Gameday Open Thread: Hawks vs. Blazers
The scrappy Blazers led by LaMarcus Aldridge reappeared in the first half tonight, pushing around the Atlanta Hawks to the tune of a 15 point halftime lead. Every starter is playing well tonight. Yep, even him. So hang out here and discuss the second half. -- Tim

Wait?
All the “Haters” want is for an NBA player to shoot 60+% and have 5 assists/half? I could be wrong, but thats a pretty high bar…
+nolan smith becoming playable
equals even less crawford at PG

fortunately, i don't think the felton over the first 30 games was 'sustainable'
law of averages in regards to his shooting %s…. had to start going up
The Law of Averages is a myth
but we can hope for regression to the mean
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
I thought the law of averages simply was
A layman’s interpretation of regression to the mean.

It's a little more nuanced than that
but you’re basically correct. I just get off on being a tool sometimes.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Call it what you will
I still don’t see how a 27 year old kid would suddenly lose his ability to shoot the ball…
weird stuff happens all the time in sports
Like, Arenas was an all-star 3 point shooting contestant, but no team wants to pick him up for vet’s minimum.
Joel Freeland=Stud
let me rephrase
I have a hard time believing that an nba player, in his prime, would be averaging his career averages in every category except shooting percentages…. I would expect the other categories… ass/min, steals/min, to/min, boards/min to go down as well if he had lost something….
Jeremy Lin = supersrar
Fleton in NY almost Jeremy Lin like numbers, so….
Felton = almost superstar?

nic turning into a scorer
thats what we need from him instead of just kickout threes and fast break points
Sadly, I saw him retreating to that corner again on the break.
Being a Blazer fan is not exactly healthy.
and then he came back and drove it hard on the following possession
the transformation is gradual
PHILLY!
yeah as long as he remembers to mix it up
similar to Aldridge using 4 or 5 different approaches to get in scoring position
Nic is starting to Beast
This could save the blazers season ala lamarcus last year…

his only problem is his shot
that is my only concern. he is a good PG in other aspects. A few weird TOs wont be a big problem im sure for a longer period
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
His shooting has been about confidence.
His turnovers are of the crazy boneheaded variety. I assumed that was related to his confidence too. Or lack thereof.
nah...lack of being able to think clearly..esp. thoughts like seeing a few plays ahead....
.with all of his energy going into breathing is my guess..
Feltdown :)
that’s the best Felton play on words so far.

Again, who would nate replace felton with?
The shoot first sg/sf, whose shooting 38%? Quick(etc al) is an idiot for even suggesting it…
I think he suggested it because Crawford was actually shooting 43% this month and 5 apg in 26 mpg

But the move screams of the Blazers thinking this season is basically over. Blazers need Felton

of course they do it wasnt that he wouldnt play at all which is why I knew no move would be made
They wonty bench him no matter what they will trade him before he gets benched same for Wallace . Felton and Wallace are some of the biggest pouters in the league no way they will come off the bench here .its why Nics at sg .

crawford's past 2 years
1) sixth man of the year
2) 3rd place in sixth man of the year
he’d have to completely rework his thinking… in crawford’s mind, he’s a sixth man…
Really?
I disagree. Playing against the other teams bench and fatigued starters.
I know where I come from, and when you always have in mind where you come from the rest will be easy. I think the rest will be easy.
-- M. Rivera
yah
but when a sixth man enters, he’s never going against the best; he knows he has the advantage, and that works to his benefit.
he’s going to be faster than whoever is guarding him when he enters….
again what sixth men are not playing against the best ?Are you saying harden is not playing against the best ? what about terry ? or manu ?
The best sixth men play in the 4th quarter thats why they are considered the best sixth men
by Willie Beamon on Feb 18, 2012 8:52 PM PST up reply actions
no, when they enter the game
they are always beginning their stint against slightly tired starters or bench players
a sixth man usually has starter talents, and is completely fresh…
imo
thats why you see scorers as sixth men
They go in knowing they have the advantage, and then attack against slightly worse talent; improving their confidence for the night….
A good sixth man can start with no problem
He may not be as good as the starters (depends on the situation), but a sixth man can fit right into the starters. IMO the concept of a sixth man mindset isn’t that important.
i respectfully disagree with regards to the mindset
do i agree that most sixth men wouldn’t have trouble starting, and playing well; of course not…
i just believe the sixth man, has a dominant mindset that he wouldn’t have if he starts
yeah, if he is mainly a scorer, like Crawford
But some 6th men can start pretty easy if they have a more all around game
Joel Freeland=Stud
he would?
I must be out of the loop, I didn’t think there was a suitable replacement for Felton on the team
Joel Freeland=Stud
there isn't
which is why this whole ‘controversy’ is ridiculous.
Yeah, if the Blazers want to make any waves in the playoffs
They need Felton, the smart move is just to ride him and hope for the best… But that doesn’t mean Blazer’s fans should criticize Ray
Joel Freeland=Stud
Shouldn't* criticize Ray
well, whatever, hope Felton starts to turn things around
Joel Freeland=Stud
exactly
the blazers need felton if they want to do anything in the playoffs…
I’m all for blazers fans criticizing ray for his crappy play; he’s been stinking it up. it just doesn’t make sense to replace a pure pg who is shooting 36% for a sg/sf who is shooting 38%
^^^ Amazeballz
permaswoon…..your post cracked me up so much, i created an SB account and hunted down this chat (which will never be read again) and had to give you props. Yes, I have no life and am reading the game chat…..hours after the game is over. still, that was hilarious. well played, sir.

Nic's a real pro. Played in the Europe during the lockout and kept himself in shape.
Worked on his game even. Hopefully for Felton’s sake, he learned his lesson this season.
I don't like them giving up open 3's. At least make them work for the points so they tire out.
That went in even though Johnson hesitated in the middle of his shot.
I'm pretty sure down fifteen doesn't count as being around.

and then add on batum's ability to cook a mean duck
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
I don't know about that....
maybe a decent tayshawn prince.

I'd say he's already better than Prince. Tay was an important piece for Detroit, but Nic's stats are already better.
Dre ain't got no love for these pros
What, so has Nolan been having private meetings with Nate too?
I’m amazed Nate’s trusting him with these minutes.
Nolan Smith is a good player
He was solid at Duke against the best collegiate competition.

I think Nolan will finish out the game...how nice for him

There hasn't been a play stoppage.

What are those things called again?
Time somethings
Space-time?

That's it.
We should have called a space-time and got Babbitt in there.
There must be a space-time continuum pun to make
But I just can’t think of it.

I highyl doubt the 2 extra minutes of playing time are going to make any difference.

to get him into the all-star game?
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
yeah, but that has to do with multiple people, not just him.
"Wide, girthy. Just like a Rhino. Sometimes my horns are visible."
decent?
thats a good night for any pg in this league…
The Talkin Ball lady will be happy to hear
that Felton went 14 of 8.
I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS
She recently said LaMarcus went 19 of 11
I am usually the one that has the rose-colored glasses when it comes to our young guys
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Gerald Wallace was going to check in.
Then Batum sank that 3 and Coach took him back from the scorer’s table.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice they're not.

Pretty sure Batum won't come off the bench again for a while

at a minimum
batum is our 2 going forward
Let's not go to far
I’m still not sure he can consistently create his own shot
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Did Batum just do a Brandon Roy? That move where you pretend you're looking to pass then just shoot it in the guys face as he
relaxes.
I can see Nic picking up a couple tricks from B-Roy. He's really smart.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice they're not.

People forget with the Batum/Pippen comparisons
that Batum’s already a better 3point shooter than Pip ever was. Although Scottie did seem to have a knack for hitting them when it mattered.
"Bend your legs!" -Nate McMillan
rudy gay on offense
stats are nearly identical. a bit better than gay on d. that’s my expectation/hope
PHILLY!
Also Pippen is perhaps the best perimeter defender in history
And was a considerably better passer, handler, and rebounder.
