Mike Rice Called us Felton Bashers "haters"
Mike rice must be losing it. Raymond Felton scores on a final second first half layup and mike rice says "take that haters" Is he insane? Raymond Felton has been an absolute abomination at point guard this season. Every criticism he has received is completely justified. Even on the play that Mike Rice said that, Felton missed 2 wide open players so he could selfishly get his. I was never a fan of Steve Blake, but I would gladly take him back for Felton. Felton had 9 points and 5 assists in the first half and they act like he is a world beater. Are you kidding me? average for a good point guard.

I took it as
Mike Rice was speaking on behalf of Felton, like the basket was making a statement to those who were doubting him, not that Rice was choosing to side w/ Felton.

Lets face it ALL the Blazers guards suck
Something we just have to live with.
To be fair, he was probably trying to call us something else
but just couldn’t come up with the right moniker.

He was doing
the patented Mike Rice absurd humor with grain of truth thing.
That said, I do prefer it when my experts talk and analyze like grown-ups. I cringe over that word because it describes nothing and leaves nowhere for conversation to go.

What if Rice replaced hater with:
“insipid dolt whose basketball opinions are worth less than a canary’s flatulence”?

Whom does that accurately describe?
His reference is to those who have critiqued Felton’s poor play, which Rice himself has done. Earlier in the season he was saying things like, “Oooh. You’d like your point guard to look around for the pass on that play.” When you consider the amount of open criticism that comes from Blazers broadcasting regarding current players, that kind of statement might as well be a 64-piece brass band trumpeting that this guy is not playing well. I don’t think you’ll find anyone in the Portland area who has not had a criticism of Felton’s game this season.
Now, from Raymond’s point of view this might well have been motivated by proving the critics wrong. I get that. If that’s what he needs to think in order to get motivated, I’m all for it. But in fact as long as Felton plays like this, he will find few people criticizing him…precisely because it’s markedly different than the play he’s evidenced for the bulk of the season.
In any case, I would have preferred Rice to say something along the lines of, “You think Felton hasn’t noticed the criticism, folks? You better believe he has. He believes he’s better than that and he’s showing it right now!” I can live with that because it’s true and because it tells more positively about the changes that Felton is making rather than being negative about people who critique him.

Nobody
Whom does that accurately describe?
I just wanted an excuse to say “canary flatulence.”
Seriously, though. I whole-heartedly agree with every point you made, and I couldn’t have stated your points any better. And I “hate” when people use the word “hater” (unless it’s in jest). It’s a word that’s gotten a lot of attention lately, and rightly so, as it has become trendy on the interwebs. And even the more articulate, ad hominem non-arguments are equally cringe-inducing.

Come to think of it...
that IS remarkably similar to some NBA pundits! You may have something there. I’m going to start my own personal “canary flatulence” list.

May have something?
No, we definitely have something here….
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
I will disagree with this statement
But in fact as long as Felton plays like this, he will find few people criticizing him….
My observation is that the criticism (in the scenario you lay out) will only abate slowly, if ever. Once a “fact” has been established (that Ray sucks) it sticks forever ….until another “fact” is at last finally established (probably with another team). People don’t want to give up their opinions.

What if the Trail Blazers organization did the honorable thing by putting Mike Rice out to pasture?
I’m flabbergasted Rice still has a job, while a competent analyst, Steve “Snapper” Jones, is out of work.
I used to think that, but I realized a couple years ago that Rice is the Blazers' comic relief.
When things suck for the Blazers we can sit back and laugh at Rice. He’s now part of the Blazer Experience. Seriously, there’s nobody in the business worth listening to that comments on NBA games except guys that can make you laugh once in a while. Who needs anything else?

Are you aware that Steve Jones has been a Blazer broadcaster previously?
I think he was excellent, and wouldn’t mind watching Rice and Steve battle again… but something tells me that ‘out of work’ is just another way to say ‘retired’.
I am pretty sure that Rice and Snapper never battled
When Snapper did color for the Blazers TV, Rice did color for the radio side. They never worked together on any regular basis
FYI AK is aware that Snapper worked for the Blazers before

I'm not sure what you point was with that post...
Rice and Jones worked together regularly, on the Courtside show. They did in fact ‘battle’, if you understand that I’m not referring to warfare or combat… and it was a good show. Thanks!
Courtside?
I thought you were referring to being on the same broadcast team…you know… since never mentioned the part about Courtside.
BTW…yeah I did get the part about it not being actual combat

Sign me up!!! I hate Felton
He could make me change my mind if he plays like he did tonight
Rice's statement was meant to represent what Felton was saying to his "haters" after he scored.
It was not meant as Rice saying that to the “haters”.
Rice has had plenty of bad things to say about Felton, and has been on the trade for Nash bandwagon for weeks.

I thought it was hilarious
and I haven’t exactly been a part of Ray’s fan club. If Raymond Felton makes me look bad for thinking that we needed to trade him then I’m all for it.
Well...
If Mike Rice accuses me of being a hater, I’ll just say my comments were taken out of context.

I love the implication
We’ve all been terribly unfair to Ray this year. How dare we call attention to the by far the worst starting point guard in the NBA this year … the reason some of have mentioned it is because he’s shown he’s better than this.
in reality
the criticism of felton started way before his poor play. the cupcake references were out before the season started. That said, it will take a lot more games like this before they subside. I’m rooting for him.
I'm more disgusted that Mike Rice didn't correctly pronounce Zaza Pachulia's surname to start the game.
Luckily for me, I got to listen to competent announcing on Saturday afternoon with Kevin Calabro and Marques Johnson calling the UW v. Arizona game.
The difference between Calabro and Johnson compared to Barrett and Rice is a canyon-sized gap. Honestly, I’m astonished Barrett isn’t a TV sports reporter on the local news in a tiny market (e.g., Bend, OR); plus, Rice should be living in Arizona or Florida, where he could shuffle around while residing at a retirement community.
Methinks you take this stuff too seriously.

Nah, it just gives me something to rant about.
On a scale of 1 to 10 on my indifference to interest spectrum, they’re about a 3. Call it detached disdain, even if that sounds oxymoronic.
I thought it was hilarious and am a fan of Mike and Mike. He has been trying to get Blazer fans to tell Steve Nash we want him on twitter so I hardly think he is on the Felton bandwagon. People need to quit being so sensetive and enjoy a broadcast team that actually sounds like they have fun calling the game.
If you are a huge Calabro fan you’re in luck, you can jump back on the Sonic bandwagon you jumped off of, sounds like a real possibility of getting the Sonics back.

For someone who is so non-personal when it comes to criticisms of players, AK,
you sure do have some highly personalized criticisms of your announcers.
Rice cracks me up. And he has decent insights about the game. I really don’t give a darn how he pronounces names.
Our play-by-play guys, Barrett and Wheels, otoh, drive me positively nuts. It’s one thing when when the Blazers make bad fourth-quarter plays. It’s quite another when you get subjected to Barrett’s obnoxious emo-commiseration on top of that. Wheels’s screaming sets me on edge too.

To be fair, I’m being somewhat hyperbolic in my criticisms of the Mikes. Y’know, if they entertain enough people to justify their employment, so be it. They’re not my preference, but I’m only a small, insignificant minority in that regard.
I didn´t heard my name, so he probably was not talking about me.
You on the other hand… ;)
“And the Blazers lead has been cut to 23” (any game, Barret with a trembling voice, in the fourth quarter, with 2 mins left, and Nate still playing his starters, even those coming out of injuries and with 40 mins in their legs).
I love Mike Rice.

I hate the fact that he can't pronounce players names
I kinda feel that is a minimum requirement of being a broadcaster…but at least he acknowledged it and turned it into a schtick.

It definitely was ironic that while he defended Felton with this comment..
during the same game, Rice also called him Felton Spencer twice. Ray does remind you of a poorly skilled 7 footer from time to time, so can’t blame Rice much here.
The cake was a lie.
I have been watching/istening to him for 20 years
and he wasn’t any better at it in his mid-50s

comedy gold
and there are plenty of games where I really need the laugh
Possibly he meant himself
I wouldn’t put self-deprecating humor past him. Although he could have explicitly meant not himself but you. Or you. OR YOU!.
As bad as Felton has played
Steve Blake is still worse:
Felton PER 10.41 51st in the league for pgs
Blake PER 8.99 54th in the league for pgs
and Derick Fisher is lower than them
Why do you think the Lakers are desperately looking at Gilbert Arenas?
And by make up, you mean force up bad shots while Bynum only gets few touches.
I love it when kobester goes into “I’m going to get mine” mode, which is all season long this year.
The cake was a lie.
He didn't call "us" haters
he called the haters haters.
Back to Felton
Rice is a kick…but Felton…So the only way the Blazers beat the Lakes is to run them off the floor. Felton opens with a 3 – which happens to go in – but the next 3 Blazer plays feature jumpers, after walking up the court…7 points in the quarter. Felton is very athletic and can make plays, but he shoots all out of rhythm, and upsets the rhythm of the game…He takes his team OUT of the game. He dribbles into crowds…he dribbles a lot, he throws rifle passes to a man 2 feet from him, he has a lot of talent but does not exercise good basketball sense or decision-making. He can’t run a team…He will have flashes of beauty because of his athletic skills, but it’s pretty clear why he keeps getting traded. It’s not a question of ‘hate Felton’; Felton plays basketball, I watch him, and he drives me crazy!
