I am not sure I want two shooting guards in point guard bodies coming in with no true point guard left on the roster.
And why does Minneapolis want to pay Hawood 43+ mil?
just asking?

On the subject of Babbit
Am I the only one that’s noticed the kid really hustles on rebounds, and has become a little more confident with his shooting stroke. He looks less lost out there than he used to. Not to say that he’s anywhere near to contributing on a regular basis, as he’s definitely still a defensive liability in that he’s unable to read switches and rotate on the perimeter. I’m just saying he’s improved, and shouldn’t take as much crap as he does on the board.
yup
agreed. Babbitt has clearly improved. Still needs to get quicker.

This is by far the best poll ive seen on here that
a. wasnt on the front page by Dave or Ben or Timmay! or someone
b. had this many votes, possibly the most ive seen on a poll not on the front page
c. had no recs even though this subject is important and impending
Great poll and post dude, im gonna rec it in hopes we can keep this thing up a little longer. This is great subject matter worthy of discussion. All the trade talk is beginning to bore me, especially the fact that we dont even know if a trade will happen. We KNOW someone has to be waived, and a conclusion will be announced soon.

Does have a lot of votes
They should start paying for votes in polls, kind of like clicks on Google ads ;-)
When that happens
I’m posting a poll that asks simply “Can I have some money now?”

Trade Babbit and Armon...
Armon could get playing time somewhere else and Babbit is weak sauce.
This is either a joke
or you are referring to Lyndon Johnson as a basketball player. Either way, pretty funny!

Even if it should be Oden
it will be Armon Johnson. They will probably resign Oden, which is just ridiculous to think about.
I voted Armon Johnson also
because I thought it would be heartless to waive Oden at this time….then again, he might feel relief from the completion of it.
I think we should get to vote as many times as we want...
you know, like the all star ballot. If we could, I’d probably vote for Oden about 20 times. Could be a stupid move, but I’m so ready to move on from this sad, ongoing drama…
Play the hand you're dealt
1. Armon Johnson cost a 2nd round pick and unspecified dollars to get that pick. He looked a bit promising for a 2nd rounder, but with Felton, Crawford, EWilliams, and N.Smith ahead of him … he won’t play, he doesn’t have value outright in a trade (compared to others), and it’s “cheap” to do it. Maybe he catches on elsewhere, but he gets paid.
2. Bigs on the team are needed. Cut little before cutting a big.
3. With Oden, plenty of money has been put in the pot … wasted to a fair extent. But it did look like a huge pot for the Blazers. Now, even having to pull a huge suck out on the river card, the investment is small … with a payoff that is SIGNIFICANT. Put the chips in (minimum contract for next season, work with him, great PR, etc.) and if it pays off, great!
If it doesn’t pay off, the Blazers lose a 15th man who was going to sit in street clothes behind the bench next season—no matter who it was.
