Should the Blazers Waive Greg Oden?
A few years ago Jeff Pendergraph's season ending knee injury forced the Blazers into waiving him for a roster spot. This year Oden's surgery will leave the Blazers with a similar dilemma. The Blazers cannot apply for a disabled player exception as the deadline to apply for one has passed. Should the Blazers cut ties and waive him for a free agent (Patty Mills) or should the Blazers keep him for loyalty purposes?

Keep him so he still has access to the doctors and training staff.
It would be really cold hearted to slice him up one day and dump him the next. Stay classy, Portland.

I think the deadline for getting that exception has passed
if we want to sign someone like Przy, I think we have to cut Greg

After we waive Armon Johnson.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here
But I think waiving AJ would be a huge mistake. One the Blazers would ultimately reret

I think we get an injured player exception anyway if he's out for the year,
but I don’t quite know the rules for that.

I think the injured player exception must be put in for by late January,
so I think we missed out on it.

maybe that changes because the season is shorter
I think I heard somewhere about us using it for Oden this year.

Man at this point, and I hate to say it,
I say hes done. Why would he even consider another microfracture surgery? It hasnt worked before why does anyone believe its gonna work now? At some point, we have to accept reality, we are wasting money and roster spots for someone who is most likely never going to play at a high level if ever again. Besides, a fresh start, a different training/health/medical staff around him could do him some good. The fans booed him, which was an absolutely atrocious thing to do, which has to be like an icicle through the heart to him. I wouldnt be surprised if when his contract is renewed its by another team willing to take a chance on a former #1 pick. Poor cat, he just can never get healthy enough to even practice let alone getting close to contributing, its all out of his control. What a bummer. I think his Portland days could be coming to an end. Ive been wrong b4 and I could be wrong on this.

Finally coming around.
Lets move past this era of epic disappointment, after so much hope.
"We gotta get this $#!^ together guys!" - Phil
Whats the point?
The Blazers knew going into the season that he probably wouldnt play, so they knew they werent gonna get any production from that roster spot.
Who would we bring in?
If we have someone really strong to bring in, I’d wave him, but I’d hold him if not. If he ever plays again, might as well hold onto some thin connection.
All that glitters isn't chrome
Patty Mills! Though waiving Oden makes little sense then unless we want to sign a big man.
So I’ll say waive Armon and sign Mills. Can’t we waive Oden and still let him use the team’s facilities? Is there a rule that says we can’t let him have access to doctors, physiotherapists etc. after we waive him? Waiving him would open up a roster spot for trades which might help further down the line.

The difference between waiving Greg Oden, and not,
is his Bird rights.
He’s a UFA this summer, so he can go where he pleases (or to where he can get a contract).
If the Blazers decide his Bird rights are worth keeping—the guy I’d cut would be Chris Johnson, not Armon—sparing Armon the axe until Patty Mills gets back. Neither is a legit NBA player, so it doesn’t really matter much, but this is based entirely on positional balance.

The other interesting question:
If the Blazers did waive Oden—would another team claim him off waivers?

There is nothing wrong with having a 3rd string big being a foul machine....Geez
…and CJ is capable of more than that but he almost never gets the chance to prove it.

I'm done...
I’ve been a huge honk oncer, but I’m done. My wife was right all along when she first saw him, she knew that his body wasn’t right… Shame…
BTW, now that Vanilla Gorilla is on board, I think I’d waive Greg and keep both Armon and CJ… Armon’s not too many Felton meltdowns away from backing up Nolan Smith… CJ is the only big man we have who isn’t ancient… The odds of Camby, Thomas and Pryz all playing every game the rest of the year are pretty slim, IMO…

It's strange...
I don’t know if Oden on paper isn’t the best choice to waive.
But I think it would be a hard psychological hurdle for this franchise to jump, to be the first team in N.B.A. history to waive a #1, #1 pick.
